Buzz: Pitching David Wells to Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 19, 2007 3:07 pm

In a column for the New York Post about Tom Glavine leaving New York, Mark Hale writes…

David Wells is one name that is expected to be pitched to the Mets…Wells is considering retirement, but the Mets are among the teams for which he would consider pitching.”

In 29 starts for the Padres and Dodgers last season, the 44–year-old Wells was 9–9 with a 5.44 ERA, during which opponents hit .290 against him.

to me, wells is the type of guy a team should turn to only if all else fails…in short, if wells ends up on my team, it means so many other ideas went horribly wrong

He’s plan Q in my book.

    • jdon says:

I have this grisly vision: the first team he faces lays down 6 straight bunts. David is carried off the field on a stretcher. A very big stretcher, manned by 4 burly men.

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

if he joins the team, the average age of the team might go down.

  2. squad says:

    Uh, no thanks.

  3. tfc3rid says:

So, in other words, we’re going to end up with David Wells…

  4. MacD81 says:

    Worst. Idea. Ever.

–Well, maybe not ever, but you know what I mean.

    • ridethesnake says:

It certainly would be, but I doubt Omar is giving it a second’s thought, especially if Wells pitch to him is anything like his actual pitching lately.

  5. davethenjmetsfan says:

C’mon, his quirkiness alone would endear him to the city! I always wanted him to pitch for us, even if he starts 5 games, winning 3, then his arm falls off. Who’s with me!!??

  6. professor met says:

I just puked in my mouth a little bit.

  7. Pedro
    Perez
    Maine
    El Duque??
    ??

I’d rather see the Mets sign a guy like Carlos Silva for the fourth spot and see what Pelfrey can do, just because the age of the staff would be just too old.

  8. BaltimoreMets says:

We might as well go with Kaz Ishii.

    • Mister Koo says:

Ugh, I don’t know which one is worse. At least Wells doesn’t walk anybody. All the runs he gives up are earned by the other team with their bats. Ishii would walk the bases loaded out of fear of throwing a strike and would groove one for a grand slam. Result: 4 runs on 1 hit.

  9. magic00700magic says:

As I have stated before, I think we should stand pat pitchers wise unless some one worthwhile become available.

I think our blue chip prosects will be worth a lot more once given time to grow.

Pedro-Maine-Perez-Pelfrey. Get a LIVAN and call it a day. Trade midseason if we need someone.

Lets sign Lo Duca. He is best choice out there.

I asked Matt to place a poll to see what everyone thinks, but he prefers to place a poll about Glavine and draft pics (AFTER Glavine already signed with the Braves). Not certain I understand the value of that poll. Perhaps that just me.

Anyway, our team is still cream of the crop. Let the deals come to us, not vice versa.

    • MacD81 says:

Right, because standing pat did the team a lot of good last season. I agree with your thinking in not rushing to trade the young guys for just anyone, but I don’t think the FO should be lulled into going into the season with the same team as last year sans Glavine. In fairness though, I’m not sure what changes are realistic or possible at this point.

    • Mister Koo says:

Standing pat with the players might have been OK if the manager was replaced. Since he wasn’t, something should be done to shake up the 2007 disaster. With this market, it isn’t going to be easy.

    • ridethesnake says:

I’m not so sure taking the same team that collapsed in September and replacing Glavine with Livan and letting Green depart as your only changes is the right direction.

  10. accent on HORRIBLY

  11. metsdude13 says:

He shouldn’t be an option no matter what. The Mets have 7-8 pitchers who are better and/or don’t come with as much bagagge as Wells.

I’d rather see David Bell pitch.

  12. Coleslaw Kennel says:

“in short, if wells ends up on my team, it means so many other ideas went horribly wrong”

I remember you said essentially the same thing about Ricky Ledee last spring, and he got some playing time with us, so let’s hope that history doesn’t repeat itself :)

  13. CaseStreet says:

I’m in, only if we give Wells $10 million per start and he doesn’t have to travel to home or away games. Actually, we should just pay him to be on the team but not play.

  14. njguy7676 says:

Would rather coax Anthony Young out of retirement

  15. moonshotoffthescoreboard says:

Free the Fatties, I want the David Wells and Livan Hernandez.

We’ll call them the Fat Boys… I’m going to dig up my shell top addidas with fat laces right now!…. where’d I put my Cazals…

It will be great, when ever they give up a run we can eat a hotdog… We’ll be broke by the 4th inning.

  16. HoJo52 says:

Is he interested in Mota’s or Shoenweis’s job… A guy, rather large guy at that, with his fire could help in the pen. I like his character, well maybe his fire more then his character at times, if he were interested in a role in the pen I think it should be considered, even if only for Sele’s job if it were not given to Humber or another prospect trying to break into the rotation. As a starter though, it would have to be a pass, unless as stated things have gone very very wrong.

  17. loopenark says:

    Omar isn’t that stupid.

  18. the clap says:

Pelfrey and Humber are former blue chip prospects at current blue light special values. Maybe they turn out to be duds, but it’s far too early for the Mets to value them that way when other teams are doing so.

Humber had a pretty good season for a PCL pitcher getting his first full year in after TJ surgery, and he got better as the year went along. Pelfrey has been tossed about on the AAA-MLB shuttle, and that inconsistency in locale and playing time is the last thing a recent draftee needs. Plus, Peterson’s doing 10 minute fix jobs on his game to make him a non-fastball groundball pitcher.

Unlike 99% of people, I’d rate Humber ahead of Pelfrey now, only because he’s had less time with Rick Peterson to have his head and game totally screwed backwards. It’s not too late to get Mazzone here. Mazzone’s no miracle worker, but he’s closer to it than Peterson, and I don’t think Humber/Pelfrey rate as miracle jobs anyway.
