News: 2B Iguchi is a Free Agent
By Chris Mazzone - Nov 16, 2007 3:13 pm

According to Jim Molony at MLB.com, the Phillies have officially released 2B Tadahito Iguchi, making him a free agent.

The Mets are mentioned by Molony as a possible destination, along with the Twins, Padres and Dodgers.

…at the very least, the Mets should talk to iguchi and use him for leverage, as Luis Castillo wanting four years is a bit much, and i’m not sold on David Eckstein by any means…if he’s willing to accept a friendlier contract than castillo or eckstein, it may be worth considering since the second-base market is so thin…

    Sounds good.

  2. No_Brain_Willie says:

If Castillo wants more than 1 year, I’d much rather sign Tad Iguchi to play full time.

  3. 1-18-31-7 says:

ill take Tad. especially if he comes cheap.

  4. Magooley says:

My first choice would be Castillo, but for only two year (perhaps with an option for a third), but barring that, I would much rather have Iguchi than (yuck) Eckstein.

  5. BigHangWithEm says:

I like Tad much more than the cute little elf and Castillo

  6. Krusty The Klown says:

he is a righty tho. that’d mean iguchi, wright, alou, torrealba/castro, and milledge would be righties while only reyes and beltran would be switches having switch hitters was one of the mets major strengths in 06.

    • NYMetz6986 says:

ehh iguchi isnt bad against righties and this would allow for more playing for gotay against righties which could be a good thing…maybe this could be and effective semi-platoon if castillo gets away…honestly i think theres no major difference between iguchi, castillo, and eckstein…i think we should just make sure that we get one of those 3.

  7. genius says:

    yes to tad

  8. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

id rather have iguchi than castillo or eckstein. iguchi did pretty well for the phillies as a starter and even a pinch hitter (since you have to figure gotay will get some starts). hes not gonna have much in the power department since he’ll be at shea as opposed to cellular and cbp. on the whole hes got more pop than castillo, and id assume less health issues. and hes pretty much better than eckstein at everything other than BA.

  9. GuruMets says:

He’s about on par with Castillo IMO. Castillo has better speed, but Iguchi has some pop. I’d rather take a risk with him, then resign Castillo for 4 years. And I don’t want Eckstein at all, dirty does not =good.

  10. ChiliGTC says:

Iguchi’s stats are pretty comparable to Eck, Castillo, and Matsui. I am all for Iguchi/Gotay platoon…..it worked in 1986, so let’s bring it back in 2008!

  11. Kalihan42 says:

I think any of these guys could serve our purpose. I think Castillo might work the best with the rest of our infield, Ek. probably would be the best value (skill to cost), Iguchi may give the best production (although he could not hit 2nd). Kaz I don’t think is a return option. He did not perform in NY last time. let him go to Chicago. I can heckle him when i go to Wrigley this year (I am now a chicago resident).

  12. Slob says:

He’ll be a better deal than Eckstein or Castillo, and probably more productive too. But he’s still not good.

  13. Ken Dynamo says:

i’d rate them iguchi>castillo>eckstein but none of them are anything special. if we CANT go with with gotay and easley then i’d say make iguchi your priority. god FA sucks this year. you know how bad its going to get when it comes time for starting pitchers?

  14. gomets2008 says:

I’ll pass on Guch…..I dont like any of the 3 to be honest…I hope they all sign elsewhere and we get Odog in a trade…nuff said.

  15. Wow! I totally forgot he was a free agent! Let’s get Tad. He did really well for the Phillies in that time Utley was out. 4 years for Castillo is WAY too much.

  16. djbutler says:

Assuming a full healthy 162 games

    Iguchi:
Opening Day Age 33, Prediction at Shea: .275ba .345obp .420slg with 15sb 10hr. Good range, Good glove. I’d go as high as 2 years $8 mil or 3/11.

    Eckstien:
Opening Day Age 33, Prediction at Shea: .285ba .350obp .360slg with 20sb 5hr. Average Range, Average glove. (I’d pay more for Eckstien because he canplay SS, of his has ample postseason experience and a higher ceiling based on past performance). I’d go as high as 2/11 or 3/16.

    Castillo:
Opening Day Age 32, Prediction at Shea: .295ba .365obp .360slg with 25sb 5hr. Good Range, Good glove. (Ceiling not as high as Eckstein, but I’d pay a bonus for his experience as our previous year 2B). I’d go as high as 2 years $12mil or 3/15.

    Gotay:
Opening Day Age 25, Prediction at Shea: .280ba .350obp .400slg with 5sb 10hr. Poor Range, Average Glove. Under contract, likely to resign for $400k

Based on this I would sign the X Factor (Eckstein), more roster flexibility with 2B/SS, which would be nice if Reyes went down. Also, roster flexibility and Eckstein being a right handed hitter gives us a chance to see Gotay with more ABs as a switch hitter against righties.

    • ChiliGTC says:

are these your predictions or off some scouting report? name your sources, dammit!

      • djbutler says:

Predictions based on random effects model program I’ve been working on with park adjusted three year averages. Predictions are just that predictions, no model is perfect, however, these numbers don’t stray to far from the players three year average assuming healthy 162 game season, which you can confirm by reviewing any baseball encyclopedia (or baseball-reference.com).

  17. Number41 says:

Jeff Kent is your best best at second.

  18. ChiliGTC says:

Checking out ESPN player profile, Iguchi looks to be a good defender with only 6 errors each of the last 2 seasons. Problem is he is no #2 hitter. So with him in the fold, you have Torreabla batting 7th and Iguchi batting 8th….do you put L Millz in the #2 hole?

    • ChiliGTC says:

…..and if you trade L Millz for a pitcher which is probable, then the team is really screwed balance-wise!

    • Number41 says:

where’s the meat in these guys
      not a championship line up
that’s why I say Jeff Kent
one at a time, our line up is going to a very average batter
      what’s the plan?

  19. adropofvenom says:

I’m very interested to hear what his asking price is….in terms of the type of player they are I think he’s every bit as good as a Castillo or an Eckstein, but depending on the numbers and the seeming hype surrounging Castillo and Eckstein more, theres a chance he might be cheaper to get. He’s not your prototypical #2 hitter, but with OBP’s around .350 each of the last two years I can’t imagine him being bad at it, and if it doesn’t work out we can always re-try one of Milledge, Beltran, or Wright as a #2 hitter (Probably Milledge).

  20. Giaco says:

who are these random posters – mazzone? – no intro to the readers??

  21. CleonJones says:

I agree with a poster above who called for trading for Orlando Hudson. Unfortunately, we probably have to save our chips for a good starter instead which means losing out on a Hudson. Maybe Hudson is someone we can target at the trading deadline instead. At least that way we know what chips we have to offer. Right now, we don’t know where any of our young talent will be dealt and for what pitcher in return.

  22. mrosey says:

I still think Tad is the best option out there. I watched a lot of White Sox games with my brother, he became a “fan” soon before they won the World Series and the guy can play. Pretty good glove. Can do a lot with his bat and would fit well into our needs, in my opinion.
