According to multiple reports, the agent for free-agent C Paul Lo Duca has e-mailed reporters saying that the Mets apparently do not see his client as a priority ‘at this time.’
Yesterday, at FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wrote…
“The Mets are expected to re-sign Lo Duca if they fail to lure Jorge Posada from the Yankees.”
Last night, the Yankees and Posada reached agreement on a four-year, $52 million deal.
Of course, one week ago, during an appearance on SNY’s Daily News Live, Rosenthal told the show’s host that Lo Duca is as good as gone from the Mets.
…the thing is, i don’t know if lo duca’s agent’s comments take in to account that posada is now off the market, since that will obviously change up how the Mets approach their need at catcher…nevertheless, it’s not like the Mets are the only team with interest in lo duca…the open-market buzz continues to be that teams such as the Rockies and Marlins will look to lo duca, so if the Mets want him, they should just bring him in…now…

I think they should bring back Lo Duca now as well. Now that Posada is definitely gone, lets hope they stop messing around.
why should they rush to sign Paule? He can’t hit run throw field or keep his mouth shut. If someone else snags him up then fine. I would rather a strong defensive catcher that calls a great game like yorvit. I also wouldn’t mind looking at shoppach.
Does anyone know what parameters Lo Duca is looking for? Are we talking 4 years at $7 mil each or are we talking 2 years at $3 mil each?
I’m sure he would see a 3 mil salary as a bit of a slap in the face. He’s been making 6 mil the last two years. I would assume he’s looking to make 9-10 mil for 3 years, while the Mets would probably like something like 7-8 mil for 2 years. The big name catchers seem to be making 10-13 mil, and he isnt in that class. I just hope they go 2 years with a club option at the longest. Even if it means giving him a little more money per year, its the thing to do.
wouldn’t break my heart if he did get another offer and bolted.
I would like to see the Mets sign Castro quickly as the back up, with the promise that no matter who they pick up, he will get more PT.
Then, work on one of the younger catcher options (I still like Shoppach, but there are other ones out there). Make it part of a more sweeping overhaul, or just bring in a stop gap, which is all that LoDuca would be anyway.
Even Ramon Hernandez on a salary dump will be just as good as Pauile.
Point is, Loduca isn’t that good, he isn’t getting better, and not having him back isn’t going to break the team.
LoDuca gets 2 yrs and $10M from us tops. He also definitely comes back here as opposed to leaving…assuming Mets make him this offer. It is a fair deal and decent amount of time for his level of production and given the scarcity of catchers..
Also, we need to tag on arbitration along with Castillo and Glavine. Lets start loading up on picks and then break the mold and pay the guys who are worth it top money not slotted money to get them in and signed.
Also, there should be a new rule on the draft stuff that allows for some benefit to getting additional picks in the following season if the pick you make does not accept and goes to college or something. Not for every round but possibly the first 4 or 5 rounds. Meaning you draft a guy in the second round who says I am not signing with you for anything less than $3M or I am going to college and reapply for the draft next year. You offer him $1.5M and he does actually call your bluff and goes to college and back in the draft next year. You should either retain the draft rights to him for 3 years or you should get a squeezed compensation pick between round 2 and 3 next year as comp
I’d be careful about giving Glavine arbitration. He wants to go to the Braves, but if the offer’s not there he’d accept in a second. Do you wanna spend $13 million on Glavine next year?
We need a pitcher anyway, and it’s not like he was horrible. He made 7.5 last year, and I’m not sure how much more he’d get at arbitration. The year Maddux went to arbitration he got 14.75. He made 13.1 the year before.
i want omar to sign lo duca… never.
maybe send him a box of consolation tissues since for all the whining he will do.
sign castro, give him a chance at starting and then look for a serviceable back up.
I Agree, Give Castro the oppurtunity, if he falls flat there are others out there, but Lo Duca is done
paulie has more heart than the rest of the team put together!
at least some one cared what happend.
I keep ramon hernandez lol please
Am I the only one, who takes this, as the Mets have zero idea what they want to do at catcher?
It almost feels that way for the whole off season.. they can’t decide who they want, which of their prospects they are willing to part with it..
I dunno.. I just don’t feel like there’s an offeason plan.
I just think pickigns are slim. I don’t think the Mets want Lo Duca (though I doubt they told Lo Duca he’s not a priority) but I think they imagine he’s the best option, but they’re going to consider other things first. the Agent’s commenets make me think there isn’t much interest outside New York, so maybe they’re suggesting they might be looking elsewhere.
I think they have a plan, specifically pitching, but Omar is smart enough not to overpay(hopefully) for some of these guys, specifically in the prospect department.
Offseason officially started (with regard to free agents) last night at 12. We are like 11 hours into the offseason. Cut the management a bit of slack here. MAybe Paulie Walnuts is not the guy they want but they have no reason to sink him or maybe he is the fallback position with their real targets being a trade. Either way…lots of time left in the offseason to execute the plan or adjust it.
castro has to be priority over loduca. other teams actually want to sign ramon
Stay away! Please, stay away!
Loduca’s fine for a 1 year contract with an option for a second year. Two years garanteed is a little much if you ask me. However, given the options, I’d still consider a two year deal.
We’ve gotta sign Castro, and let him play 70 games next year. With no other catchers in our future, we’ve gotta see if Castro can start in 2009. Let him split time with Paul and see how he holds up.
I think Hernanez from Baltimore makes the most sense. A couple of mid-level prospects, take on his contract and, assuming he is healthy, call it a day. Two years ago, prior to his injuries, he had a solid year.
I think Pualie is done with the Mets. He took a few not so veiled shots at his manager last season and i can’t see that working out in the clubhouse. Omar committed to Willie and i can’t see him uundermining him by bringing a critic back. Omar will let Paulie walk like he did when Hulio Franco started taking some shots at Willie.
I think the Mets will re-sign Castro for 2 years. however, Castro has not been able to stay healthy as a back-up, I don’t see the mets counting on him as a starter. I can see them signing Torrealba as the starter with the expectation of him starting about 110 games and Castro starting about 50 games.
However if they sign Castro, can that put some kind of weight clause in his contract, the guy seems to keep him self in horrible shape, which likely affects his durability and throwing as it takes forever for him to get out of the crouch.
You’ve made a good arguement for not signing Castro
Anyone know if Loduca was rated an A or B free agent? I would offer him arbitration at least.
He’s a type B. Supplement round pick.
I guess I have shown his negative. However, the plus side is that the dude can hit. He is a line drive machine and not many catchers in baseball can hit as well as him. That’s why i would take him back.
