Note: Rockies Want Answer On Torrealba

by Mike Nichols on November 8th, 2007 at 10:34 am

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies want to know before Tuesday if any of their team’s free agents, including C Yorvit Torrealba, will accept their contract offers.

Earlier this week Renck reported the Rockies had offered Torrealba a two-year deal worth around $2 million per season.

In 113 games for the Rockies this past season, Torrealba hit .255 with eight home runs and 47 RBI, while striking out 73 times in 396 at-bats.

Renck, who again stated the Mets “like” Torrealba, also notes the Rockies have contacted the agent for free agent C Paul Lo Duca.

…the other day, cerrone wrote that he feels the Mets are not nearly as interested as most reports have suggested and will either bring back lo duca, or trade for a guy like Ramon Hernandez

Buzz: Several Teams Interested In Castillo

by Mike Nichols on November 8th, 2007 at 10:23 am

At FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes the market for free-agent 2B Luis Castillo could “intensify.”

According to Rosenthal, in addition to the Mets, the Astros, Indians, Padres and Dodgers may also get show interest.

Earlier this week Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters the team is doing “the best we can to sign Castillo.”

…as cerrone has noted, castillo is likely just trying to gauge his market value, in order to sign the best possible deal with the Mets

Mets pitching prospect Kevin Mulvey is on the Nationals radar, as they are looking for young major-league-ready pitcher, and Mulvey fits that description, according to Rosenthal.

Rosenthal also provides buzz on Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera, who he believes will be traded, as well as on the possible directions A’s GM Billy Beane will go this off season.

Buzz: Twins Target Gomez

by D.J. Short on November 8th, 2007 at 9:56 am

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the Twins are targeting young position players like B.J. Upton and Delmon Young of the Devil Rays as well as Mets OF Carlos Gomez in an effort to bolster their offense.

The Twins will need a center-fielder if Torri Hunter leaves via free-agency.

Christensen writes that the Twins may be willing to part with Kevin Slowey, Matt Garza or Scott Baker in a deal.

In parts of two major league seasons, Garza is 8-13 with a 4.47 ERA. In three minor league seasons, Garza is 22-14 with a 2.88 ERA with an average of over one strikeout per inning.

…they are nice arms, no question, but if the mets send Gomez to the twins, it better be part of a deal to get Johan Santana

Quote: 2007 Hurts Worse Than 2006

by Mike Nichols on November 8th, 2007 at 7:25 am

Frank Litsky of the New York Times notes Mets RHP Pedro Martinez and OF Moises Alou are in their native Dominican Republic helping out with relief efforts due to damage from Tropical Storm Noel last week.

However, during a conference call to discuss the relief efforts, Martinez told reporters that he was still angry about end of the Mets 2007 Season.

At his blog for the Star-Ledger, Don Burke quoted Martinez as saying…

“I can’t tell you how disappointed I was and still am. 2007 hurt worse than 2006. This season I called the trainer’s room and talked to the guys in the clubhouse during the course of the year to give them my best and encourage them and tell them I was coming. We just couldn’t finish the job.”

Burke also quoted Martinez saying he will speak with all the Mets young pitchers to tell them the team has to “make up for last season” because they “owe it to our fans.”

…it’s great to know players like pedro, take what happened at the end of the season to heart as much as many of us do…

Note: Glavine Still An Option

by Mike Nichols on November 8th, 2007 at 7:09 am

Tyler Kepner of the New York Times notes free agent LHP Tom Glavine may still be an option for the Mets.

According to Kepner, Mets GM Omar Minaya plans to meet with Glavine, once the pitcher decides if wants to keep pitching.

Minaya as quoted by Kepner…

“It’s fair to say if he wants to come back, we’re going to sit down with him and see what he’s looking for. This year, he’s going to have the option of Atlanta. We’re going to just let him spend time with his family and decide what he wants to do.”

Earlier this month, during a conference call, Minaya indicated he did not expect to know of the pitcher’s plans until late-November.

…the buzz suggests glavine is most likley to either sign with the Mets, Braves, Nationals or just retire…

…frankly, i’m done with glavine…i think the omar and company should move on…i understand minaya is doing his job by exploring all his options, but my hope is that glavine does not become priority this off season…

News: Omar Meets With Boras

by Mike Nichols on November 8th, 2007 at 6:51 am

Don Burke of The Star-Ledger reports Mets GM Omar Minaya spoke with Scott Boras, who is the agent for free agent 3B Alex Rodriguez.

According to Burke, Minaya was approached by Boras, but did not indicate they discussed Rodriguez specifically. Minaya as quoted by Burke…

“We talked a little bit about all his guys.”

Burke also noted Minaya does not believe anything “major” will happen on either the trade or free agent front until the winter meetings, which are to be held next month.

According to Burke, the Angels and Red Sox were to meet with Boras as well last night.

…as cerrone has noted, minaya needed to meet with boras in order to gauge the market for a-rod, so he can give a well-researched recommendation to ownership…

Buzz: Nats Target Gomez, Pelfrey

by D.J. Short on November 8th, 2007 at 1:06 am

Bill Ladson of MLB.com quotes a baseball source that says the Nationals have targeted Mets OF Carlos Gomez and RHP Mike Pelfrey this off-season.

The source, as quoted by Ladson…

“We want to get younger (with a player like Gomez).”

Ladson speculates that the Mets may have interest in RHP Chad Cordero to fill a need in the bullpen.

…presumably, omar is gauging the market in an effort to best utilize the chips that he currently has…nothing wrong with that…as with the trading deadline earlier this summer, Cordero and Jon Rauch are players worth keeping an eye on in the coming months…the question is, this off-season, are prospects better spent on relief pitching or starting pitching, especially in a free agent market with so few quality starters truly available…
