Buzz: Glavine Could Finalize Deal Today

by Matthew Cerrone

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, citing the player’s agent, Tom Glavine could finalize a one-year, $8 million contract with the Braves as early as today.

…i once went out with a girl, who, after we broke up, went back to her ex-boyfriend, with whom she had dated for five years or so before i met her…while together, we had a fun, but awkward relationship, and it never really felt right…this triangle with the Mets, Braves and glavine feels like the same thingi mean, i’m happy for glavine, as a person, but, now i can’t help but feel like he never really wanted to be in new york…

I hate Tom Glavine.

Ferragamo November 18, 2007 at 10:28 am

Great analogy Cerrone about the ex-girlfriend, sounds very familiar.

Well I think we all knew that Glavine’s heart was always in Atlanta, even after his time in NY. I know Glavine did win some big games for us, but the way the season ended and his affection for ATL, leaves a very bad taste in this Mets fans mouth.

jimyager November 18, 2007 at 12:29 pm

He played us like a flute. He used us as to get a contract from the Braves and when they did not give it to him he signed with the Mets. Then we hear that he thought he made a mistake and he wanted to go back with the Braves. Then he turns down his option in 06 and waits for the Braves and, reluctantly comes back to the Mets now he does the same thing again in 07. He is a bum and hes done. He cries like a baby and is married to the Braves. I have never heard any other ball player cry as much about family as he does. All players move around from team to team, thats the life of a ball player. Why does he think hes so special? He will go down in Mets history as a big zero. He will always be remembered as the pitcher that blew the biggest games of 2007 in the first inning. He has become another trivia question answer, thats all. He will be remembered with Benitez and Vaughn in the same breath. He has a loosing record in the first 3 years here and when he started to get a winning record he ran back to the Braves. SO LONG TOM. We will see you at Shea in 2008 and we will all remind you of your time in NY and it will be loud. This guy will hear the BOO BIRDS like Barry Bonds.

he just wanted money. when he got it, he cried about missing his family. he hinted at going back last year then came back here when they rebuffed him. glavine was a bum before he came here, a bum while he stayed here, and will be a bum in Atlanta this year. I don’t wish bums the best

My guess is he goes back to his former girlfriend here in the Braves and realizes the supermodel he used to go out with now has a tire around her midsection and was hiding cellulite on her backside with tight jeans. He throws up when he discovers it and decides to leave her also

NYAmazinMets November 18, 2007 at 10:02 am

At least he’s having the decency to sign before December first netting us Atlanta’s 1st round pick 18th overall and and supplemental pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds.

dwright5jreyes7 November 18, 2007 at 10:03 am

are we going to offer arbitration? get that pick omar!

F Glavine. The phoniest of the phoniest of the phonies. Goodbye and good riddance.

davethenjmetsfan November 18, 2007 at 10:36 am

I agree. Hope he goes 5-12 and blows the final game for the Braves next year, eliminating them from contention. He’s telling the Mets fans to go screw, and the feeling’s mutual.

metsjam November 18, 2007 at 11:51 am

I hope the Braves are out of contention long before the final game.

metsnfinsfan November 18, 2007 at 10:08 am

Cerrone that is nuts.
When David Cone came back here did that mean he never wanted to play for the Yankees?
Clemens never wanted to play for the Astros?

hogwash

KFS November 18, 2007 at 10:12 am

Well, for one, those two didn’t regret it and call Phillips and Cashman right after signing with the Yankees and Astros.

metsfan227 November 18, 2007 at 11:14 am

What? Bad analogy on your part. David Cone played for mutliple teams over his career, as did Clemens. Tom Glavine has ONLY played for the Braves and the Mets.

Is Kerry Wood an option for the bullpen? I hear Theo is interested:

Well, he kind of proved it 5 million times!

I also considrer a fair trade. Effectively, the Mets traded an aging #5 starter, and received 2 nice draft picks (#18 plus a sandwich, hello David Wright!), along with dumping 13 million in salary.

I think that helps the team LT much more than he would help this year.

easycroc November 18, 2007 at 10:39 am

Gee’does anybody know what college players might be available for the 18th pick in the 2008 draft?

stc85 November 18, 2007 at 10:22 am

as long as we get the 18th pick, I’m happy.

professor met November 18, 2007 at 10:30 am

I hope the Braves give him the clap.

christian warrior November 18, 2007 at 10:33 am

He already had the clap.

RobInWisconsin November 18, 2007 at 10:32 am

Yeah, well, Glavine did give us some very solid starts the last couple of years, but you never really knew which Glavine would take the hill. And that last start; oy. And those postgame comments; oy part II. I find myself not feeling much of anything about Glavine. I don’t really care one way or another. Frankly, I’d rather see the Mets go harder after Castillo, and be glad the get the draft picks from Glavine. I am surprised that the Braves would surrender the picks so easily. Why not wait until after the deadline and force the Mets hand, unless the Braves are making amends with Glavine.

Can you imagine the response Glavine will get from the fans when he comes back this year?

christian warrior November 18, 2007 at 10:32 am

Considering that I never wanted Glavine here in the first place, this is a good day. I would have welcomed Glavine leaving even if we were to get nothing in the way of draft picks.

It’s funny that there are so many of you on here now with your “F Glavine” posts, because so many of you argued with me over the past few years when I said that Glavine was not and never would be a Met. I don’t see any of those posts now.

Good riddance to Glavine. Let somebody else worry about what Ump is calling the balls and strikes on the days Tommy pitches.

cver November 18, 2007 at 10:45 am

Matthew, thank you for sharing that poignant personal story of yours. Yes, it is a good analogy and I can see how you might have been, somewhere in the back of your mind, thinking of this ex-girlfriend sometimes as the “Glavine saga” emerged. One side of me gets sick thinking about Glavine and also the business side of baseball. The other aspect is that certainly I and others, as Met fans, were so happy when Tom Seaver finally came back to us. OK, the other teams Seaver played for were hardly rivals of ours on the level of the Braves, but otherwise, I’ll just look at it that way. Good riddance to Tom Glavine, who could never hold Tom Seaver’s jock as far as a pitcher or as far as class in my opinion.

ugbmets21 November 18, 2007 at 10:51 am

so here is the thing. i went to spring training the year we signed him. i was 16 at the time. i got a lot of autographs that year. but the one person who did not have time to sign was glavine. he told me he would be right back after icing his arm. he is a JOKE. i went to opening day where the mets lost by like 15 and he was pitching. it was cold and raining. i never liked him. hated watching him in orange and blue.

metsman69 November 18, 2007 at 11:05 am

After pitching the most disastrous, gutless, un-clutch start in Mets franchise history – not to mention his ERA in the stretch drive last 3 starts at something like 12 – , I pray that Tommy signs a deal with the Braves today and is gone from this ballclub forever.

he was never a met, and he left as the ultimate Mr. Choke. Great legacy.

Buh bye tommy.

boozermetsfanver1 November 18, 2007 at 1:39 pm

was your first and last date God awful catastrophies?

Did you continuosly get the sense that she wanted back with the old boyfriend?

Can we get the waverunners back?

metschamps November 18, 2007 at 2:13 pm

Oh God, this response was hilarious!!! I guess the only thing I could add was after the catastrophic last date, did the ex-girlfriend announce to all of your friends that the relationshisp was never a big deal and she wasn’t the least bit upset about the break up? LOL !!!
