Theo didn't trade for Beckett. They made that deal in the months that Theo wasn't with the team.

Consider this: IF Omar offers arbitration, and Glavine accepts the $10-12 million he would get via arbitration, AND ends up on the Mets paying him $13-15 million (buyout plus arbitration), will you guys all hate on Omar for getting fleeced for a #4 pitcher?

Chili, two draft picks for Glavine is a good parting gift. It enables us to draft FUTURE stars. You can't let that go. And if Glavine comes back, then who cares. We need a pitcher anyway and we'll have him for a year.

Also, Atlanta doesn't lose two draft picks. They lose one. A first rounder. MLB allocates a sandwich pick between round 1 and 2 for us as bonus compensation.

Offering arbitration is a no brainer.

I think MLB needs to rethink the whole draft compension plan. 41 year old Tom Glavine a Plan A free agent and the signing club has to offer 2 picks for this guy.....Maybe 2 picks for Andruw Jones, but no way Tom Glavine, please!

To be fair, Reyes was an international signing.

At the end of the day, Minaya is quite similar to a lot of other mid-to-top GMs in baseball and there are only a few that are routinely gold year-in, year-out. Minaya's '06 was stellar, and obviously his '07 was shaky. Same could be said for a guy like Beane, who, for all the moneyball praise, got very little in return for Hudson. Schurholtz who has made some questionable trades and signings the past two years, and even Theo the great, who was being beaten by Boston fans after '06 for trading for Crisp, giving away Arroyo for a 4th outfielder, giving a way a good middle reliever for a backup catcher whose only use is to receive Wakefield, rushing Craig Hansen because he failed to address the bullpen, and trading two top prospects for Beckett who looked very mediocre in '06. But hey, a lot changes in a year when you win despite your mistakes and one of your pitchers turns his career around again. If the Mets don't sleepwalk through a majority of the '07 season, we could be singing a different tune as well.

If Glavine has a deal with the Braves, he isn't accepting arbitration. Glavine is supposedly a "classy" guy and if he has a deal in place with Atlanta he isn't going to accept arbitration. The Mets have to worry about their future and Glavine is no longer part of it.

We get two picks should Glavine sign with the Braves. It's a no brainer.

Minaya has to get these picks. Atlanta will get their draft compensation from whoever signs Andruw Jones and Dotel. Offering arbitration shouldn't be an impediment here.

Omar should have been fired the day after his worthless squad dogged that final game.
