Eric Simon of Amazin’ Avenue delves deep for a brilliant analysis of Jose Reyes‘ season on the basepaths.
Perhaps most surprisingly, factoring in pickoffs (12) and number of times caught stealing (21), Reyes finished tenth in efficiency (70%) among the top ten base stealers in the majors this season — and by quite a significant margin.
By comparison, David Wright had a 79.1% efficiency or SB-PO rate.
…sb gain…eqSBR…huh…i think something is leaking out of my brain…anyhow, i think what we learn here is something that everybody was saying as he declined in late August and especially September…yep, Reyes is fast, real fast, but he may need to tone down the aggressiveness just a tad…
…great job, eric…and thanks to jneuman for the link…
Tagged Stats |Earlier today, the Mets officially announced the re-signing of C Ramon Castro to a two-year, $4.6 million contract.
According to multiple reports, the Mets also agreed to a three-year, $14.4 million deal with C Yorvit Torrealba.
…with those both deals reportedly cemented, here is side-by-side comparison of both castro’s and torrealba’s career statistics…
…offense…

| Catcher ERA | 4.16 | 4.27 |
…assuming the Mets catchers split time evenly next season, i wanted to try to predict how each would fare over an 81 game stretch…i took the average stats from Yorvit Torrealba and Ramon Castro over the
last two years, then multiplied them out to see how they would stack up…
Based on his stats over the last two years, if Torrealba plays 81 games next year, he is likely to average eight home runs and 47 RBI, with a .308 OBP while hitting .251.
Over 81 games, Castro will have 14 homers and 38 RBI, with a .327 OBP while hitting .262. Combined, over the course of 162 games, Castro and Torrealba are likely to hit .255, with roughly 20 HR and 85 RBI.
Meanwhile, Paul Lo Duca hit .295, with .333 OBP, while averaging 51 RBI per season over the last two years.
…realistically speaking i see torrealba getting the majority of playing time but it will be interesting to see how it pans out…on another note i will miss lo duca, but am in support of a younger and therefore healthier catcher…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…of course, as we know, lo duca is older and was injured on a number of occasions last season, so it’s difficult to project how he will hold up as he gets older, especially over the next three seasons, which is what a team may have to commit to…additionally, while i view it as a positive, it is becoming quite clear that the Mets felt he was a bit of a distraction last season, be it with off-field issues or speaking out publicly against his manager or fighting them on how to rehab from his aches and pains, among other things, all of which cannot be quantified in stats…on the flip side, from a qualitative stand point, i’m sure the Mets will cite torrealba’s hustle, ability to handle a pitching staff, his desire to win and his age…
Tagged Paul Lo Duca, Ramon Castro, Regis Courtemanche, Stats, Yorvit Torrealba |According to ESPN.com, citing the player’s agent, the Braves made a contract offer to free-agent LHP Tom Glavine.
Glavine’s agent, as quoted by ESPN…
“Now, our intention is to prepare a counter-offer that we will give them by tonight.”
According to the report, the Mets are interested in keeping Glavine and would likely offer more money than the Braves - however, the primary reason he wants to return to Atlanta “is about his family.”
…i am not sure about you, but can this get done already…why is this being so drawn out…we know he wants to be with his family…so just go to your home…
…on a side note, i have not been a fan of glavine since his home opener start in 2003…sorry, but i was severely scarred when the Cubs continuously rounded the bases for an hour straight while i sat among 50,000 or so fans in below freezing temperatures…
…hmmm, there seems to be a coincidence between his first and last start in his Mets career…

During his weekly appearance on WFAN in New York, SI.com’s Jon Heyman had the following to say when asked why the Mets did not bring back Paul Lo Duca…
“I don’t think the Mets ever wanted Lo Duca. I still think they blame him for what happened in the 2006 playoffs, I think they think he didn’t call the right pitches…they seem to blame Lo Duca. I don’t think they ever wanted him. He was like an option of last resort, in case every thing else didn’t work out. I think they just pefer Torrealba, that’s the bottom line.”
To listen to Heyman’s entire 15–minute interview, during which he also discusses the availability of Johan Santana and the center-field market, go to WFAN.com.

The Pirates declined SS Cesar Izturis‘ $5.45 million club option for 2008, making him a free agent, according to MLB.com.
Izturis, who has prior second-base experience, batted .258 in 110 games last season.
According to Jim Molony at MLB.com, the Phillies have officially released 2B Tadahito Iguchi, making him a free agent.
The Mets are mentioned by Molony as a possible destination, along with the Twins, Padres and Dodgers.
…at the very least, the Mets should talk to iguchi and use him for leverage, as Luis Castillo wanting four years is a bit much, and i’m not sold on David Eckstein by any means…if he’s willing to accept a friendlier contract than castillo or eckstein, it may be worth considering since the second-base market is so thin…
According to the Denver Post, citing ‘a source close to the
negotiations,’ the Cubs are ‘pressing hard’ to sign free-agent 2B Kaz Matsui - and could offer him a three-year deal worth rough $15 million.
WGN Radio’s Dave Kaplan recently reported the Cubs could complete a deal with Matsui by the end of this week, notes MLB Trade Rumors.
…why are the Cubs stockpiling infielders…seriously, how many do they actually have now…every time i look up, their importing another second baseman, who can also play short…odd strategy…
…anyway, if kaz is seeking - and can get - a three-year deal, and Luis Castillo is rumored to be seeking a four-year deal, maybe castillo isn’t as crazy as i thought…also, this would suggest that David Ecksetin can sign for a similar deal to what kaz gets, i would think, since they put up similar numbers…
In 410 at-bats for the Rockies last season, the 32–year-old Matsui hit .288 with four HR, 24 doubles and 32 stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Eckstein, who is also 32, hit .309 in 434 at-bats for the Cardinals, while stealing 10 bases with 23 doubles.
