News: Andy Pettitte is a Free Agent
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 5, 2007 8:55 pm

According to the Associated Press, LHP Andy Pettitte has declined his $16 million option with the Yankees, meaning he is now a free agent.

Pettitte had until Wednesday to decide on his option.

basically, instead of locking in on having to pitch another season for the Yankees, he opted out so he could have more time to figure out what’s next, which, according to pettitte last week on houston tv, is either pitch again for the Yankees or retire

the thing is, i still believe he could back off, tell the Yankees he will not be playing,  fade in to the back ground and then suddenly decide he should pitch for his old buddy, Joe Torre, and the Dodgers…

This past season, Pettitte was 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA.

I wonder what kind of relationships guys like Pettite, Posada, and Rivera have had with Willie.

Especially Posada. He’d be a really good fit on the Mets IMO.

Posada is very good but three years is just way too much for a 36 year old catcher in the NL.

I’d rather give LoDuca and Castro one year deals this year, and just work from there, while focusing on the bigger guys that are out on the FA and trade markets.

I know he is 36 and all…but would you be ok with the Mets overpaying the guy for 2 years with a player option for a 3rd? I know he is old…but he can hit and they aren’t thinking much further in the future than 2009.

This is shaping up to be one crazy hotstove…

Pettite’s stats don’t really show how well he pitched last year – he could have won 20 with any luck (had a bunch of quality start no-decisions early). He would certainly plug a gaping hole without mortgaging the farm if Omar, Willie and Duque could persuade him somehow…doubtful, I know, but…

there is no way that andy is coming across town to play for the mets.i would love to see it…but i wouldnt wait around for him to decide- go out and snag jennings and arod!!!!!!!

pettitte would be such a great fit on this team, GREAT FIT!

NO THANKS……The only pitchers I want the mets to acquire during the next two seasons I want to be under 32 years old….PERIOD……..Learn from your mistakes: Mo Vaugn, Glavine, Delgado, El Duke, Alomar…….Old players either end up hurt or completely wasteful and black holes…..Even worse are players who are just looking to pitch more when their love for team is long been gone since their true team no longer has them (glavine perfect example)

    • JefJarrett says:

Ok….so Omar needs to fix the rotation…but he needs to do so by finding pitchers that are younger than 32 years old…..they need to be aces, otherwise why should he even be talking to them, and he can’t go out and acquire anyone via trade that will cost us our super valuable, ready to break out, future cy young, and babe ruth prospects…….

So, the solution will be to free Ruben Gotay, Lastings Milledge, and Carlos Gomez to fill the holes in our everyday lineup…..free Pelfry, and Humber, and any other rookie in our farm system to fix our pitching staff….and then we’re on our way to the promised land……I’m so glad we have this wealth of knowledge right here on this board as to how to fix this team………

And yes edwindrewes….I realize you didn’t say all that….but it’s just a combination of what everyone has been saying on this board…and its nuts. Not every acquisition will be made for 3-5 years down the road…….Pettite…although older….is as good as any pitcher on the market right now for a one year stopgap….if noone else is available.

I mean, if Omar shouldn’t get Santanna because we can have him “for just cash next year” (just like Zambrano I suppose) BUT he is still supposed to fix the rotation…..getting upset over an Andy Pettite for one year stopgap is just plain silly.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Pettitte cross the river and wind up in Queens, but I’d rather see Omar and Jeff put that money together and get Carlos Silva.
