Buzz: Miguel Cabrera Could be Dealt Soon
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 15, 2007 10:26 am

According to Joe Frisaro at MLB.com, there is ‘growing speculation’ that the Marlins could trade 3B Miguel Cabrera before Thanksgiving.

Frisarso cites a ‘league source’ as saying the Dodgers and Angels are the front-runners to acquire Cabrera from Miami.

Yesterday in the Palm-Beach Post, Joe Capozzi wrote that the Marlins have asked the Angels for 2B Howie Kendrick and RHP Nick Adenhart, along with another pitcher and an outfielder.  According to Frisaro, the Dodgers are expected to part with RHP Chad Billingsley, along with OF Matt Kemp, while 1B James Loney and 3B Andy LaRoche also have been mentioned.

…as i said yesterday, it’s sort of sad, not that i want the Mets to use their chips on cabrera, it’s just, even if i did want him, it’s sad to know the Mets would have zero chance to get himthat being said, go Angels…i’d like nothing more than to get cabrera’s bat out of the National League, and specifically the East…

I would be more concerned with the Marlins improving because of all the talent they would get in return.

Matt or anyone out there, I have seen reports that SD is looking for a CF. Any chance that there could be a match with Milledge and others being traded for Young or Peavy? I know SD is incredibly high on both of them as they should be but any match there at all?

  2. koosman3669 says:

We can’t get him because Omar gave them all of our prospects the last two years for LoDuca, Delgado, and Vargas and now the cupboard is bare and we don’t have LoDuca, Delgado can’t hit, and Vargas can’t pitch.

    • sheaheykid says:

I believe the only potentially high impact prospect we dealt to Florida was Gaby Hernandez. It’d be nice to have him but Loduca and Delgado were huge parts of the 2006 squad, a season we all will remember and appreciate for years.

      • extrawhitemeat says:

And he was recently listed in their 10 top as middle to back end starter who can be an innings eater.. Hardly the caliber prospect or player (Howie Kendrick is awesome) mentioned above..

So I agree 100% sheahey.. let’s not start crying over Mike Jacons and Yueresemo Petit (who they’ve since cut I believe).. we sold incredibly high on both of those guys (esp Jacobs who only really had the one incredible month).. good trade for the Mets.. not Omar’s fault the team has fallen a game short each of the past two years

This could have a bearing on the Mets’ pursuit of Johann. If the Dodgers send Kemp or Loney to Florida, I doubt they’re going to be in the mood to package more hot-shots to Minnesota for Santana.

And if the Dodgers fall out of the picture, it reduces the number of likely trading partners by about 25%.

    • gomets2008 says:

I agree…but I would rather see the Mets get Bedard …..I know Santana is the best in baseball ..but I would rather keep some prospects (Milledge) then give them all for Santana….just go get Bedard….then sign Livan….I think next off season will be better for us to replace Pedro as well.

      Rotation??

      Pedro
      Bedard
      Maine
      Livan
      Ollie

are u kidding ?? Now thats solid

    • tfc3rid says:

I completely agree… It would drop the number of suitors for guys like Santana or Sabathia…

It increases the likelihood that the Yankees wil acquire Santana…

  4. lostmet says:

If the deal improves the ability of the Mets to get Bedard, or Haren or even Santana let them make the trade and use up as many prospects from the Dodgers as possible.

  5. extrawhitemeat says:

Howie Kendrick is the most proven player in that list.. but Billingsly is pretty attractive too..

The Dodgers have the better horses then the Angels do..

  6. tfc3rid says:

It would be nice if we still had Bannister…

  7. stickguy says:

Looking at these proposed deals (kendrick is going to be a huge force IMO), it actually makes me lean toward A Rod.

Figure that either team is giving up a ton of talent (heck, Kendrick might be better than Miggy by next year!). Then, they will end up signing him to a huge extension.

So, you end up paying Miggy 20+ millioin a year to get fat and lazy, plus gutting the cupboard of top prospects.

Or keep them, and just give A Rod the money. Based on their current conditioning, I have more faith the A Rod will be productive at 38 than I do about Miggy at 30!

maybe the Mets should push f Mart instead?

  8. napes22 says:

I’d rather the Mets get Kemp or Loney – both those guys are going to be amazing. Too bad we have no means to acquire a guy like that.

  9. ExileInLA says:

With ARod back in the Bronx, Cabrera is both the best 3B and probably the biggest impact bat on the market. Both Dodgers & Anaheim really need him…now it’s all about who blinks first and overpays.

  10. smc says:

You all make excellent points about the ripple effect of a trade for Cabrera on the pitching market. While the Dodgers could be scary with him, I am still not that impressed with their pitching and agree that they wouldn’t have enough to get the “premier” pitcher that we will also be seeking.

That being said, this just might give us a better shot at a Bedard, Haren or even Santana (I just have a funny feeling that A-Rod coming back to the Yankees may mean that they now can use their pitching not for a Cabrera, but for Santana.)

My own prediction— Omar makes a move, but because of asking prices gets Blanton. (Probably Milledge and another picther. If we have to give up a Heilman, I would ask for another player back.) Then we are either looking at Gomez in right or we sign someone (Reggie Sanders?) to fill RF.

    • Trumpzilla says:

Milledge AND someone else for Blanton? Fire Omar now if he’s even contemplating it.

If you can’t get an impact SP, you hold onto Milledge. Blanton is nice but not worth it.

  11. Ed Z says:

If the fish get Kendrick in a trade that would leave Uggla without a position. I wonder if the Mets would take a flyer on him. I know he has a minus glove but that bat is definitely a plus.

  12. breadclock says:

There’s nothing unfortunate. The Mets had a stocked farm system two years ago and were able to take advantage of the Marlins firesale then. They snagged Delgado and LoDuca for Jacobs, Petit, Psomas, Gaby Hernandez and Dante Brinkley.

Omar got solid seasons from from Delgado/LoDuca and made the Mets into a WS caliber team. Unfortunately, the roll of the dice with trading away the farm was for a very tiny WS window of opportunity. Delgado/LoDuca both took turns for the worse age-wise and production-wise and Omar failed miserably last winter to “tweak” his elite level team, resulting in a disintegration to a non-playoff choke team.

We got the big fish from Florida before. We had a realistic chance at the gold ring. The time passed.

We can’t get Cabrera. We can’t get Santana. We have nothing comparable left to deal. And we’re not a WS caliber team needing a “tweak” like last winter, either. We are again a non-playoff team with holes in the field, on offense and pitching-wise. Omar has to spend Fred’s money to fix the team.

    • therealsince86 says:

None of the players traded would help us obtain the Ace we need now. Not without still giving up the same players we would have to now.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

omar wont spend freds money bc fred wont let him. plus havent you been reading all the brilliant posts about not getting arod, our offense is fine we dont need offense. we have an elite offense that cant hit AAAA pitchers or rookies making their debut. Plus most of us can spit farther than castillo can drive the ball, and that once youre past alou (the 5 hole) theres no threat whatsoever; why would omar need to do anything to improve such an impressive colletion of offensive players.

sorry im just still a bit sour on all the nonsense i read on this site about our offense “not being the problem”.

  13. matt_bucc says:

we should be rooting for the Dodgers. That way they have less of a chance at Santana

  14. Ryn5 says:

Sounds good as long as Andy LaRoche, James Loney and Kemp ALL don’t land in FLA.
