I am a Bills fan, and as such I loathe the Jets.

However...

If there has been anyone who has handled the crushing onslaught of the NY Media with the class of a true gentleman it has been Chad Pennington. That guy has been massacred.

BTW, why is it that Jet fans love to think that every single backup QB they have is the future of the franchise?

If you guys head over to Adam Rubin's Blog he makes note of Wright's hat on SNY, but gives no real explanation other then to suggest that it might just be a case of a bad hair cut.

I hope it more about Wright supporting the cancer patients, rather then a bad hair cut.

I think it is a good time for me to apologize for thinking Wright would end up not being the player he obviously is back in April. I recall that I was not alone in being in total panic mode after his disappearing power trick after the All Star game last year into May. There isn't a player in baseball I would trade him for and there is no way I would move him to accomodate the egomaniac from across town.

If ARod wants to play in NY, he can do what he did for the Yankees, come hat in hand and move to Right Field or first base.

If I were in NY I'd definitely spring for the $350 to go to DWs event.

The hat was perplexing. I too noticed that the kids at the hospital were wearing similar caps. I did not know if this was something Wright gave them or if it is some kind of bandage in treating wounds resulting from brain surgery.

Whatever it was, I felt Burkhardt, Darling or Eddie C. should have asked him off the air about the hat. If it is a tribute to the kids in the Pediatirc Cancer Ward, it would have been a nice way to bring attention to the DW Foundation and the worthwile causes it is raising money for like this ward.

Wright will be really fascinating to see his relationship with the NY media over the years. He is certainly the fair-haired darling of the media now and rightly so. There will be a point however where the media will gang up on him and try to beat him down. Its part of the pack mentality of the NY media. It will be interesting to see how he reacts.

All of the previous young players in recent decades to have ascended to this mantle have gone through this transformation where they end up being very aloof and while they always say the right thing they never give anything more than the standard "rah rah, go team, one game at a time, whatever helps us to win" quotes with a certain detachment and near contempt for the press. Jeter has gone through this, Chad Pennington went through it, Piazza, Leiter. I hope the press doesn't ever attack him like some of the other guys above.

D. Wright could wear a monkey on his head for all I care. The guy is great.

Is this really that hard to believe though. I mean, I realized it last night why he was wearing the hat. He was wearing the hat in the clips they showed of him at the hospital with the kids. Some of the kids also had hats on for obvious reasons. D. Wright was most likely wearing that hat all day and night out of respect for those kids and their parents. It could have been a promise to a certain kid or parent, or he could have been doing it for his own reasons. Either way, it was connected to his visit to the hospital.

First we argue about his gloves, now his hats? NY is a tough town.

If you go to mets.com and look at the publicity pictures, the hats the kids were wearing yesterday looked totally different. But Wright has been involved with these kids before so he was aware that they wear hats which leads me to think maybe he donned any white cap merely in a show of solidarity. This would be an awesome gesture and something right up Wright's alley.

I agree with De Rosa completely. Mets fans are lucky to have Wright (and Reyes). We could go another 40 years and they may not come up with a similarly gifted player.

Wright has the tact, leadership and diplomacy of a Jeter but with more charisma. And he doesn't have the personality defects that afflict A-Rod. Count your blessings, Mets fans.

Here's the page with the pictures. Click on the "gallery" link near the top:
