MetsBlog-reader Matthew sent in the following email question…
“Hey Matt, would you be able to trace the draft pick that the Mets had to give up to sign Tom Glavine five years ago, and find out who Atlanta took with it? Also, have the Mets offered arbitration to Glavine and are the Mets assured the Braves pick this year?”
…the Mets signed glavine in Decemeber of 2002, and had to forfeit their second round selection, pick 43, to the Braves, with which they selected LHP Jo-Jo Reyes…
According to Baseball America, Reyes, who was 2-2 with a 6.22 ERA in 10 starts for the Braves last season, was ranked as the their eighth best prospect entering 2007.
…as far as the Mets this off-season, the Mets will get a draft pick from atlanta if the Braves and glvaine agree on a deal prior to December 1…if they do not reach a deal by then, the Mets will need to offer glavine salary arbitration prior to December 1 to recieve the Braves first round pick and a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds…if neither occurs, the Mets will not be awarded compensation…

minaya is already in the running for worst all time gm and if he doesnt get these picks from atlanta, then its confirmed.
I have news for u
Minaya is in the top 10 gms in baseball now and is one of the Mets best ever so I think u should shut up
He drafted
Reyes(He was in charge of drafting when drafted)
He traded for
Maine(benson for maine/julio, julio for el duque)(made 40% of rotation out of notin)
Perez(for Nady)
Signed
Beltran
Do you want me to go on????
If not for him no Beltran, Perez, Maine, Reyes, Chavez, Castro, Anderson!!!!!
To be fair, Reyes was an international signing.
At the end of the day, Minaya is quite similar to a lot of other mid-to-top GMs in baseball and there are only a few that are routinely gold year-in, year-out. Minaya’s ‘06 was stellar, and obviously his ‘07 was shaky. Same could be said for a guy like Beane, who, for all the moneyball praise, got very little in return for Hudson. Schurholtz who has made some questionable trades and signings the past two years, and even Theo the great, who was being beaten by Boston fans after ‘06 for trading for Crisp, giving away Arroyo for a 4th outfielder, giving a way a good middle reliever for a backup catcher whose only use is to receive Wakefield, rushing Craig Hansen because he failed to address the bullpen, and trading two top prospects for Beckett who looked very mediocre in ‘06. But hey, a lot changes in a year when you win despite your mistakes and one of your pitchers turns his career around again. If the Mets don’t sleepwalk through a majority of the ‘07 season, we could be singing a different tune as well.
Great post, costanza.
Omar better offer him arbitration, considering the state of available pitching, it would not be so horrible if he fooled everyone and accepts…that would be worse case, best case we get the draft picks….
Omar has to offer Tom Glavine arbitration. Glavine wants to go back to Atlanta. If he doesn’t offer him arbitration, then I will say the Mets are a badly run organization. Who cares about ‘courtesy’ thats ridiculous it would be a CHEAP move and it would suggest the Mets won’t want to pay for two draft eligible prospects
TWO draft picks including pick #18 for Tom Glavine? GOT TO DO IT. Glavine won’t accept until AFTER Dec. 1st and I’m sure the Mets have made a gentlemen’s agreement with him that they won’t impede him in his path to go to Atlanta.
Yeah, if the Mets do not affer him Arb. then i don’t know. What kind of organization makes such a stupid deal with a player to not offer to make the process easier? Tom Glavine is a selfish man who claims he wants to be by his family yet that did not matter whn the mets paid him in 2002 or whenever he came here and this is the braves the mets rival so they better get a pick braves would do it to them. I know prospects aren’t anything but prospects however this team needs some badly. If they don’t do this their in bad shape and omar should be fired.
Forget it gang…..no way the Mets impede Glavine’s trip back to ATL. There is no way the Braves would give up 2 picks for the 2008 version of Tom Glavine, a #4 pitcher at best!
Then as said before Omar should be fired cause that means he has no clue how to GM. You have to do best for the club. I mean the wrst that could happen is that Glavine accepts arb. and he pitches for the mets could be much worse.
If Glavine has a deal with the Braves, he isn’t accepting arbitration. Glavine is supposedly a “classy” guy and if he has a deal in place with Atlanta he isn’t going to accept arbitration. The Mets have to worry about their future and Glavine is no longer part of it.
We get two picks should Glavine sign with the Braves. It’s a no brainer.
and what will the Mets have to pay Glavine in arbitration – $13-15 million….no thanks, I don’t think T Glavine is worth $3 million let alone $15 million!
Omar should have been fired the day after his worthless squad dogged that final game.
Minaya has to get these picks. Atlanta will get their draft compensation from whoever signs Andruw Jones and Dotel. Offering arbitration shouldn’t be an impediment here.
I think MLB needs to rethink the whole draft compension plan. 41 year old Tom Glavine a Plan A free agent and the signing club has to offer 2 picks for this guy…..Maybe 2 picks for Andruw Jones, but no way Tom Glavine, please!
Chili, two draft picks for Glavine is a good parting gift. It enables us to draft FUTURE stars. You can’t let that go. And if Glavine comes back, then who cares. We need a pitcher anyway and we’ll have him for a year.
Also, Atlanta doesn’t lose two draft picks. They lose one. A first rounder. MLB allocates a sandwich pick between round 1 and 2 for us as bonus compensation.
Offering arbitration is a no brainer.
Consider this: IF Omar offers arbitration, and Glavine accepts the $10-12 million he would get via arbitration, AND ends up on the Mets paying him $13-15 million (buyout plus arbitration), will you guys all hate on Omar for getting fleeced for a #4 pitcher?
Theo didn’t trade for Beckett. They made that deal in the months that Theo wasn’t with the team.
