The Mets have officially announced the re-signing of C Ramon Castro to a two-year, $4.6 million contract.
Mets GM Omar Minaya, on Castro…
“We are glad to have re-signed Ramon…He has developed into the kind of hitter who you want to come up in clutch situations. In addition to what he brings on the field, Ramon is a tremendous presence in the clubhouse.”
…actually, that should not be undervalued, in that when i ask any person connected to the team about ramon, they are all certain to mention his sense of humor and his ability to keep people smiling and positive…
…nevertheless, i do have concerns about him, should he end up getting the majority of playing time…if it’s a straight platoon between him and Yorvit Torrealba, i think it could work out, since it will allow willie the ability to ‘play the hot hand’…however, i still do not trust castro as a bulk-of-the-time catcher…

I love Castro…I hope he starts opening day..lol…but probably not…based on the contract we reportedly gave to Yorvit Pukealba
Well, at least half our ctaching tandem is good.
Welcome back, Cabeza Larga!
Type in Torrealba and spell check it….tries replace it with “terrible”
How ironic…
Hey look at it this way… we got much younger at catcher and we get to see Castro more often…. on top of that, we get a supplemental draft pick when LoDuca signs with another team
….seems like a good deal
I think that is humorous and coincidental, but not an exampl of irony.
I mean “example”
Tell me if this idea is wacky:
Could Castro see any time at first base, if Delgado looks like he’s having another subpar year?
Yes, it’s wacky. He would be worse than Mo Vaughn. No chance.
Here’s the thing…
As good of a hitter that Castro is, will the Mets now HAVE to carry a third string catcher as a backup??? Who will that be>?
We should try to acquire Ryan Doumit. He’s a good hitter and an adequate emergencey catcher.
we should get salty for 1st base!
ramon is the backup catcher. dont know where this platoon talk is comming from. if anything he will be 1 starters regular catcher. that doesnt make for a platoon.
Matt,
Just out of curiosity, was there anything specific said that would lead you to believe Castro could get the bulk of the catching duties, to bring out your comment that you don’t trust him as a fulltime catcher? Or was it just a sort of, ‘by the way’ comment? I was just confused, because I was never under the impression we had any plans to use him as our fulltime catcher.
We all witnessed the importance of having a good backup catcher late last season when both LoDuca and Castro hit the DL at the same time. Having to rely on a guy like Mike DeFelice for 40 starts in 2008 is a scary thought. Re-signing Castro is a smart, smart move.
“should he end up getting the majority of playing time”
Yorvit – $4.8 million per year
Ramon – $2.3 million per year
Money Plays.
What? A Ramon Castro posting and no storm trooper head?
Matt, you must be too busy charting the number of hits on the site…
omar is clearly just looking out for his own kind here, how could you not re-sign mike defilice. that guys a gritty hustling fiery competitor…..JUST KIDDING, im happy we got castro back i was getting nervous at the end of the year bc i thought he’d go somewhere else for a starting gig, glad to see hes gonna be back next year. i know he can be prone to breaking down but id like to see his bat in the lineup as much as possible.
With Castro all set, let’s bring back LoDuca, forget Torrealba. Catching was not what failed us this past season. Focus on pitching PLEASE!!!
its nice to hear someone say something good about a player’s clubhouse presense that is not named loduca. this comment about castro got me thinking about a guy who seemed to be the type of “emotional leader” that was missing last season.
how about bringing back Cliff Floyd and splitting time in LF the same way the team is planning on doing with the catchers? (just as long as it doesnt effect at bats for lastings)
I’m new here so don’t kill me but…
Why the mistrust of Castro as the starting catcher? Granted he is somewhat injury prone, but show me a catcher who isn’t. Since he has been in a Mets uniform he has done nothing but produce when given the chance.
That being said, I kind of like the idea of a catching platoon. It just doesn’t make sense to do it with these two catchers.
In the last three seasons, Castro HAS been given multiple opportunities to start many games in a row (given the fact that the catching position IS prone to injury) and he’s proven that he tires. His body wears down even in a back up role, and he just gets tired when playing too many games in a row. Platooning him really is the best option, in having him around. He DOES produce when given the chance, provided that chance is in spot starts.
Which other catcher would you suggest they platoon Castro with, and how would you go about obtaining him.

This week, the contemporary Mets have taken two steps to guard against the dreaded passed ball, agreeing to a contract with free agent Yorvit Torrealba and re-signing BACKUP catcher Ramon Castro.
My oh my. Are we really using “Castro’s humor and the smiles he brings to the players faces” as one of the reasons it was good to bring him back. I dont care how good his jokes are, because this 2 bad catcher platton we are being sold on has me thinking the joke is on us.
