Yes, he's almost as old as Glavine, and yes he got injured right after his overpowering one-hitter in June, but after he came back he proved he can still pitch. With off-season rehab he may well be the hard-thrower he was before the relatively minor injury. He would be a upgrade in every way over Glavine (ERA was over half a run lower in a much tougher league), including in the guts department. He would also be a great mentor for Maine, and as much as a clubhouse leader as a pitcher can be. The only downside I see is that the rumor here in Boston is that he and Pedro did not get along -- maybe Pedro resented the new guy coming into town and getting all the attention. If Pedro gives his OK I'm all for this deal. It's a short term solution in a situation where there probably is no long term solution this year.
