Buzz: Outfielder for Gerald Laird
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 19, 2007 1:12 pm

According to the always-reliable Jamey Newberg, at the Newberg Report, ‘there are rumors gaining steam in Texas’ that suggest the Red Sox could look to trade OF Coco Crisp to the Rangers for C Gerald Laird.

…if this is the cost for laird, it’s safe to assume texas will look to get at least Lastings Milledge or Carlos Gomez from the Mets, which, i hope, is something Omar Minaya has no interest in entertaining…

Crisp, 28, is due to earn $10.5 million through 2009, with a club option for 2010, after which he can be a free agent.

In 120 games for Texas last season, the 28–year-old Laird hit .224 with nine HR and 103 strike outs, while throwing out 39 percent of runners attempting to steal against him.

i sincerely hope that a 23 yr old lastings milledge is more valuable than a 28 yr old light hitting CFer that will make about 10 million more than milledge, and wasnt good enough to start for the team towards the end of the playoffs.

    • will says:

I agree. I dont think I would trade either Milledge or Gomez for Crisp. Its an easy call when considering the financial aspects as well as youth and upside.

I wouldnt trade either one for Laird.

But this makes tons of sense for the Sox. Clear some salary, clear CF for Ellsbury, hedge v injury to Varitek. When you are the best team in baseball this is the type of move you can afford to make. Though Laird is tempting, The Mets on the other hand are best served by using the available chips to get pitching and then see whats left with which to acquire a Catcher.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i agree completely its a great move for boston. but why the heck would texas want crisp with that price tag. i mean texas cant seem to get out of its own way.

    • dk70 says:

IF Omar trades either one of these guys for this bum, then I quit

  2. dontstopbelieving says:

Well, I don’t know — from the Sox’ perspective this is a pure salary dump. They’ve got Ellsbury, who can play center and hit just as well if not better than Crisp, and at a fraction of the price. Milledge is young and cheap. I don’t know what the Rangers are looking for, and they obviously have a history of taking on monster contracts, but it seems to me that Crisp’s big contract makes him a more of a liability than Lastings.

  3. napes22 says:

Is anyone else with in me saying “come on, it’s Gerald Laird.”

    • professor met says:

      Me, me! Depressing.

    • Nails says:

Yes … if we were to sacrifice a young highly touted prospect for a .224 catcher to play half (?) the games at C with Castro, I will vomit many times.

    • Magooley says:

Absolutely! Gerald Laird?? Can someone explain to me why this guy is considered remotely valuable? He’s a weak hitting catcher with a pretty good arm. I don’t want any part of this guy — especialy at a premium price.

I was this guy in college. Only I could actually hit a curve ball. Looks like I should have chosen MLB instead of advertising…

      I second the notion:

      “Come on, it’s Gerald Laird.”

      • napes22 says:

Actually, would signing Magooley cause us to give up a draft pick? If not, welcome aboard!

        • Magooley says:

Ha! Yes! LOL. I’d be honored. Our problems are solved. See it’s all about out-of-the-box thinking.

Nah, a 42-year-old catcher with cranky knees and arthritis in his throwing shoulder is definitely someone to stay away from. Even I wouldn’t sign me. Then again, I always did look good in orange and blue…and I wouldn’t have let Mota shake me off!

      • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Laird is basically a younger DeFeliz.

Matt says a lot of totally inexplicable things, but this tops the list. Is he equating a horrifically overpaid and offensively inept center fielder with Lastings Milledge?

Did Matt get out of the wrong end of the stupid filter today?

  4. zen says:

save the prospects for pitching. period.

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if we trade lastings milledge for a platoon catcher it would have the potential for being even worse than the kazmir deal.

    • Old Backstop says:

Can a trade possibly be worse than Scott Kazmir, young left-handed power pitcher and ace for an mediocre, injured converted starter with massive control problems?

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

well if kazmir has injury problems and fizzles then yea i think it would be worse bc assuming milledge becomes a 25-30 HR type guy with great speed and athletic ability in the OF, i think that would be worse considering we’d be getting back a backup-platoon calibar catcher.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

either way both trades are the type that are linked to a GM losing their job in my opinion.

      • Kalihan42 says:

        It’s called Jaun Samuel….

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Nothing can be worse than the Kazmir deal. All star pitcher for 5 poorly pitched starts. But it would be close.

  6. 7-train says:

Milledge or Gomez is a lot to give up for a purely defensive catcher.

I’ve long wanted to see how we’d do with a defensive specialist behind the plate who could gun runners down, but that’s a lot to give. Maybe if they’d take Ben Johnson and a 2nd tier pitching prospect.

I hate giving up a slot in the BA in the NL for a guy who hits .225. But if you have a catcher with a gun who can keep runners on first then you up the double play opportunities for our infield. We’ve got a strong infield.

  7. wynton says:

Are catchers really this scarce? I would rather settle for an anonymous retread, ala DeFelice, and use him to backup Castro, rather than overpay for a mediocre catcher.

  8. extrawhitemeat says:

They should be able to get may more for Crisp then that…

and come on Cerrone.. it’s “except” not “accept”!

  9. stickguy says:

Crisp stinks, and he is wildly overpaid.

    Trade them Ben Johnson instead!

  10. Ric says:

Geez, LoDuca must have gotten with one of the Wilpon’s female relatives for them STILL not signing him after all this catcher madness.

  11. hot stove chef says:

I think the most important thing to take notice of in this trade is that both players discussed (Laird and Crisp) are tradeable assets BECAUSE their respective teams have young major league ready talent competing for time.

The same can be said for the Cabrera trade.

Where are our young guys pushing veterans for positions?

Unless they can get a difference makes (read: Top of the rotation starter) The Mets should hold onto their players so they can be in the same position in future years.

    • stickguy says:

good point I was just thinking about when I was reading the Garland thread.

The mets just don’t have any excess ML guys. That is, a legit player that is blocking a great prospect.

Unless you consider Milledge a ML vet now, but there still isn’t anyone pushing him!

So, any deal that requires ML ready players they can’t do.

Now, if you had a nady blocking Milledge, or if their top prospect was a 1B pushing delgado out, then you would have real players (not prospects) to trade.

I still would trade Delgado though. Can’t be too hard to find a 1B!

I agree that hoarding the prospects this year and letting them blossom makes smoe sense. Try to trade for a mid tier SP, and run with the in house options beyond that.

Make a deadline deal if it become neccessary.

Man, garza for Gomez + a “B” guy would solve a lot of problems without creating any new ones!

      • will says:

The Mets got great value for Nady.

        • Danny1986 says:

It’s hard to disagree, b/c Oliver Perez has been a clear surprise. But we cannot underestimate the value of Xavier Nady, either. The guy is clearly the best player on PITT, and is a phenomenal right handed clutch hitter. He was 5th in MLB in BA with 2 outs RISP last year, and would have been a remedy to the Mets horrible clutch hitting throughout 2007.

I honestly think the the best this lineup has looked over the past 3 years was with Xavier Nady batting 6th and protecting our big 3-5 bats. I’d go as far as to say that this entire team has not looked as good from the moment he was traded.

The Mets obviously had to make that deal considering the situation, but I seriously look at that Duanar Sanchez injury occuring late summer 2006 as being a tipping point putting many other things in motion that has resulted in the recent angst amongst Mets fans.

  12. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

it sucks bc paul lo duca is probably the only free agent in the pas 7 years, and probably onward for a couple of seasons that would take a discount to play here. everyone else we need to overpay for.

  13. loopenark says:

Ben Johnson and Guillermo Mota for Laird.

  14. ScottN says:

I would rather continue with stopgaps at catcher than make this deal. Barrett, or, hell, Piazza to split time with Castro for a year. If we want a good defensive catcher with not much bat, we have it, his name is Mike DeFelice. Pitchers seem to love throwing to him, as well as Castro, so why not?

Unfortunately, LoDuca is our best bet, but he’s got a lot of pride, so I’m not sure if he’ll come back, unless he can’t get another deal somewhere else.

    • Achilles400 says:

LoDuca has no pride. He begged for a contract the entire season.

      • ScottN says:

He’s got pride–no reason for him not to beg during the season–he wanted to remain a Met and lock his career in place. But now he’s been openly spurned. I have serious doubts whether he’ll come back to this organization now.

  15. Achilles400 says:

Can we even begin to appreciate how good we had it between Hundley and Piazza?

  16. napes22 says:

I’m still annoyed we didn’t protect Jesus Flores. The Mets liked him but viewed other players as more valuable. Catcher is such a thin position, when it comes to Rule V, you can’t take these chances.

  17. General Millz says:

    No thanks.

  18. Ken Dynamo says:

coco crisp and milledge or gomez arent comparable becasue crisp is a tenured player making 10mil while gomez and milledge are cheap and under club control for several years still. carlos delgado is closer to coco crsip’s value than either a milledge or gomez.

  19. HoJo52 says:

If Boston aquires Laird, I would make a push for Doug Mirabelli. I know he’s old and he was hurt, but IMO it sounds a lot better then alot of the other options. One or two year deal max to platoon with Castro, time well bought to find a suitable catcher for the future.

  20. Danny1986 says:

this reminds me of the time when the White Sox had the nerve to ask for David Cone for Ron Karovice.

Why at times do mediocre catchers require a price of top talent? It is mindboggling to me.

  21. DMAT89 says:

yea..id only trade millege/gomez to them if we got salty back!

  22. roman411 says:

I hear Todd Pratt and Jason Phillips are available.

How about one of the 20 Flying/Catching Mollina Brothers?

I hear Javy Lopez is looking for a job.

    In all seriousness…

Anyone thing the Phils would be willing to part with Jason Jaramillo? Or the Cards with their C prospect Anderson?

  23. gregf1106 says:

Maybe Caleb Stewart and some other prospect but not either thrilladge or gomez

  24. gipper913 says:

This is just more proof the Mets FO needs to swallow their pride and resign Loduca. he is the best of limited options. Just give Castro more startes than the last couple of years to spell dookie,

Then, we can concentrate on SP issues.

  25. zod says:

This situation is so sad and completely self-inflicted. The Mets *always* had a nice pipeline of catchers who were at least average and sometimes better…Hundley, Piazza, Kelly Stinnett, Brent Mayne, Todd Pratt, Vance Wilson, Jason Phillips, Ramon Castro…heck even the no-hit Alberto Castillo. Jesus Flores was ready to be next in line to be brought up at the end of this year for a cup of coffee and maybe get 250 ABs as a backup in 2008.

Where are the Mets pipeline of average players to plug holes when the free agent market is terrible? Fact is, our minor league depth is pretty bad except for our handful of OF prospects.

  26. 4JoeOrsulak says:

BTW, Blastings Thrilledge has a nice article on how stupid the Castillo signing was. His words “waste of money”

Couldn’t have put it better myself.

  27. the_other_matt says:

when Louis goes on the DL in may, Gotay will come in and hit .378 with 14 HRs. Then in August, he’ll sit when Louis returns and drag-bunts the Mets out of contention.
