The problem with option 1 is that, given the perceived value of our prospects, the big ace may cost us one of Maine and Perez, leaving us again with a hole in the rotation. Both pitchers have the potential to be 20 game winners in the next year or two- they need to be untouchable if this team wants sustainable success.

Dont forget that it was Kevin Appier going in the other direction in that trade. Appier was eventually released by the Angels who had to eat his overpaying contract rather than the Mets. And with the insurance $ on Mo’s injuries helping, you can make the case that the Angels got the worst of that trade.

It’s just when he pitched that gem against Atlanta (6IP, 1H, 7), he was blowing people away with his fastball which was consistently at 96-97. Pretty much every other start, he was toning down to 90-93 (trying to get groundballs) and he didn’t do so well. I just think he’s always been a power pitcher and that’s his bread and butter.
