According to ESPN.com, citing the player’s agent, the Braves made a contract offer to free-agent LHP Tom Glavine.
Glavine’s agent, as quoted by ESPN…
“Now, our intention is to prepare a counter-offer that we will give them by tonight.”
According to the report, the Mets are interested in keeping Glavine and would likely offer more money than the Braves - however, the primary reason he wants to return to Atlanta “is about his family.”
…i am not sure about you, but can this get done already…why is this being so drawn out…we know he wants to be with his family…so just go to your home…
…on a side note, i have not been a fan of glavine since his home opener start in 2003…sorry, but i was severely scarred when the Cubs continuously rounded the bases for an hour straight while i sat among 50,000 or so fans in below freezing temperatures…
…hmmm, there seems to be a coincidence between his first and last start in his Mets career…

sweet, one extra draft pick coming our way. hes all yours stupid stupid atlanta.
Good riddance, I’ll gladly take the 16th overall pick thank you very much.
It also helps us because we have the luxury of facing him 5 or so times next season. He’s adding wins even when he’s gone – Amazing!
18th
Would it be a sandwich pick too?
this could be bad since the mets winning percentage against pitchers with 4+ eras is .000%
lets hope its REAL soon so we can get that draft pick without having to worry about whether or not the mets offer arbitration….what # is that pick anyway? 18th?
We better get draft picks in exchange!!!!!!!!
Out of curiousity, would anyone happen to know if Mike Cameron, Torii Hunter, or Aaron Rowand qualify as “better” players than Glavine?
The question, comes from the idea that should the Braves obtain a better player than Glavine (for Centerfield or whatever) via Free Agency, the Draft pick the Mets would as compensation would slide to a Second Rounder, correct?
Sandwich pick perhaps…
I replied to this earlier, but it seems to have been eaten by the censor.
Rowand is rated higher than Glavine (by a slim margin). Cameron is a Type B. Hunter is rated lower than Glavine.
I’ll try to post the link to the FA rankings in a separate post.
What he said, but really, if the Braves weren’t willing to pony up the cash for Andruw Jones. What makes you think they would for Rowand? Seems like a longshot at best.
FYI: The only Free Agent who rankes higher then Glavine in the Elias rankings is Aaron Rowand, in any position. So as they don’t sign him we’re fine.
One thing, I made a mistake. Mike Lowell is also ranked higher, but that one doesn’t make any sense for the Braves either.
According to ESPN.com the Braves have made an offer and Glavine is preparing a counter-offer to give the Braves tonight.

I believe it is the 18th pick also… I have heard the 19th though… 2008 is supposed the a great draft… Bye Bye Turd boy
You guys are quick. I’m curious, how important is it to have more than one leftie in the rotation? What lefties could start for the Mets next year (besides Perez)?
It’s nice, but not required by any stretch of the imagination.
I would assume we’re more focused on getting a quality pitcher rather then a righty or a lefty.
Don’t we need to offer arbitration to get the pick?
If he signs before arb is offered the pick is automatic…
Thus, the rockies will get a second round pick for us signing Torre/alba
Torrealba was a type “B” free agnet, so the Rockies get a sandwich pick not a 2nd round pick from the Mets…..only Type “A” picks do you have to surrender a pick to the team that lost the player, and the losing team also gets a sandwich pick as well…That is why Michael Barret will be a tough sign, he is a type “A” for some reason
I realized recently that I was at what might have been both Glavine’s best and worst games as a Met. Not only was I at that last start of the season this year, but I was also at that game (I think it was 04) where he was no-hitting the Rockies into the 8th.
So long Tommy G. Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya. I always struggled to root for you. Rooting against you again will feel most refreshing.
I dunno how valuable a first round pick is in baseball (compared to, lets say the NFL)…but it would be nice to use that pick to help land an ace in a trade.
Cannot trade draft picks in baseball…
However, mid to late first round in MLB is where players end up that teams can’t afford to sign… Like Boras players…
We got Milledge and Pelfrey because they fell down because of ’signability’ issues.
To be fair, Milledge and Pelfrey were both drafted well before the 18th pick still. I believe Pelfrey was 9th and Milledge was 13th.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped people like Rick Porcello (Argueably the 2nd best pitcher in the draft last year) falling to 27th because he was thought to be ‘extremely difficult to sign’.
i dont think you are allowed to trade draft picks. i could be wrong though. but either way a 1st round pick especially if used on a college player can pay fairly quick dividends.
A first round pick is valuable in any draft. Guys who command high bonuses usually slip in the draft because people are afraid. Mets should go draft the best available talent regardless of position.
completely agree, with the state of our farm we should go BPA. even if the guy is a SS or 3B, you can always convert them in the minors so theyre ready to play where you need them by the time they get to the big leagues.
JETER THE TAX CHEAT
New York state tax officials want Derek Jeter to pay hundreds of thousands — possibly even millions of dollars — in back taxes and interest for the years 2001 to 2003, when he claimed Florida residency despite spending the bulk of his time in New York.
An administrative judge’s ruling shows that Jeter has claimed Florida residency since 1994. New York state isn’t going back that far, but it does want it’s cut from Jeter’s check from after be bought a $13 million apartment in Manhattan. Jeter made $34 million in salary from 2001 through 2003 and likely millions more in endorsements.
THROW HIS QUEER ASS IN THE SAME CELL WITH BONDS SO THEY CAN BANG EACH OTHER.
Jeter won’t go to jail and he shouldn’t. He is right not to pay NYS Income tax because he’s a resident of Florida. It’s tricky with athletes and the tax laws/authorities go after these guys. Jeter is only in NY about 120 days a year (81 home games) so it’s hard for NY to claim he’s a full time resident.
Football players often have to pay tax to a state when they play a road game equal to 1/16 their annual income even though they spend one day in a year there!
FINISH HIM!
Watch him win 20 games next year. And throw a no hitter.
I was at that home opener too, nothing says baseball like Winter Coats, Hats and Gloves, it was freezing. And Boy Did Glavine suck, Galvine got Lit up in his 1st start as a Met and He got Lit up in his last start as a met, Screw you Glavine, the next time i see you on a shea mound I will be booing you, whether you are wearing a Braves Jersey or a Mets Jersey, you will Always be a Brave and Despised by this Mets Fan.
Tom Glavine to the braves. Hope it gets done real soon. Helps us out 2 times. The pick and we get to face him 4 times next year. No doubt our guys are gonna feast on his mediocre slop
Glavine was a consistent and valuable Met for most of his time in NY. He is however clearly not dominant or overpowering. If he goes to Atlanta he will likely be a #4 starter, and at this point in time, that is probably about right. One interesting way to look at it, Pedro/Smoltz, Hudson/Maine, James/Perez, Glavine/Hernandez?, Pelfry?, Humber?, Sosa? Are the Mets ahead or behind at #4? The mets looked to Glavine to be a #1 or #2 his entire time in NY. He did admirably, however I am as well ready for the soap opera to be done.
I’d like us to sign Silva to replace him. Silva would be a nice upgrade over Glavine, and if we can make a trade to get a #1/#2, we’d have a pretty formidable rotation capale of throwing a lot of innings.
Agree on the way to use the mid 1st rounder. Need more talent in the system, and the ability to sign the high-end picks should be used more.
You’ve got to be kidding me. Silva is an upgrade over Glavine?
Glavine stunk his last three starts of the season but consider this:
-Hehad 23 quality starts (6 or more innings pitched and 3 or less runs given up) last year. That was 5th in the NL.
-In the last two series against the Phils he made 2 starts, threw 14.2 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, 14 hits and 2 walks.
Silva is not an upgrade over Glavine. He pitched 1 more inning last year than Glavine.
I’m not arguing that we should bring Glavine back but the description of his season last year in these threads are a lot of revisionist history. He will not be easily replaced.
Silva pitched in the AL, is several years younger, and is on the upside of his career. He’s an upgrade.
Silva is an overweight number 4 pitcher that you have to pay 10 million a year for the next 4 to 5 years… The only thing he would upgrade is the team’s total body weight and their payroll.
i was at
me too!
i was at blank 2! LULZ!
i was at* that game and i remember leaving with my dad in like the 4th inning when it was a complete blow out, then Lenny Harris got up for the cubs and the mets fans went crazy chanting LENNY LENNY haha, i think he got a hit too and he was tipping his hat to the sarcastic crowd. I love us.
playing shortstop for the new york yankees: derek “taxcheata”
good luck to tommy g. time to move on unless there are only lesser alternatives
The way that last game went., Ugh, it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, watching glavine just drown out there. I will never be able to forgive him for that…
However……
If we have the chance to re-sign him, we have to., Why? Because there isn’t much better out there that can be had without dismantling our farm system.
Would you rather have Glavine out there every 5th day? or say, Mike “They got Bats on our” Pelfry?
As bitter as we feel towards Glavine right now, He really is a good pitcher, who can help us in 2008. And i’d rather see him in orange and blue, than doing the Tomohawk chop.
He also helps the braves bullpen tremendously since he would be the #3 in front of James who was only able to give the Braves 160 innings pitched.
I was just as frustrated as any Mets fan last year at Glavine’s last 3 games in 2007 but holding a grudge is like holding your breath and hoping the other guy passes out. It gets you nowhere.
That being said it seems pretty apparent he’ll be in Atlanta next year.
definitely prefer Pelfrey to Glavine every 5th day…….Glavine clearly relies more on the umpire’s strike zone than talent. Say it with me now, “It’s time to move on…..”
Yeah, Glavine will be running back here to spend another year away from his family and get booed by his fans. He wants out, we want him out. I’m predicting 8-14 with a 5.03 ERA for him next year. As great as his mechanics are, that arm is worn out. He gets off to a quick start, but about 10 starts in he’s hitting 82 on the gun with his fastball, and 77 with his changeup, and boom-boom-boom.
He had a tough run with us–I think the bad Mets teams did more damage to him than vice-versa. The last start wasn’t even the breaking point. The fact that such a clever guy never once said “I feel terrible that I let the fans down” showed that he didn’t give a crap about being a Met. That was the last straw.
Makes sense from a baseball and a fan standpoint to let him go.
I’m much more comfortable rooting against Glavine than I was for him.
This works great, too, for Carlos Delgado because Glavine is the only pitcher in the NL that won’t be able to strike him out with inside heat.
