Buzz: Torrealba’s Shoulder?

November 17, 2007 at 23:31 pm · 55 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The Associated Press is reporting that the Mets ‘ended’ negotiations with free-agent C Yorvit Torrealba.

Meanwhile, in a report for MLB.com, citing a person familiar with the team’s negotiations, Marty Noble writes that Torrealba’s right shoulder might have been the cause.

the more i think about it, though, the more i just can’t buy that it’s a shoulder issue…i mean, the Rockies, who watched him all season go in and out of the trainer’s room, offered him a two-year deal, so how big of a deal could his health have been

Of course, Noble also explains, “Another person indicated the reason wasn’t related to the results of any tests other than a routine physical.”

…either way, what’s interesting is that the team and even Omar Minaya are telling people that talks are off, over, done, and will not resume…it is what it is…so, basically, no torrealba for you

Good Riddance

TilMetsDoUsPart November 17, 2007 at 11:36 pm

I hope you’ve had the time of your life.

TilMetsDoUsPart November 17, 2007 at 11:36 pm

OK, then it’s set in stone: The fat hispanic offspring of Joe Torre and Jessica Alba isn’t going to the Mets.

Gomez, Gotay and Humber for Garza, sign Iguchi and Lo Duca.

squad November 17, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Wow, that’s an awful lot for just Garza. If they throw in Redmond I would say go for it. He would be a nice tag team partner for Ramon.

TilMetsDoUsPart November 17, 2007 at 11:48 pm

If we had Iguchi we’d be trading excess. Garza, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez, Mulvey, Niese and Guerra are enough starting pitching prospects for me.

squad November 18, 2007 at 12:48 am

Just because it’s excess doesn’t mean we should just throw it away for recklessly.

icedrake523 November 18, 2007 at 12:30 am

You can get Garza for Carlos Gomez (Twins LOVE him) and a pitcher.

BSMITTYFDNY November 18, 2007 at 1:12 am

I want Garza pretty bad too but not for all the guys you mentioned. Gomez and a lower tier pitcher is enough.

TilMetsDoUsPart November 18, 2007 at 11:24 am

Humber is pretty lower tier…

Ryn5 November 17, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Mitchell Investigation.

baseballdad November 17, 2007 at 11:41 pm

My thoughts exactly, taken to speed up healing of that shoulder.

BIG17EASY November 17, 2007 at 11:41 pm

You very well could be correct.

mrose November 17, 2007 at 11:57 pm

never stopped Omar before lol…

I’m not sure what to think of this…I’m honestly less interested in what we do for C and 2B, I just am interested if Omar can make some moves for Pitching!!!

The Glider November 18, 2007 at 12:39 am

I bet you’re right, Ryn. Good call.

I’m still not satisfied with what I’ve heard from the media so far. Just a lot of bs.

gometzies_18 November 18, 2007 at 12:52 am

my first thought … but how would they know hes on “the list” now, and not two days ago when they offered him the deal?

ReyesRocks November 17, 2007 at 11:55 pm

There is certainly something “fishy” about this.
What I get is that either his arm is still hurt, he may be on that “list”, or another option has opened up for the Mets. It really looks as if it was the Mets that pulled out of the deal.

NYMetz6986 November 18, 2007 at 10:18 am

or maybe wilpon had to overide it bc it was such a terribly stupid deal giving 15 mil dollars to a backup catcher.

Krusty The Klown November 18, 2007 at 12:02 am

this is complete BS! what a disgusting franchise. matt I think it’s time to get some new tshirts

mrose November 18, 2007 at 12:06 am

i dunno…you could be right..or possibly reserve judgement until all details come out dude….

Ryn5 November 18, 2007 at 12:27 am

It’s about time to start banning trolls.

sheabren November 18, 2007 at 10:14 am

Go for it. No one here needs you anyway. IF YOU ARE NOT A LOYAL METS FAN WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?

matt_bucc November 18, 2007 at 12:10 am

screw you krusty. go root for another team

Krusty The Klown November 18, 2007 at 12:38 am

what other franchise would could a complete boneheaded manager in willie? It’s not that fair to compare the mets to the yankees but they do both play in the same town and they both have alot of funds! The yankees didn’t want torre to come back after leading them to 12 straight playoff appearances. while willie has led them to 3 straight losing septembers, and choke in the 06 offs and a complete choke in 07! Omar is disgusting, what has he done ever since the perez trade? Any1??? I guess marlon anderson was decent but it’s not like that is a big impact. who will be them mets starting catcher now? what about 2nd? or a freakin number 3 starter? or some pen? omar is a complete moron and he has single handedly driven this team into a bad bad badddd franchise.

matt_bucc November 18, 2007 at 1:00 am

who else would have signed pedro martinez? carlos beltran? think we would have made the nlcs two years after finishing in last place without either of those players? who set up an environment that carlos delgado and billy wagner wanted to play in? you preferred braden looper, right? and jason phillips? jeff duncan was a good center fielder. if omar has DRIVEN this team into a bad franchise, i’m not sure what it was before he got here.

maybe you’re just bitter because he didn’t open up a spot so danny garcia could play every day and he let richard hidalgo go.

Joe Bacci November 18, 2007 at 12:34 am

Dear Omar,

Please do the right thing and bring Paul Lo Duca back. You owe that to us, the fans.

Sincerely,

Joseph Bacci

RespectDaBestRM November 18, 2007 at 12:48 am

why would lo duca want to come back and if he does accept talking to the mets, hte conversation will start with 3 years.

DWright is King November 18, 2007 at 12:56 am

for those that want lo duca back..i think omar may have burned that bridge. lo duca was interviewed by sny today(before the torrealba story broke) and he basically said he wanted to finish his career here, wanted to retire as a met, but the organization obviously didn’t want him.

thanks omar..wut r u gonna do now, huh?

DWright is King November 18, 2007 at 1:02 am

possible scenarios:(got these from a Rockies blod)

-he failed his physical. His shoulder has been bothering him for some time, it might be in worse condition than what he or the Rockies have let on.
-It was leaked to the Mets that he’s on the BALCO list. He was in San Francisco from 2001 to 2005, and that seems to correlate well with the time frame being looked at by the feds there. This would also explain the Mets backing off so fast. A related one might be a pending positive PED test.

Number41 November 18, 2007 at 5:08 am

excuse my ignorance; but would’nt blood testing for drugs and steroids and HGH and such be part of every physical when players are being offered these huge contracts?

DaveSchneck November 18, 2007 at 8:36 am

I’m sure the players union doesn’t allow drug and steriod tests as part of contract physicals.

jaxson November 18, 2007 at 8:46 am

I can’t believe how many fans are expressing how the Mets are screwing up. This off season is still very young and I refuse to believe that the Mets wont do their best to improve the team. I have no doubt that they will make a big move during the winter meetings – maybe something that is not on the fans radar right now. Lets give it some more time.

And as for those praising the Yanks moves – It seems to me that all they did was sign players that were theirs already. So basically they have the same team as last year – and lets not forget, they had a little melt down of their own. Anyway, we should be more worried about the Phillies moves. I don’t want to lose to them again.

x-nady November 18, 2007 at 10:42 am

The voice of reason!

This is the BEGINNING of hot stove season. What moves Omar makes with pitching is going to determine how this team fairs next year, not with who he signs at 2b (of which i know a lot of fans that would be fine with Gotay there…although I am still not sold) and a catcher to share time with Castro.

And another thing, when did this Yankee attitude of entitlement and winning infect our fans? Remember how far we have come in 3 short seasons! Yea, we stumbled last year, but our core guys still remain. And I for one am not going to break out “the end is near” signs because a part time catcher with arm trouble who has played less that 2 full seasons as an everyday starter is not coming to the mets for 5 mill a year.

VCarver November 18, 2007 at 9:04 am

And this is why it was so dumb not to protect Jesus Flores. He would make a nice complement to Castro next year and they wouldn’t have had to worry so much about getting someone else.

They knew last winter they would probably be in the market for a new catcher right about now because I can’t imagine they just suddenly grew disenchanted with Lo Duca this year, especially if part of their problem with him is his game calling. They knew their catching depth was paper thin, and they should have known the free agent options for catcher wouldn’t be great this year. The failure to protect Flores is such a head-scratcher. Sorry to keep harping on him, but it just keeps standing out as an example of poor management. Especially in light of the Torrealba news.

stickguy November 18, 2007 at 9:19 am

Yeah, it was a move that was roasted at the time, and looks especially bad now.

ChiliGTC November 18, 2007 at 9:07 am

Now what? I like Ramon Castro offensively, but his defensive abilities are really lacking and his physical frame doesn’t seem to be able to handle the daily rigors of catching…..

stickguy November 18, 2007 at 9:20 am

I am going to start a bandwagon campaign for the independant league guy. That would be a great feel good story!

I might even go look up his name, since “independant league guy” isn’t going to fit on his jersey. Also sounds too much like “cow bell man”

stickguy November 18, 2007 at 9:18 am

It must have been a problem with Torrealba (physical or “the list”). I don’t see how it could be the Mets suddenly deciding they had a better offer.

FOr one thing, if they pulled that move, it would make them look like complete hypocrits, and lose credibility. Might also viiolate the CBA.

It is bad form for players to back out of a deal, but it does happen. Teams though are really heald to a different standard. If you make an offer that is accepted (and especially if reported too!), even if pending physical, you have to honor it, no matter what gets offered after tthat.

VCarver November 18, 2007 at 9:40 am

This is what I don’t understand …

If it was a problem with his shoulder, then that means O’Dowd and/or the Rockies doctors are incompetent because they more than anyone else should be aware of Torrealba’s physical condition. And O’Dowd offered him 2yrs-$7M which is considerable. So are the Mets doctors just so much more cautious? We don’t even know if Torrealba had a physical with the Mets doctors.

If it was a problem with being in the Mitchell report, well Omar already said he wasn’t going to let that determine his offseason moves. Did he change his tune? Personally I think being linked to PEDs should be considered highly when signing a player, but Omar already showed with Mota that he doesn’t care. It would actually be nice if Omar is finally seeing the downside of signing these players.

NYMBosco November 18, 2007 at 10:11 am

Omar’s strategy to fill the catcher position was flawed making jorge posada a top priority. He had no shot at signing posada so it was stupid to make this choice A……

BiggieSmalls November 18, 2007 at 10:58 am

The Mets off season has been completely botched so far.

quit resting on your 2005 off season and get moving,

Omar better get on the ball quickly because his star is starting to dim.. you know what I’m saying?

RespectDaBestRM November 18, 2007 at 12:49 am

he’ll prob trade for benji molina or ramon hernandez

BSMITTYFDNY November 18, 2007 at 1:34 am

We dont have one player from Spain so Spaniard is not the proper term.

rich a November 18, 2007 at 8:16 am

Please show me how Omar is a bigot.

Because he signs Latin players? Give me a break, everyone does. Whether you like it or not, they are good at baseball and will continue to be targeted by EVERY gm, not just the Latin ones.

x-nady November 18, 2007 at 10:29 am

And I forgot about Sele, Brian Lawrence & Green.

RespectDaBestRM November 18, 2007 at 12:49 am

then sign castillo for 2nd and then sign livan or silva for the starting rotation

NYMetz6986 November 18, 2007 at 10:24 am

such a waste to trade away a prospect or 2 for one of those guys

RespectDaBestRM November 18, 2007 at 12:50 am

i dont have a problem with signing latin players, only if its the best option out there.
this year, torrealba wasnt at all the best option.

NYMBosco November 18, 2007 at 8:50 am

Please stop defending Omar. His over pursuit of latin players is obvious. Teams should have alot of latin players but not 90% of a roster! Give me a break, omar is blatenet with this and he proved it again with torrealba….

NYMBosco November 18, 2007 at 9:35 am

Wait and see what the percentage is this year after Omar signs latin players to replace Lo Duca, Glavine and Green and he trades Milledge, Pelfrey, Humber etc….

metinDC23 November 18, 2007 at 10:36 am

so you would whine if he trades milledge, pelfry, humber, etc for santana?
