Buzz: A-Rod and Yanks Negotiating
By D.J. Short - Nov 14, 2007 1:35 pm

According to Mark Feinsand and Bill Madden of the Daily News, citing ‘a source with knowledge of the situation,’ the Yankees have re-opened negotiations with free-agent Alex Rodriguez, but the team does not want his agent, Scott Boras, involved.

Rodriguez, who has been represented by Boras since he was 16 years old, reportedly approached the Yankees through a third-party intermediary.

According to the source, Rodriguez would be expected to take a 10-year deal worth an estimated $275 million.

The source, as quoted by the Daily News

“Alex is going to be back with the Yankees.  The Yankees don’t have a choice.  How are they going to compete without him?  They need him back.”

…tune in tomorrow for another episode of As the World Turns…i can’t help but be skeptical about this news, but at the same time, a deal between a-rod and the Yankees makes the most sense for both sides…hard to dispute that…stay tuned…

I don’t think A-Rod has a choice. The market for him at the price he and Boras set just isn’t there. As I’ve been saying, no one is going to offer him a package better than what the Yankees already offered him. That’s why he’s been crawling back to the Yankees on his knees.

  2. Ken Dynamo says:

the yankees and a-rod are the worlds most annoying couple. i wish they would just make out and get it over with.

  3. gomets2008 says:

Now he will have this on his shoulders for his Yankee career ..how he opted out because he cares more about money then a championship….the Skanks can have him…..but I also heard they may get Santana….. if they get Arod back….the Mets most certainly have to pony up for Santana..or maybe Bedard…they just have to….if Silva and Torrealba are the only top of the line (haha)new off season acqusitions…..Ill puke.

I understand your point but really, take a look at what is going on over there in yankee land and portray it to what is happening here.

Yanks set to lose all world 3b AROD
Yanks resign Posada (get ripped off with 4 yr 52M contract)
Yanks lose Petite (likely to retirement)
Yanks resign 38 yr closer to 3 yr $45M deal (get ripped off)
      Yanks lose manager
Yanks lose Roger clemens (like us with Glavine) want him gone.

Yanks expect to put Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy in the rotation wiht Mussina and Wang.

Imagine us doing that. REgardless of how good you think 3 rookies will be in the rotation. Our fan base would shoot the mets.

      See the following:

      Mets let Glavine walk
      Mets lose Pedro to retirement
Mets plan to promote Humber, Pelfrey and convert Heilman into the rotation
Mets resign Wagner for 3 yrs and $45M
Mets resign LoDuca for 3 yrs and $25 M
Oh yeah….Wright opts out and goes

We’d all be terrified of the possible result

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

As long as we’re comparing the teams….

2007 yankees – make playoffs with amazing 2nd half performance.

2007 mets – miss playoffs by 1 game after biggest collapse in baseball (maybe sports) history.

it would be kind of hard to ever argue youd rather be in the shoes of fans that just witnessed the worst thing any of them have ever seen in sports regardless of what other teams in others sports they root for.

      • Jay says:

and to compare joba, hughes, and kennedy to pelfrey, humber, and heilman(???) is not fair… they’re not even close in terms of talent.

  4. Achilles400 says:

What is the Yankee payroll going to look like this year if they bring him back at 25M? Just curious in light of Mo and Posada.

  5. AzMetsFan says:

How lame. Yanks need to stand their ground instead of bowing back down to Boras and Arod. You know its only a matter of time until Boras is back in the picture. As it is he’s in the background pulling the strings of this deal.
I’m upset with the Mets at the moment with this whole Catcher debacle, but man would I really hate to be fan of the two faced Yankee organization.

  6. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if the yankees want to throw a ridiculous contract like 10/300 fine be my guest, bc i want the mets to sign him but not that badly. however if they get him at say 8/230 or 7/200 i will be very disappointed in our team.

    • gowrightgo says:

Offer him 6yrs and $150M and that he has to play 1st or 2nd and see what happens.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

how about 6/180. as disgusting as it is to say hes not going to take a “paycut” that ONLY gives him 25 mill a year.

  7. Ceetar says:

This couldn’t cast the Yankees in a worse light, and maybe that’s all A-Rod was doing, was saying ‘hey, I’m not such a bad guy’.

They’re going back on their word.
They’re trying to stage a one-man boycott of an agent, which can only hurt them.
They’re trying to be sneaky by getting around the business guy and talking to just A-Rod.
They’re just shy of demanding that he apologize for opting out and come crawling back and begging.

It’s a joke, and I kind of like A-rod, so I hope for his sake he walks away from this mess.

  8. Number41 says:

I hate to say I told ya so…

    • Saltzy23 says:

To me the Yankees look like a 40 year old single woman who just saw her mortal enemy get married and are fine with a wife beating husband who cheats, just as long as they’re married too….its kinda pathetic….

What a pathetic organization….remember when sports were ‘fun’, or at least they cared about the perception of it being about being ‘America’s past time’, even if they were in the Front Office counting the money…something to pass on to your kids….I hate where its gone….”We hate you, and you hate us, but you’re the means to a possible end for us, and we can give you more of the means that you want than anyone else, so lets pretend we like each other”….

God, I want the Mets to win really really bady, but I hope we never fall into the ‘Yankee Ideology’ of winning at the expense of whats so great about the team and the sport….

  9. ScottN says:

ARod may end up back with the Skanks, but this seems like cooked-up BS to me. Boras not involved? Please. He’s going to be involved stem-to-stern unless Rodriguez fires him as his agent.

Mets should make this guy a big offer with a limited timeline during or shortly after the GM meetings. Then, one way or the other, be done with it.

I’m still betting on the Dodgers for him–just makes the most overall sense (other than the pitcher’s park). But the Mets should make a real offer to the best player in the game who grew up a Mets fan and obviously wanted to be a Met for the ‘01 season. Worst thing that happense is he says yes and we have the best player in baseball on our team.

With the revenue we’ll have from the new ballpark, I don’t see how signing ARod would prevent us from going after some real pitching in ‘08 and beyond. I won’t bother with the Reyes trade thing as I seem to be about the only person who thinks it’s a worthwhile idea to consider.

  10. Magooley says:

The Yankees getting back involved doesn’t really surprise me, but wow, if Arod circumvents Boras to get this deal done then I will be surprised

I agree that I don’t think the market is anywhere near what Boras said it would be. 350 million is ludicrous. I am however, surprised that he just wouldn’t accept the arbitration that Yankees will assuredly offer. He’ll make a lot more than 27 million of his MVP season, even if it is only for next year.

I figured like he did with Maddox, that this would be Boras’ last option — take the big payday this year, and then try again next year. But, next year’s FA crop is so strong, Arod won’t stand out head and shoulders above, like he does this year. So maybe it is best to just take the Yankees deal.

Still going behind Boras’ back surprises me.

    • Xavier22 says:

I do find it hard to believe that he really went behind Bora$’ back, especially as Bora$ has represented forever.

If it is true, it really makes Bora$ appear weak, which will definitely hurt his reputation as a $uperagent.

  11. zer09 says:

This gotta be cooked up bs. It’s probably Boras playing games and providing this “source”. With Cabrera in the mix and Lowell still around, A-Rod’s price is dropping by the minute. What better way to get his price to stay up than throw the Skankees back in the mix? Why would A-Rod go behind his agent’s back and talk to the Yankees? Doesn’t make any sense…

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if that were true and the yankees really wanted to give it to boras theyd come out and say “we’re not resigning arod”

  12. mistermet says:

Oh, too bad. Freddie Coupons was hoping to get Arod for 5 years/55 million….kind of like the lowballing they did with Guerrero. What a joke of a mickey mouse franchise. How about raising the payroll with all of the gigantic limited streams the Wilpons are bringing in? The ticket prices have skyrocketed, but the payroll hasn’t been increased during this time (past 3-4 years).

    FReddie Coupons

    • Ken Dynamo says:

hey, serious question – is there a local high school team near you? you know high schools play for free right, and almost never charge admission to the games? they, rather than a for profit company, seem to be more what your looking for.

  13. BiggieSmalls says:

this all sounds cooked up by the Yankee PR machine b/c they have no right handed bat to fall back on.

First off, if Arod doesn’t want Boras to rep him then why doesn’t he just fire him?

we’re 3 days into the process.. once he gets the Yanks to set their max price he’ll take it to his preferred team to match it.
But I think he wants a 10 year deal in the end.. not 7 or 8.. even for less per year than the 8/230ish the Yanks originally offered.

10/275 is a deal he can ride into the sunset with and look like a hero.. 350 was clearly posturing..

27.5 per is a bargain for his skills… including the drama.

  14. tfc3rid says:

This would not shock me one bit… The Yankees are a team that you can’t take them on their word… Yeah right, if A-Rod opts out they won’t take him back…

Watch all their fans who were killing A-Rod for the last month, come back with open arms…

They are a bunch of phonies…

  15. stickguy says:

Good old brian Cashman. What a lying sack of you now what.

Now, I know that all GMs, agents, etc. posture and spread misinformation. That’s fine, but you can’t come out and make a definitive statement like he did and then go right back to negotiating.

Wonder if he will even bother to address it 9if it is true), or will just say that he only cares about what’s best for the team?

Anyway, if he does return, then we can really hope for him to get real old, real fast (ala Giambi) and drag them down.

  16. ccc_jr says:

I’m calling shenanigans on this one. The Boras BS meter is at a all time high. Trying to force SF & Anaheim to put in their crazy offers for ARod.

  17. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i believe boras isnt involved like i believed rivera and posada when they “threatened” to sign elsewhere. give me a break. boras will probably have a hidden camera in a lapel pin on arods suit, along with a microphone/earpiece on the guy during these meetings.

  18. Jay says:

Wow. How bad do the Yankees look. What did Hank Steinbrenner say about the chance of negotiating with A-Rod after he opted out? “Not a chance.” Riiiiiiiiggghhtt. Just pathetic. And yes, Boras is involved. This so-called unilateral move by A-Rod is just meant to curry favor with the spurned Yankee fans.

  19. BiggieSmalls says:

here’s a little parable I wrote to put the current Arod situation and the negotiating process that we are in the middle of in perspective.

    two rules of negotiating..

    1. Dont bid against yourself

    2. Dont show your interest level until you know your competition and their final price.
