During his weekly appearance on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney said the Twins have not yet begun shopping Johan Santana.
According to Olney, while some executives believe the Twins will turn to the trade market if Santana cannot be re-signed, others, instead, believe Minnesota will hold on to him for opening day.
On the other hand, during his weekly appearance on WFAN in New York, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said, from what he understands, the Twins are already discussing Santana with other teams.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, citing ‘the word in baseball circles,’ the Twins have made a five-year, $93 million offer to LHP Johan Santana.
…as i said yesterday, that’s essentially the same deal that Carlos Zambrano agreed to with the Cubs…it’s also the same $18 million per year that was accepted by Barry Zito…the question is, does he want more than five years, does he think he can get more per year on the open market, and does he just flat-out want to leave Minnesota…
Regardless, Olney says Omar Minaya has been telling teams he intends to trade for a front-line starting pitcher.
However, given the above information about Santana, Olney believes A’s RHP Dan Haren will be Minaya’s second choice, though his team’s ‘weak prospects’ will make any acquisition quite difficult to pull off.
…for the Mets to have a chance at trading for santana, they have to hope that other teams, with more talent to trade, panic in fear of giving a great package only to watch santana leave on the open market after next season…what’s more, the Dodgers, who have a ton of talent, seem to be seeking a bat, not a pitcher; the Angels, despite talking a big game, never pull the trigger on a big deal, plus they also need a bat; and the Yankees seem to have zero interest in trading Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain…so, if that group is not serious, who besides the Mets is left that will overpay in talent, knowing they are totally capable of re-signing santana to the type of long-term deal he is seeking…
By the way, instead of appearing on ESPN 1050 as he had been doing, Heyman will now join WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog program twice a week throughout the year.

Does any sane person seriously think that if Santana goes on the market, the Yankees will not give up one of their 3 young guys for a top of the rotation pitcher? That instead they will start the season with a 200+M dollar payroll and a starting rotation of Wong, Mussina Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy. That is beyond naive.
The only good thing is that i was reading a recent report that the Yankees farm system beyond those three arms is totally overblown, that they have almost no desirable position players including the CFer that gets alot of buzz.
Who…”Tabada?” The only reason I know the name is because Mike Francesa loves to say his name over and over again when discussing trades. I think this makes him feel smart because he can name one Yankee prospect still in the minors.
I have heard Francesa say this name about 500 times in the past two weeks.
Tabata is a Melky Cabrera clone.
That’s tha guy. I drew a blank.
Right, and thats the whole key. The Twins are flush with pitching prospects, but are dry when it comes to position players. The package Minny would want from the Yankers would center on Cano, with Tabada, and one of the other pitching prospects thrown in.
I want Haren over Santana.
I think it takes similar pieces to get Haren, which we don’t have.
I’ll be happy with Blanton and Garza coming to the Mets and signing a RF since Milledge will have been traded.
blanton #’s were really good last year. in fact tehre just as good as harens. he just doesnt get a lot of press. Omar, if your listening, please get blanton.
Please get Blanton. Please make Joe Blanton your #1 pitching priority. That sounds like a great idea.
Dan Haren: 15-9, 3.07 ERA, 192 Ks
Joe Blanton: 14-10, 3.95 ERA, 140 Ks
Just as good.
I want Garza more than Santana. Garza can be had for fewer prospects. That deal could possibly retain enough prospects that we can go after another pitcher, or a catcher with a Omar type throw-in Jacket project pitcher.
If we get Santana, I think I’d rather it be through FA signing next year.
I agree 100%
I am really starting to get nervous. We all thought last year Omar was going to make some big move and nothing happened. He ended up trading for guys that ended up in the minors or his trades were a bust. So far he has done practically nothing. He tried to sign a mediocre (and broken) catcher. Had the chance for Eckstein (who could have spotted Reyes for resting purposes) and gave four years to a broken down second baseman. Omar is starting to lose his luster.
Why the the switch from Kay to the Fan for Heyman?
Because Kay made him puke everytime they spoke. I cannot listen to 1050…it’s horrible.
Is getting the Braves #1 this year a done deal considering the Glavine signing? With two late #1’s that could be another chip in making a deal.
yes, assuming the Glavine contract doesn’t fall apart too (I think it was reported as pending physical0.
Unlike football though, you can’t trade the draft pick. it does, however, give them the flexibility to trade some more lower level prospects, since they will be getting more back (hopefully) to replenish the stock.
Santana is going to replace A Rod as the big tease that is never going to happen.
the dbacks have a low payroll and big time prospects, wouldnt be surprised if they made a run at him.
The Angels never pull the trigger on big deals? They always talk a big game?
Well at least the Mets are the only ones…
