According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, free-agent LHP Tom Glavine is close to signing a one-
year deal with the Braves.
Glavine declined a $13 million option with the Mets, in what many viewed as the first step in returning to Atlanta to pitch for the Braves and be closer to his family.
Multiple reports suggest that Atlanta’s initial offer is valued at $7 million, which Glavine and his agent countered late last night.
…plus, when you consider the $3 million he got from the Mets when they bought out his contract, if glavine’s counter is, say, $8 million or so, he may come out fairly close to the $13 million he declined from the Mets…plus, he returns to his favorite team, gets to pitch with his best friend, John Smoltz, and be with his family…not a bad deal…
In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel writes that, ‘out of courtesy,’ Glavine is expected to allow the Mets time to ‘match or exceed’ Atlanta’s final offer.
Glavine’s agent has told reporters that he will make a final decision by the winter meetings, which begin Dec. 3.
…umm, tommy, if you really wanna be courteous, could you make that agreement with atlanta before December 1, this way the Mets can snag a first-round draft pick from the Braves…
…of course, if he waits, and the Mets offer him arbitration, and he signs with the Braves, they still get a pick, but it’s just much cleaner the other way…

good let him go….sick of his 4.45 ERA In the NL
::sigh::
better him starting all season than say Jose Lima, Brian Lawrence right….
I’m happy for Glavine. I have no ill-will feelings towards him. As Matthew said… he is signing for $13mil, going back to ATL and back with his family. Not bad for a vetaran pitcher. Glavine provided us some good times and bad times, but at the end of the day, we all know where he really belongs in a Braves uniform.
So long Tommy it was a serviceable ride…
Your sensible responses are not welcome in these parts.
do we get atlantas 1st round pick now???
not gonna happen….
Last game of the year. Atlanta enters the day tied for the NL Wild Card. John Smoltz has just guided the team through a 1 hit gem the day before to get to this scenario. Win and Atlanta will have a chance to fight for their postseason lives. Lose and it most likely is all over. The rival Mets are in town to knock the Braves out of the playoff hunt, fresh off clinching their own NL East title.
For all intents and purposes, the game was over quickly as Glavine was tagged for 7 ER in 1/3 of an inning by his former team. The Mets go on to rout the Braves 11-2 behind a dynamic performance by future Cy Young Award winner Oliver Perez. Tom can now end his career like Roger Clemens did, walking off the mound way too early in a must-win game. Still going to Cooperstown, but not going to the postseason.
I hope this bitterness is out of my mouth by April. Never really embraced Glavine. Always seemed to have his eye elsewhere. But we will find a way. In Omar We Trust!
Just our luck, He throws a shut out and Willie ends up getting fired. Beltran gets called out looking with the bases loaded in the ninth. Now that’s a Willie finish I don’t want to see.
Is it clear that the Mets will offer him arbitration if he has not signed by December 1st? Management has bent over backwards for him in the past. Let’s hope that does not happen this time.
In a world where you could actually trade players for picks, is there anyone alive who would not trade this fossil for the 18th pick in the draft?
My assumption is they sign him before the arbitration deadline we automatically get the pick. That’s why teams like to wait and hope the former team does not off, so they lose nothing. Somehow the Braves are willing to give up the pick…we’ll take it!
I know all of the family-types applaud this move, but its another signal that Tom Glavine is not a winner. The Mets give him far better chance to win than the Braves, but he just wants to collect his paycheck and chill with his family. Exactly the type of guy who derailed the 2007 Mets (also see Delgado, Carlos). I want hungry winners, not candidates for articles in Parent & Child. So good riddance.
Let me be the first to remind you, dave27, that Mr Delgado had an off year last year. Let me also say, that the previous season, Mr Delgado in his first post-season carried the NY Mets offense….look it up pal!
Good luck Tom. You gave us your best most of the time.
is anyone else nervous to face a rotation of smoltz, hudson, hampton, glavine, james? cause i am scared to death.
these mets should hammer glavine every time we face him. it would make me sick to see him throw 7 scoreless or something. james sucks and who the hell knows what hampton can do anymore
If the Mets get the picks for Glavine, I think they can feel safer sending prospects in trades. They could possibly even get supplemental picks for Shawn Green, Luis Castillo, or Paul LoDuca, although they probably won’t sign soon enough, or be offered arbitration. If these moves were possible, I would:
Sign Jose Guillen (type B free agent) for RF.
Send Milledge, Pelfrey, Mulvey to Oakland for Danny Haren
Send Carlos Gomez and a B-Level guy to Minnesota for Matt Garza.
Resign Luis Castillo
Sign one of the following for the pen (depending on asking price): Affeldt, Dotel, Kerry Wood
ss Reyes
2b Castillo
3b Wright
cf Beltran
lf Alou
1b Delgado
rf Guillen
c Torrealba
P Pedro, Haren, Perez, Maine, Garza
rp Wanger, Heilman, Duque, Feliciano, and new signing are in.
Sosa, Padilla, Smith, Mota, Schoenweis, Duaner, and the others fight for the final spots.
You would still have Marlon, Casto, Endy, Easley, Gotay for the bench.
The 2 first round picks, and 1 or 2 supplemental picks could quickly help to replenish the minors along with Fernando Martinez, Guerra, the minor league relievers, and whoever else blossoms this year.
Minimal money would be spent, allowing money to be ready for any free agent starters next year, and a free agent 1b or OF next year.
I can’t change my tune now. I was against the Glavine signing right from the get go. How many of you remember that John Schuerholz leaked the information that Glavine came to him after he signed with the Mets and tried to renege on the deal? That caused some hard feelings on Galvine’s part. But how about Met fans? Our team just signed a player who really didn’t want to be in New York. That soured my taste for Galvine during his tenure here.
I’m sure Glavine is a great guy but I am pleased he is going back tot he Braves. I hope we pummel him at least four times next year.
They better offer him arbitration.
No way no way no way do the Mets get anything from the Braves regarding Glavine!
Chili… the goodwill agreement was made for last year when the mets wanted him back. In the end, they provided the courtesy to him and he chose to return to us (bc the braves made no offer).
Now, any deal for last year is off the table. While no one has confirmed it from the METs side, there has not once been any speculation that they will not offer the arbitration tag.
Especially given the sparcity of both a strong farm system and limited free agent options on pitching, the Mets are certain to offer the tag.
Under the worse conditions, he comes back to us and accepts arbitration. Under expected conditions, the Braves think he is a difference maker regardless for them and sign him knowing the pick is going back to us.
This is a lock my friend… Mets get the 18th pick in the draft and our own 22nd as we are not getting any FA that would steal that pick this year.
it sucks he’s going back to atlanta, i’ll certainly boo him as a brave, but i guess a nice way to end his career.
needless to say he’ll prboably get killed at shea haha
Glavines a decent pitcher, he gave the mets a bunch of innings this year and put up a subpar ERA. At this point in his career he’s not worth the 12+ million a year that comes along with getting him for a season. The Mets need to start throwing some of their young guns even if they go through some tough times aka Pelfrey/Humber.
