News: Mets Conf. Call to Announce Castillo
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 19, 2007 5:37 pm

The Mets have scheduled a 6 pm conference call to announce the signing of free-agent 2B Luis Castillo.

…also, for the first time, i will be on the call…i don’t know if i’m able to ask questions, or just listen, but i’m pretty excited either way…

Update6:09 pm

During a conference call with reporters a few moments ago, Mets GM Omar Minaya announced that the Mets have re-signed Castillo to a  four-year deal.

Castillo said he is happy to be back with the Mets, and intends to do everything he can to help the Mets win next year.  He is disappointed with the way last season ended, and believes the Mets have a great chance to win next season.  Castillo had surgery done to clean out his right knee at the end of the season, and expects to be 100 percent by spring training.

Update6:13 pm

Minaya said that, once he got clearance from the doctor, he had no concerns regarding Castillo’s knees.

According to the player’s agent, Castillo only felt pain from the scar tissue in his knee, which was cleaned out during the surgery.

Maybe this signing is for the best. I like Eckstein but not for more money than we paid Castillo. Enough with this distraction…

Lets get ourselves a catcher before the winter meetings. Maybe we should just get a platoon catcher fo Castro. I would not trade unless a deal nets us a quality arm as well, which seems more fantasy than possibility. We are talking the 8 hole anyway. I think we can sacrafice the catcher position if it frees up our chips to get a quality starter. Should we make a move on Kendall. ISn’t he available? Not ideal, but if we are talking split time with Catro this would not devestate the team. Since LoDuca is unlikely to return it might be a decent plan B so we can get our focus back to pitching for the winter meetings.

Maybe we should consider trading Maine along with some of our chips (Quality minor leaguers Milledge and company) to get the ace we need from the short list of Ace caliber people we ahve already discussed on this site.. We can always replace Maine with a guy like Silva who’s performance over the next 4 years might not be all that much different than Maine assuming Maine goes through cold spells like he did at the end of this season, throughout his career.

Sign amid grade mid releiver or 2 and call us prepared for next year.

    Go ahead everyone…trash the plan.

      consider it trashed.

If they have to trade a Maine to get a Santana (signed and sealed?), they have to consider it. It’s certainly quite a hit, but Maine, though a good pitcher, will not be Santana, and it might be the only way the Mets can compete with teams with better systems. Sorry, folks.

For their part, though, if I’m the Twins (or virtually any AL team), I’m wary of taking on a flyball pitcher like Maine.

      • Andrew says:

No way you trade Maine. The Mets need depth in the rotation, not to trade a starter for another starter.

    • zen says:

adding an ace would be a great development. you definately need to give up something good to receive an ace on santana’s level.

that being said, it kinda defeats the purpose to trade away a young, successful pitcher (maine) who is under a cheap contract for several years. you have to do it, but it would make a lot more sense to trade chips: outfielder + pelfrey +……. than to give up a starter.

      • 4JoeOrsulak says:

        You. don’t. trade. Maine.

You want to improve your rotation, not go two steps forward and one step back. And Maine is too young.

When is the announcement that the deal fell through?

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

You know, when I saw in the paper this morning that it was “pending physical,” I thought the same thing.

and intends to do everything he can to help the Mets win next year.–Castillo

Wow, what a relief. I figured he wouldn’t be concerned with making an effort now that he has a contract. I guess his writers are on strike as well.

  9. Matt Hinrichs says:

Way to go Matt. Great job.

  10. neiljphx says:

yeah but….how many years and dollars? oh, that’s right…i don’t care. it’s not my money! (well….a teeny tiny bit is but….)

not sure i wouldn’t have done the Easley / Gotay / Whoever route but it’s good to see the club is still not afraid to spend a few dollars.

and at least 2b is ’settled’ for now
