Since Tom Glavine is no longer on the Mets, Jose Reyes is now the longest tenured player on the Mets, followed by Aaron Heilman, both of whom made their debut in early 2003.
…thanks to DJ Short for pointing this out to me…
Pedro Feliciano made his major-league debut with the Mets in 2002, meaning he debuted before Reyes. However, Feliciano spent all of 2005 playing for the Softbank Hawks of the Japanese Pacific League, before re-signing with the Mets.
On June 10, 2003, Reyes made his major-league debut with the Mets, during an inter-league game in Texas, batting ninth in a lineup that included Roger Cedeno, Timo Perez, Roberto Alomar, Cliff Floyd, Jeromy Burnitz, Ty Wigginton, Jason Phillips and Vance Wilson with Steve Trachsel on the mound.

wow, how quickly time flies. seinfeld is right, we are just rooting for laundry, basically.
Just looking at that lineup gives me the chills.
i hope you mean in a good way. i no we collapsed but remember at the begginning of the year we were the best team inthe league.
No, definitely not in a good way. Names such as “Alomar” and “Cedeno” do not bring back happy memories.
Tentative 2008 Schedule (as of 11/19/07)
Dates listed below are according to team schedules posted on MLB.com. They are subject to change, but are all dates tentatively confirmed.
So far, It looks like we play ANA, SEA and TEX in Interleague, but not OAK. Obviously we will play 2 sets with the Yanks, but neither Mets nor Yanks schedules are out yet. Also, according to the Rockies website, we play 2 road series in COL, one of these is most likely a home series at Shea.

Great work. Can this man get a managerial job- PLEASE?
wally, it’s possible that the Mets play in COL twice and once at home. The way the sched sets up you play at least one non-divisional opponent 9 times. I think the Mets were in LA twice last year for instance.
And didn’t we just play the AL West in interleague? strange. I guess it was 2005 when the M’s visited Shea, which would make sense. No favors from the sched maker though, not getting to play the awful A’s sucks.
Can’t believe that Reyes came in before Heilman. I did not recall that. Feels like Heilman has been around forever already.
On the subject of Heilman, I think if they do not have a successful offseason early with the pitching trades being discussed, they should pencil in Heilman as the starter and bring in a closer type guy (Francisco Cordero) to be the new 8th inning guy and also hope that Sanchez returns to form.
Heilman went pitch for pitch 2 years ago in ST with Bannister and many thought he earned the starting 5 spot role then but Bannister was given the job. A year later, Bannister is essentially one of the top 15 pitchers in the AL. No reason to think Heilman can not at least compete for a the 5 spot on this team.
If we are left to decide between signing Livan Hernandez and leaving Heilman where he has been in the pen or
Signing Cordero and moving Heilman to the rotation, which one do you think is more likely to provide success for our MEts?
why do people think Heilman would be a good starter? He has a fastball and off speed pitch and that is it. A starter needs at least 3 good pitches to get through a lineup 2, 3,4 times in a game. He pitch repertoire is great for a bullpen guy who may have to get through the line up once (though if this is the case over 2 innings, he has given up some hits and is not being effective) but not someone who you want to throw 6 or 7 innings. I would trade Heilman with one of out other youngsters for a good starter and move Pelfrey to the bullpen to become out new Heilman. Same thing with him – only a couple of pitches which does not work on the big league level.
Heilman actually has 3 pitches (fastball, changeup, slider), but only uses 2 in the bullpen (fastball, changeup) because the 3rd pitch isn’t usually necessary. If he were to start, I’m sure he’d incorporate the slider more. I agree with you on Pelfrey though. I think he’d do well in the bullpen since all he’d have to worry about is reaching back and throwing heat.
He also started messing with a splitter in 2006, with varying effectiveness.
Besides, sometimes, two pitches are all you need. Look at Doc. Unhittable with the fastball-curveball; very hittable when Stottlemeyer started trying to get him throwing a splitter.
remember that you’re comparing DOC GOODEN to AARON HEILMAN.
and no, he needs more than 2 pitches in the bullpen. maybe if he was absolutely dominant you’d be right in that he only needs 2, but people just sit on his changeup (that one guy who catches for the cardinals, can’t remember his name) and knock him around.
They sit on his changeup and knock him around? Really? Well then they’re doing a pretty bad job considering they hit .224 against him in 2007.
Bannister is a top 15 pitcher?!?!?! thats nuts.
Beckett

… that’s just off the top of my head, there is no way Bannister is even in the top 25 AL pitchers. I would take any of these guys before the soft tossing junkballer that is Bannister.
Met fans need to get off of this kid’s jock. Don’t you remember wathing him 2 years ago before he blew his hamstring out? The guy was a virtual conga line. Each batter would get to 3-2 then walk. by the start of the 5th inning he was already over 100 pitches. Bannister stinks, I’m glad the Mets ditched him.
Its an option but Cordero is not coming here to be a set up man. Unless we give him closer money and tell him he will have the job when Wagner is gone but that’s a lot of money. IF (BIG IF) Sanchez is healthy he is dominant anyway.
I say at this point we should bring in Rauch and use Heilman with Gomez in a trade for a young pitcher with potential such as Garza or Cabrerra.
It also might be time to give Pelfrey a shot in the bullpen. This way, he can just reach back and throw his heater (and stop throwing sinkers) and not have to worry about his secondary pitches all that much.
But his sinker and his fastball are his bread and butter. That’s what makes Pelfry so intriguing. The guy can be a GB machine like Wang or Carmona.
It’s just when he pitched that gem against Atlanta (6IP, 1H, 7), he was blowing people away with his fastball which was consistently at 96-97. Pretty much every other start, he was toning down to 90-93 (trying to get groundballs) and he didn’t do so well. I just think he’s always been a power pitcher and that’s his bread and butter.
well yeah, i guess what i meant is if mixes the two together more effectively and keeps his control he’ll be a good one.
nice slide against the Jankos btw!! Way to catch Posada napping
Boy, that Steve Phillips really knew how to put together a ball club, didn’t he? Funny thing: Wilpon canned Phillips a day or two after Jose made his debut.
To be fair, at the time, everyone in the baseball universe thought that getting Roberto Alomar was an absolute genius move, as did I. He was coming off a 3rd place MVP vote. At only 33 years old, who would have thought he would have turned into Rey Sanchez? All his other moves were laughed at though, especially Mo Vaughn.
You mean “Rerun” Vaughn….”Hey, Hey Hey!!!!!”
Yes, I agree….who woulda thought Alomar would have completely forgotten how to play baseball……
But…..In terms of Mo Vaughn……
Look back and see who went on that infamous trip to CT to watch Mo hit in a batting cage and subsequently declared him fit to play baseball.
Phillips…..Bobby V……..Omar………..
Granted it was Phillips call in the end (unless the Wilpons demanded it….which I don’t think was the case here)….but for Bobby V and Omar to be there too and this move to still happen….jeze
It was the slow-pitch softball cage, but next to Mo a softball looks like a baseball so you can understand their confusion.
Well, I’m sure all Bobby V and Omar were asked to do was evaluate his talent, not give their thoughts on if it was a good baseball decision. I bet Phillips had the deal already in place, but did the batting cage trip just to finalize. And anyone can look good hitting batting practice (like Bobby Abreu who looked like Babe Ruth during that home run derby).
Well yeah…I’m not excusing the move…..but sometimes people just tend to forget who actually went on that trip..that it wasn’t just Phillips.
True. And actually, at that time, Omar was the Assistant GM, so maybe he had some say in that decision after all.
And maybe this is all conjecture. Who knows what say Bobby V or Omar had? Only those three…
Dont forget that it was Kevin Appier going in the other direction in that trade. Appier was eventually released by the Angels who had to eat his overpaying contract rather than the Mets. And with the insurance $ on Mo’s injuries helping, you can make the case that the Angels got the worst of that trade.
Actually, Reyes is the longest-tenured Met. Feliciano spent 2005 playing in Japan.
We should bring back Mo Vaughn so Delgado’s defensive inabilities will be overlooked.
What do you guys think of getting the two Fat Boys… David Wells and Livan Hernandez? The idea came to me this morning reading the NYPost… not sure how good they are but the would generally get past the 5th inning and eat some innings with giving up an occasional blowout….
We should also see what Mickey Lolich is doing these days…
livan hernandez, sidney poson, bartolo colon and david wells. nice rotation right there, they may not lead in runs allowed over 9 innings but they will definately eat the most during the 9 innings.
They might have to reinforce the mound to handle the extra weight.
Assuming the mets need 1 more SP (I like to give Pelfrey a spot in the rotation for 2008), Omar pretty much has 4 choices.
Pay a huge price for a #1/ace (Haren, Peavy, Santana, Bedard have been mentioned, anyone else come to mind). Pretty much clear cut the farm system
Pay a stiff (overpay?) price for a mid level but legit starter, or a young guy with upside (Blanton, Garza seem to be the popular names mentioned). Pay a heavy price in prospects still, but don’t expect as high a return.
Pay $$ only (but too many years) for a proven mediocrity to “eat innings” (and give up lots of runs in the process) – your basic Livan/Silva pool
Roll the dice for a cheap reclamation project (less money/years, no prospect toll) – Jennings, Colon have been floated.
What to do then? IMO, it depends on what potential Omar sees in his own young guys. If Pelfrey is deemed ready and Humber is looked at as a viable mid year addition (or Mulvey), then roll the dice with a reclamation project, since if it flames out, no big loss.
If they don’t expect any young guys to pan out, then option 1 or 2 is most likely, although I hope they go smart and trade less for a guy like Garza, hoping to capture the upside, and retain more prospects for other use.
option 1 is least liekly, and is taking a huge risk, since it can cripple the team for years to come if you trade away too much.
I just hate the 3rd option (”innings eaters”) since they will stink now, and stink for years to come. Kind of like buying the 1/2 price fish that is about to go bad, when you don’t plan to eat it for another week!
great post, stickguy. Minnesota has pitching to burn, and has a reputed interest in Gomez. I think we would do well to humor them on that score, and relieve them of some of their excess arms.
The problem with option 1 is that, given the perceived value of our prospects, the big ace may cost us one of Maine and Perez, leaving us again with a hole in the rotation. Both pitchers have the potential to be 20 game winners in the next year or two- they need to be untouchable if this team wants sustainable success.
agreed. Any move that takes a current member of the rotatin away is a non-starter.
All these Neanderthals that seem to greet every piece of news concerning the current Mets with ” — sucks!” ( insert any name you care to ), need to ponder that lineup from only 4 short years ago.
If they still believe that Minaya and Randolph etc. haven’t moved our team in the right direction, I see no point in either arguing with them or, frankly wasting much time noting what they have to say…
