News: Carpenter Back As Nats Announcer

November 8, 2007 at 23:27 pm · 18 comments

by D.J. Short

Bob Carpenter was given a one-year deal with an option to return as the Nationals’ announcer for MASN.

The decision comes months after Carpenter was told by Nationals president Stan Kasten that his contract would not be renewed.

After trying to lure ESPN’s Dan Schulman, the Nationals revisited talks with Carpenter. He will rejoin analyst Don Sutton and field reporter Debbi Taylor.

…for the best commentary on carpenter’s return to the booth, look no further than Chris Needham’s Capitol Punishment…hilarious as always, chris…out-of-market mets fans, here’s to another season of irrational play-by-play…

Speaking of Carpenter, what’s the deal with Chris Carpenter on St. Louis? Is he still under contract? Has he recovered from his injury/injuries?

WHAT!!!????

WHY!!!????

The Nationals broadcast, and especially because of this Carpenter dude, is hands down, without a doubt THE WORST in Major League Baseball…

Coming in at a close second is the Phillies and that overrated monotonic old man Harry Kalas……

But the Nationals broadcast is atrocious….dead silence 25% of the time, with no stadium noise whatsoever included…

This guy is horrible and it makes me sad that people like him and Ted Robinson who know NOTHING ABOUT BASEBALL get to be on TV and paid to talk about and watch the games…

PATHETIC!

Get ready for another season of unmitigated praise for the baseball talents of Nook Logan and D’Angelo Jimenez!

I love the posts about player rumors all over baseball, but this is sort of pushing it. Who the hell cares about the Nats announcers? Lets worry about handling them in September next season.

Although have to say, why lump Ted Robinson in that post? He was excellent – he completely knows the game. Some buddies and I chatted him up on the 7 coming home from a game one night (if I recall correctly, the Cone comback vs. the Expos). real insightful guy…and would still be around if not for his busy schedule.

Maybe there is another Ted Robinson you are speaking of…

Because the one I remember watching didn’t know the difference between a slider and a changeup and a splitter and a 2-seam fastball and a 4-seam fastball…

He knew nothing about pitching…

Why do I lump him in this post?? Because they are both bad baseball announcers….

Maybe Robinson just played dumb and asked his analysts questions that he already knew the answer to…but he insulted Mets fans intelligence if that was the case…and it only made him look stupid…

OK if you say so – can’t say I recall his specific input on pitch selection, just remember him being a pro. Then again he was typically seated next to Fran Healy, so a circus clown would seem insightful in that chair.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Ugh. Seriously, this guy is insufferable. I can’t stand him 19 times a year, plus the few times I try to watch the Nats against other teams. Hands downs, he is the worst play-by-play guy in the game.

zen November 9, 2007 at 9:23 am

carpenter was also one of the mets tv broadcasters during the 1992-3 season. i guess the worst team money can buy was not limited to the guys on the field that year.

SamInNorthCakalakey November 9, 2007 at 9:33 am

One of the bright spots last season was reading that he would not return this year. Now, I feel betrayed. No wonder that team sucks.
The Michael Kay of the National league. But at least Kay’s team wins!!! Yeah, he makes players sound 10 times better than they really are but you can’t argue with 14 straight years of playoff baseball. What the heck does Carpenter have to be excited about?!?! He never questions anything the team or manager does.
Down 10 runs in the 8th, God forbid a Nat hits a double. We’ll never here the end of “anything is possible folks” or “don’t go anywhere fans, it’s not over yet”. A joke!!!

I always feel like I’m watching a golf game when I watch their broadcast.

As all other Mets fans in the DC area have so aptly said:

NOOOOOOOO!

The only positive is that it reinforces how truly pathetic this franchise is at this time, not being able to replace one of the worst announcers in baseball. If this is the way they run their franchise, we have little to fear from them either now, or in the distant future…

BaltimoreMets November 9, 2007 at 8:31 am

This might not be a Mets related issue, but it does affect any of us Mets fans in the Baltimore/DC region at least 19 times a season.

This guy is a DISASTER in the booth.

If you watch broadcasts from all over the country….you will realize that Sterling is not that bad at all….

Some people out there are just really, really bad….

As Mets fans..we are COMPLETELY spoiled to have such an objective, funny, knowledgeable crew as Gary, Keith, and Ron….

People in other parts of the country….like Philly…have NO IDEA what a good broadcast is….

dave27 November 9, 2007 at 11:33 am

Sterling isn’t that bad? Which part isn’t that bad…misreporting the action? Putting himself above the ball game? The homerish rants when things aren’t going well?

He is AWFUL.

moze1021 November 9, 2007 at 11:38 am

Compared to Carpenter, Ted Robinson, HARRY KALAS, whoever the D-Backs play by play guy is (not Mark Grace, Grace is good)…..Sterling isnt that bad…

Live in Philly for a couple of months and try to suffer through listening to Harry Kalas and Gary Matthews…then come back to me and compare to Sterling…
