Don Burke of The Star-Ledger reports Mets GM Omar Minaya spoke with Scott Boras, who is the agent for free agent 3B Alex Rodriguez.
According to Burke, Minaya was approached by Boras, but did not indicate they discussed Rodriguez specifically. Minaya as quoted by Burke…
“We talked a little bit about all his guys.”
Burke also noted Minaya does not believe anything “major” will happen on either the trade or free agent front until the winter meetings, which are to be held next month.
According to Burke, the Angels and Red Sox were to meet with Boras as well last night.
…as cerrone has noted, minaya needed to meet with boras in order to gauge the market for a-rod, so he can give a well-researched recommendation to ownership…

I heard Craig Carton on the FAN this morning reporting that the Mets were going to make an offer to A-Rod. Does anyone know anything about this? I don’t think he said where he got that info from.
There is a big difference between kicking the tires on A-Rod so that you can give a “well-researched recommendation to ownership” and saying that you will make him an offer.

No way Omar makes a “competitive” offer for A-Rod.
Then why waste your time making an offer at all?
This isn’t a normal FA negotiation. Everyone knows what the guy is looking for.

Boras also represents other players, so the fact that Minaya talked to him could mean something concerning Arod, or it could mean very little, and he’s getting a feel for other players.
I realize that. And I saw that he is quoted about talking about all of Boras’ clients.
I was more or less referring specifically to what the guy on the FAN was talking about this morning.
