The Red Sox have issued a press release to announce the signing of 3B Mike Lowell to a three-year deal, details have not yet been disclosed.
…no real surprise here, been hearing about it for a few days now, i’ll update with official contract info as soon as i have it…
Update: Rotoworld.com is reporting that the deal is three-years for $37.5 million which he accepted despite an apparent last minute offer from the Phillies of $50 million over four-years.
…the part about the phillies is interesting, they were denying interest in lowell the entire time. if that offer was actually on the table, then lowell must have had a real desire to stay in boston, and i’m glad he did. this should appease the red sox fans as Theo Epstein and company got this one right…

incredible. epstein can get a good 33 year old third basemen coming off a career year in which he helps his team win a world series to sign a three year deal, and omar can’t get the same aged broken down second basemen with no power to settle for less than four.
i hope the guy that said ‘the red sox win inspite of theo’ is paying attention. THIS is how you run a team. you maintain enough options and talent so you don’t force yourself to overpay in money or years for players all the time like the mets do. this organization has such a long way to go; it’s really depressing.
and also, give credit to lowell. he probably easily could’ve gotten 4yrs/13mil from somebody. thank god the mets didn’t need a third basemen or omar would’ve given him a beltran contract.
Not for nothing but Lowell’s career was over. He was a toss in with the sox with Beckett. You want Beckett…you take this scrub lowell and his fat contract. But to the sox and Lowells credit, he got playing time and he made the most of it reclaiming a career that was literally over.
Frankly, he owed it to the Sox for giving him a chance to play on that team to take less to come back. It was a pretty unique circumstance.
Can you think of one like it with the METS? I can’t
Sure, Lowell was a salary dump taken on by the Red Sox, but it’s a silly notion to say he “owed” it to them to come back for a smaller contract.
J.D. Drew
Julio Lugo.
bad first years. bad contracts happen. the point is they’re not constantly backed into a corner having to give every FA top dollar.
i think winning a world series might have had something to do with him wanting to stay in Boston…and taking less money to do so.
What worries me is that they’re willing to spend the bucks. My question if anyone can answer is do they have what it takes to make a trade for an Oswalt or Johan? How is the Phillie farm system?
