News: White Sox trade Jon Garland to Angels
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 19, 2007 12:16 pm

The White Sox have traded RHP Jon Garland to the Angels for SS Orlando Cabrera and cash.

For more, check out Baseball Digest Daily.

The 28–year-old Garland, who will earn $12 million next season, won 18 games in each of 2005 and 2006, but has posted an ERA lower than 4.00 only once in the last five seasons.

He is eligible to be a free agent after next season.

Meanwhile, Cabrera will earn $9 million next season, after which he can be a free agent.  In 155 games for the Angels last season, Cabrera hit .301 with eight HR, 35 doubles and 20 stole bases.

Not that I like Garland all that much, but the starting pitching market has just gotten a little bit smaller. I don’t feel comfortable with the rotation we have at all.

  2. toomanyuniforms says:

That’s what starters cost, people. Say bye-bye to Milledge. Sad, but true. I think overpaying for Silva is sounding better and better. . . .

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its too bad milledge really grew on me this year but its almost guaranteed he’ll be traded for pitching this off season.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

He grew on me, too. I never felt good about trading him for Blanton (when that was being discussed), but I still think it would be a good deal. And if some teams are high on Gomez, he may need to go too (or, preferably, instead).

The one caveat is that unless we’re talking about Santana, we should be trading youth for youth. If Milledge goes, it should be a for a reasonably young pitcher with good years ahead. Given how tightly most teams hold their young pitchers (oh, except for the Mets — see Bannister, Brian), we may keep Milledge after all, and be forced to dip into the free agent pool. Again, Silva sounding better and better. . . .

  3. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

seems like a pretty fair trade for both teams. angels can replace injury prone colon with garland.

  4. njguy7676 says:

Yeah…someone wake Omar up and tell him the offseason has started.

So far we have been spurned by Torrealba, burned a bridge with LoDuca, offered 4 years to a hobbling 2B which it looks like he will accept, and not addressed any pitching concerns. Hopefully things heat up at the meetings.

    • Charlie says:

to be fair, it did seem like the mets spurred torrealba, not the other way around.

i agree with all else you said.

  5. BigHangWithEm says:

Silva is a fine option for the Mets. He’s basically Glavine but RH and significantly less walks

  6. napes22 says:

It’s a great deal for Anaheim. Ervin Santana was terrible last year, and Weaver was average. Garland will give them a good #4-5.

This move also clears the way for Brandon Wood to start at his original position. This kid is going to be somehting good.

    • JohnnyG says:

Wood isn’t ready. He was awful last year at both levels.

Still a great trade for the Angels. What are the White Sox thinking?

      • toomanyuniforms says:

They’re thinking they now have a top shortstop, and he’s probably still a couple years away from declining. They weren’t going to keep Garland. It’s a good deal.

        • JohnnyG says:

Getting a 33 yr old SS doesn’t make much sense for a team that is rebuilding. It would make more sense if they had plans to contend in the next 2 years.

    • Steinhardt says:

Cabrera had a carrer year and won a gold glove…you really think it’s that good a deal?

    • djbutler says:

If you look at his splits, Ervin Santana pitched well in August and September after being sent down for some retooling. I suspect that the league caught up to him and he needed to regain his confidence. He is going to be good.

Napes it right that this deal opens room for Brandon Wood, which is the primary benefit.

The problem is with Garland’s contract, you are paying $12 million in 2008 for a 4.40 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, innings eater, that’s a lot of halibat. It sure makes Carlos Silva or Livan Hernandez at $8 Mil per year not look so bad.

  7. Steinhardt says:

Now that Colon is officially not an option to resign…why not the Mets?

He’s a legit pitcher with plenty of upside for an incentive laden contract.

Garland by the way..is overrated at best…I think he’s had one good season in his carrer.

    • rogasm says:

Why did they make this deal? Didn’t the Sox resign Uribe earlier this offseason?

      • Skids says:

Just thinking the same thing, unless there’s another deal in the works or they expect Uribe to play 2nd or 3rd, this doesn’t make sense…

  8. Charlie says:

Eddie C is on the FAN right now…

  9. cuervo says:

isnt that on the level of Ruben Gotay for Garland?

  10. Skids says:

I guess the Angels will now be in the market for a big bat. They needed more offense PRIOR to this trade, but now they are desperate — Trade one Cabrera (Orlando) and trade for another (Miguel)???

  11. NYMetz6986 says:

great trade for the white sox…i dont really like garland at all and cabrera is a good player.

  12. stickguy says:

Hey, maybe the Angels will need delgado now?

trade him for some prospects that can be redirected elsewhere for a SP.

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

      they need a bat.
they need preferably a left handed bat.
      they need a power bat.
they need a bat that can play 1st base and dh with kotchman.

      delgado fits all 4 descriptions.
maybe we package delgado and a prospect for e.santana or s.t along those lines.

      • ReyesRocks says:

        …?

Who would WE have to play first? Another year of backup’s?

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

yea i love the idea but the delgado trade fantasy was kind of linked to the arod signing fantasy/dunn getting his option turned down fantasy….i mean who would we get to play 1st base in his absence? mike piazza?

  13. 1-18-31-7 says:

im guessing this means the angels plan to go all out for miguel cabrera. ss is now opened up for wood and getting garland makes it a lot easier for them to deal santana.

  14. tfc3rid says:

    Angels made out VERY well…

since during the season the Sox wanted big name prospects for Garland, that’s a really odd deal…

  15. gregf1106 says:

    RESPECT THE BEST

I’ve been saying that for a while now but that was before A-Rod, who are we going to get to play 1st?

    • RespectDaBestRM says:

it shouldnt be that hard to find a 1st basemen to bat 250 with 24 homers.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

FA 1st basemen…..sean casey, ryan klesko, darin erstad, tony clark, mike lamb, doug mientkiewicz. i dont see 250 and 25 hrs anywhere on that list.

  16. RealMetsFan says:

    How’s this for a solution..

Trade Carlos Delgado plus a small level prospect (or eat up some of Carlos contract ) to Arizona for Orlando Hudson and Conor Jackson.

    • stickguy says:

Now that would earn Omar his T shirt rights back! And solve 2 gaping holes for the Mets.

Pay the whole salary. It would be worth it.

  17. gregf1106 says:

We still wouldn’t have addressed the pitching issue and what would we do with castillo? trade him? How would that look and would other FA’s be scared to sign with us just to be shipped out somewhere right after we sign them? Thats a big, messy situation waiting to happen.

  18. BBmetsfreak36 says:

    werd

  19. el_giacomo says:

The White Sox are my AL team of choice (I grew up outside of Chicago), and I think they have a slight edge in this trade. Garland has appeared to be on a downswing lately, while O. Cabrera keeps improving. I’ve paid a good deal of attention to Cabrera these last few years as he has been my fantasy baseball shortstop of choice due to his relatively low price and consistent production. His .300 average doesn’t come in spurts. He gives a positive offensive contribution nearly every day he plays, and I’m glad to see him on a team I have more interest in rooting for than the Angels.

  20. Broadway Joe says:

i don’t get it you guys are worried about milledge leaving but the real problem is what the hell is omar doing he has done nothing this off season i mean he wants to add pitchers to the dam team but he lets the angels scoop a guy like garland whos a top fuc*kin pitcher am so god dam mad right now jesus what the hell do we have to do to get fuc*ing omar up off his ass and do more than add dam bench players we have money and better prospects than orlando what the hell

one dam starting pitcher is not goin to do it for this team we are in the whole in the 1 and 2 rotation pedro maine and perez are the 3 4 5 ….what the hell is omar doing and please dont tell me he thinks Silvia is a ace …he better get joe blanton and dan haren and make deals i dont care get rid of lastings pelfrey and the other so called prospect pitcher
