Buzz: Nats Target Gomez, Pelfrey
By D.J. Short - Nov 8, 2007 1:06 am

Bill Ladson of MLB.com quotes a baseball source that says the Nationals have targeted Mets OF Carlos Gomez and RHP Mike Pelfrey this off-season.

The source, as quoted by Ladson…

“We want to get younger (with a player like Gomez).”

Ladson speculates that the Mets may have interest in RHP Chad Cordero to fill a need in the bullpen.

…presumably, omar is gauging the market in an effort to best utilize the chips that he currently has…nothing wrong with that…as with the trading deadline earlier this summer, Cordero and Jon Rauch are players worth keeping an eye on in the coming months…the question is, this off-season, are prospects better spent on relief pitching or starting pitching, especially in a free agent market with so few quality starters truly available…

Because there are quality relievers available?

C’mon now, outside of the closers (Gagne, Francisco Cordero, Mo Rivera) — none of which the Mets will sign — what decent reliever is available? Beyond Scott Linebrink?

The bullpen is much more of a travesty right now than the starting pitching, and the Mets can go after Carlos Silva, Livan Hernandez, Bartolo Colon, Jon Lieber, and a few others to fill out the rotation. In order to get a quality setup man, they’ll likely have to make a trade.

i would have done pelfrey and gomez for lidge. HE HAS FILTHY STUFF.

a bullpen of heilman, lidge and wagner would have be killer. you fail omar.

      go get us A-ROD.

  2. BaLLooNNoT says:

I really dont wanna trade Gomez, but I’d have to think about trading Pelfrey for Cordero. He’d be huge for us in the pen. That and Like the poster before me mentioned, there are a few starters we could use in the rotation, so the bull pen might be the most desirable need to fill via trade.

    • Reyes es el Rey says:

Pelfrey could be just as good in the pen. And trading “starters” for relievers doesn’t seem to be Omar’s strong suit.

      • hot stove chef says:

That Duaner Sanchez deal was a fleecing (right up until the point when Duaner got the munchies)

  3. Don Logan says:

This could be a fall back option for Omar in case Pelfrey and/or Gomez cannot be used to reel in any bigger fish on the market. One of them is worth Cordero but not both. And actually, down the stretch last year I was more impressed with Rauch.

    • pezao says:

Living in DC I got to see them both a fair bit. Rauch would be the better fit for the pen. What we need in the pen is a work horse who can put in an inning or two on a semi-regular basis, and that’s what he provides. His ERA ain’t fabulous, but it’s good, and he’s a big guy with lots of endurance. He was at or near the top in the NL at G and IP out of the pen. Cordero is good, but we already have 3 like him: Heilman, Duaner, and Billy.

  4. The Glider says:

Why trade for Chad Cordera (and use up a chip) when we can simply spend money and get Gagne, Limebrink, of F.Cordero?

The Phillies just up-ed the ante. We need to see their bet . . . and then raise them. C’mon Omar, do something great!

    • Danny1986 says:

i honestly think the Phillies gave up far too much for a questionable reliever. Lidge could have been had for much less last summer….and no one jumped at the opportunity. Why is he now suddedly worth a relilable reliever (Geary) and a young phenom (Bourne)?

They may have raised the ante. But are you seriously sold on their hand?

  5. ravin108 says:

I love the 1 am post. Thats more my schedule.

Glad the Nats like our prospects. either Rauch or Cordero would be nice

  6. squad says:

If the Nats really like our prospects I wouldn’t mind including Schneider in any deal. He is very strong defensively and a LH hitting catcher, a rarity. Then if we resigned Castro there could be a nice time share between the two.

    • jscand says:

Excellent point squad, although I don’t have the interest in Cordero or Rauch, I would certainly take Schneider in a lesser deal to platoon with Castro.

    • Danny1986 says:

Thank You!!! It’s these types of ‘under teh radar’ deals that make a difference. And it’s comments like yours that increase the collective IQ on this blog. An IQ that is suffering due to all these mindless “Sign AROD” posts.

  7. therealsince86 says:

Pelfrey and Gomez for Church, Rauch and Florez. That sounds great to me. Rauch is a complete workhorse. Church would be great to add to the OF. It would allow a trade of Milledge or Alou Church to be the 4th OF. HE IS LH which is something we need desperately. Flores is the retribution part of the trade and prob. would make it uneven for us. Resign Castro or Loduca and let them spilt time with Florez with Florez ready to take over in a year or two.

Reyes Castillo Wright Beltran Alou Delgado Church Flores/Castro/Loduca.
    Pedro Maine Perez Silva Livan
Wagner, Heilman, Rauch, Feleciano, Sanchez, Elduque, Show.

It would also allow a trade of Heilman next spring if Sanchez is healthy or even allowing Heilman to take the 5th spot in the rotation.

    • christian warrior says:

Are you suggesting that the Mets try and trade Alou? I didn’t understand that part of your post, or if that is even what you were trying to say.

But first off, he’s too important to the Mets to trade, especially if we don’t add a significant bat. Secondly, how much trade value do you think Alou would have? I don’t think that another team would rush to give up too much for him.

      • therealsince86 says:

No meant to say trade of Alou or use in a rotation with Milledge and Alou. Should have previewed the post. No way do I not want Alou on the team.

        • therealsince86 says:

Now I have myself confused. I need about 3 more cups of coffee. TRADE OF MILLEDE or rotation of the 3.

  8. stevehendu says:

“F” them!!! They punk’d us late in the season (and we folded) yet they got spanked by the phillies. Dealing with them is no longer like dealing with the ugly step-child. Its just as bad as dealing with the phils or the braves. And giving them a prospect for 2 overused relievers who are bound the breakdown so we can watch Gomez beat us up? That is a nightmare scenario. Its like watching Jay Bay, Jacobs, Heath Bell, etc hurt us.

Love Manny Acta. I see him as our manager in a few years (or less). You don’t trade a setup man for a chip that can be involved in a bigger trade with other chips.

    • therealsince86 says:

Oh yeah Jacobs is a real terror right now, same with Jason Bay. Besides Gomez might develop into a decent hitter with great speed but by no means at this point do I see him as a super star.

  9. Darling86 says:

The Mets should not trade their top prospects within the division unless they are receiving Miguel Cabrera or Dontrelle Willis in return. Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch are solid, but Carlos Gomez for one of them-not a chance.

  10. boredatwork says:

this doesnt seem so bad of a trade. i really like cordero hes got great stuff but on the other hand carlos gomez is up and coming….if we get jon rauch and cordero i guess it seems kinda far we need bullpen help

    • therealsince86 says:

We would not get both. I think Rauch would be cheaper but actually may be more reliable. Again I would think a trade of Gomez and Pelfrey/Humber for Rauch, Church and Florez would solve many of our needs.

  11. hot stove chef says:

I think you guys are really over-estimating the value of Gomez. He’s a young guy with some upside, but we have solid young OFs already in Milledge and F-Mart, what we don’t have is a closer in the waiting and a guy who can help us right now. Cordero is both of those things, and he plays with passion.

Put him on a contender like the Mets and in a bullpen with Heilman, Sanchez and Wagner and you’re dealing with arguably the best pen in the league for 2-3 years that gives the starting pitchers that much more confidence.

    • therealsince86 says:

I agree we have to trade from our strength to get better. Gomez may be great one day but Beltran is young and locked up, Milledge and Martinez project higher. Thus a trade of Gomez makes sense. Gomez is not going to bring back a quality SP so using him to bring in other pieces of the puzzle makes sense.

    • gameball says:

IMO either Cordero or Rauch would be a much needed addition and I would do Gomez straight up for either one (Cordero is 4 yrs younger, but Rauch is just as reliable and would more likely accept a set-up role).

I would rather keep Pelfrey since he may turn out to be just as effective out of the pen as either of the above, and he’s still young enough to develop into a proper starter.

  12. boredatwork says:

this doesnt seem so bad of a trade. i really like cordero hes got great stuff but on the other hand carlos gomez is up and coming….if we get jon rauch and cordero i guess it seems kinda *fare* we need bullpen help

  13. Achilles400 says:

he Nats don’t have one player on their roster worth Gomez straight up. Omar better find a better way to fix the bullpen than giving up the only marginal prospects in the Mets system. by the way, who cares what the Nats want, they are irrelevant. Get a friggin starter that can go 7.
