As noted earlier, Braves 3B Chipper Jones made a few choice comments in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week, which were directed at David
Wright, who won this year’s Gold Glove at third base.
Jones referred to Wright’s success as, “a head scratcher.”
In the New York Post, Mark Hale quotes Wright as saying among other things…
“Honestly I could care less. I respect what Chipper does in this game. I respect Chipper as a player. But what he says to the papers doesn’t mean anything to me personally. I don’t take anything he says to heart.”
…i can understand chipper being snippy had we, the fans, voted…but the Gold Glove is determined by his colleagues…it’s not like wright lobbied the fans, or the team lobbied for him, etc…chipper’s colleagues picked wright…you know, maybe it’s because of dumb comments like this that chipper was ignored by the voters…

chipper’s so dumb..good job to DW for taking the higher road and not saying anything negative about larry
perfectly said by d.wright
Gotta love David. In his own, poilite style, he basically put up a giant “Chipper who?” on good old Larry?
Actually, what would have been hysterical is if DW had called him Larry too!
I gotta say, I hate Chipper and he should keep his damn mouth shut BUT..
Theres really no way that David deserves that award. Ryan Zimmerman is an infinitely better fielder than Wright and by giving this award to David, the whole Gold Glove process kinda loses credibility. Is there a fan in here that’s delusional enough to think that he had the best year as a fielder from 3rd base???
Are you implying it had any credibility in the first place?
If it ever did, Jeter winning one took care of it.
This award lost credibility a LONG time ago. Please see Rafael Palmeiro, 1999……
but did Ryan Zimmerman deserve to win it? that’s what gets me, you guys think its a sham David won it becase of his reputation or whatever and not because of his actual play this year, yet you want to give it to a guy stricly based on reputation. Yes, Ryan Zimmerman is a superior defender to David, but does that necessarily mean he had the best year? He certainly didn’t have a better year than Pedro Feliz, who probably deserved it. Either way, its not a sham David won it, he’s a very good defender, best in the league? no, but her certainly can make a claim to having one the best YEARs with the glove. He made some astounding plays this year. And please children, this is the gold glove, relax.
what are you talking about? did you actually look at the stats?
compared to zimmerman, feliz played in 24 less games (for 211.2 less innings), had 105 less chances, 47 less put outs, and 46 less assists. zimmerman’s range factor was 0.16 better than feliz’, which shows that feliz did not contribute as many outs per nine innings as zimmerman did.
errors is not the only statistic determining this award, nor is it the most valid.
As much as it’s fun to beat up Larry for his comments, Eddie Coleman said almost the same thing but in a much better way

I just think it was a shocking lack of class on Chipper’s part to call DW out in public like that. He had every right to be shocked, but to throw a fellow player under the bus like that in the media was a real scumbag move.
People like to talk about what a “class” organization Atlanta is, but I think there’s a whole lot of arrogance there as well, mostly from the guys who have been there forever, like Larry.
David is a class act and didn’t see the need to stoop to Larry Jones level which is lower than a snake’s belly. Good for David.
don’t waste your breath on a nothing, ugly and arrogant person???
I don’t really know if its that shocking considering the source. We’ve seen this from Larry before. Just this yr he publicly complained about umps, had his little fight thru the media with Smoltz this yr and of course will always do what he can to piss of the Mets fans. I wonder if the winner played for any other team if he would have had anything to say about it.
hey chipper, why dont you cheat on your wife again with a hooters waitress?
this is why dwright is the man.
I see no reason at all that David Wright should not have won the Gold Glove, His glovework is pretty darn good.
It’s his Throwing that sucks… :)
nice point. the golden arm should go to someone else for sure…
Larry is a aging toolbag that needs to keep his mouth shut
Wright is the best at dealing with the media. Not a single inappropriate word has ever come out of his mouth.
Gold gloves are decided by making nasty defensive plays with the glove. Chipper has no range and the bulk of Wright’s errors are his throwing problems. If throwing was factored into gold gloves, Bernie Williams wouldn’t have gotten one… instead of his 4 from 97-2000.
And Chipper has no range, he never has and he never will.
This is from today’s NY Daily News
Bob Raissman:
SNY’s ‘hot’ shot
SportsNet New York takes its Mets reporter, Kevin Burkhardt, out of mothballs this week and turns him into a butterfly, er, host of “Mets Hot Stove.”
This could be the first step in Burkhardt’s SNY role being expanded. David Wright will join Burkhardt, and other assorted hardball geniuses, for tomorrow night’s opener.
Who cares it is a meaning less award that ultimately is decides by Rawlings… Players,coaches..have input but it’s Rawlings call…. Also if the player doesn’t use a Rawlings Glove they WILL NOT win…
Wow. 18 comments without the “A – word”.
I think we’ve turned a corner here.
I’m a happy Mets fan….
41, this is for you.
Chipper Jones comments show exactly what kind of A-RODent he really is. DW = all class. :)
Right on my fellow Mets Man
larry was ignored by voters because his fielding stats were even worse than wright’s. the truth of it is that zimmerman should have won the award soley based on stats (he had the best range factor, played in the most games, had the most chances, and had a very good fielding percentage – when taking altogether these stats are a very good indicator of who should win). wright won, perhaps because he is more famous. it wouldn’t be the first time a player won an award based on popularity and likeability, which is something larry won’t have to worry about because of low-class comments such as these.
Wright winning is a sham and a farce. He’s a butcher with the leather. pretty much on par with jeter winning GG’s in the past.
Jeter is better defensively than DW though.
