I'd worry about a few things getting rid of Heilman--

1) Joe Smith isn't anywhere near as good pitching to lefties as Heilman-- if he comes back and can get righties out like he did in the first half of 2007, then he'd be a replacement for Bradford at best.

2) Will Sanchez be healthy? the first injury was a freak occurrance, but everything from the slow recovery to injuring himself further suggests that either he rushed coming back, or that he didn't take the therapy seriously enough, and was still overcompensating for the original injury.

Now, if Padilla shows he can pitch next spring, and Sanchez is healthy, I'd definitely look at moving Heilman aroudn the deadline. But right now, he's a sure thing, and we can't make the same mistake we made with Bradford.

The reality is that Maine has improved every year since coming to Flushing. This year, his first half had him in the Cy Young conversation before he regressed. However, that was his first full season in any starting rotation. He's already established himself as a big game pitcher (see 2006 playoffs and his near no-no against the Marlins at the end of the year). I'd expect him to establish himself in 2008, if not as a Cy Young candidate, then at least a #2/1a-type starter this year as his durability improves.

If you view your pitcher negatively, as will other teams.

If you say that his 3.91 ERA is replaceable, than the other teams won't bother giving Jackson and Quentin.

Plus, Quentin, Jackson and Gomez all have very little value, and Guerra is a long way away. The Twins would reject it in a second.

Also keep in mind that that was John Maine's first full MLB season. He hasn't hit his prime yet either.

he's probably worse than igawa and definitely worse than silva. back of the rotation guy at the best. then again, it is really tough to measure the NPB players, especially pitchers... and, by the way mr. lennon, he is not playing in asia series. the nihon series champions, the chuunichi dragons this year, play in that series along with those of the taiwan league and the korean leagues, as well as the chinese national team. he plays for the hiroshima carp--they suck.

I like Blanton better.

The Mets have 3 outfield prospects on the rise in Milledge, Gomez and Martinez, with Beltran here for 4 more years.

Sign Kosuke to a 4 year deal, trade Milledge and Heilman, who is on his last year of his contract, for Joe Blanton. Maybe even see if we could get a decent minor league first baseman for Humber.

Milledge would be perfectly expendable over the long term with Martinez, Beltran, Gomez and Fukudome.
Heilman as well with Smith, Sanchez and Kunz. The majority of our prospects are pitchers and outfielders, and Blanton can be a short term and long term solution as a middle of the rotation pitcher.

Mets in 08 have Wagner, Sanchez, Smith, Feliciano, Show, Sosa, El Duque, Pelfrey, Blanton, Perez, Maine, Pedro, Lo Duca, Delgado, Castillo, Reyes, Wright, Alou, Beltran, Fukudome

Mets in 09 have Wagner, Sanchez, Smith, Kunz, Feliciano, Show, Sosa, Mulvey, Blanton, Perez, Maine, Pelfrey, Lo Duca, Free agenct (Dunn, or someone else available), Gotay, Reyes, Wright, Gomez/Martinez (should Martinez be ready, trade Gomez at trade deadline), Beltran, Fukudome.

Your apparent obssession with mediocre trash isn't alike with the GMs of Major League baseball.

So is your obssession with misusing punctuation.

Keep your idiocy to yourself. The reason I'm in trepidation of being a Mets fan right now is because of you. It would be most advantageous of you to stop talking, for you are convincing no one but yourself.
