News: Mets Acquire C Estrada
By D.J. Short - Nov 20, 2007 6:39 pm

The Mets have traded RHP Guillermo Mota to the Brewers in exchange for C Johnny Estrada.

Omar Minaya, on the acquisition of Estrada…

“Johnny adds depth to our catching situation. He’s a former All-Star who switch-hits and has hit over .300 three times in his career.”

In 120 games with the Brewers last season, Estrada hit .278 with 10 homers and 54 RBI.

He threw out just 7.6 percent of runners attempting to steal, the worst among NL catchers.

Estrada underwent arthroscopic surgery on October 4th to repair torn medical meniscus in his left knee. He also had a bone spur removed from his right elbow.

…so long and good riddance, Mota…looks like the mets may have found their catcher…i’ve never been thrilled with estrada’s patience at the plate, but with the options presented, this is a potential low-risk, high-reward type of move…

…oh yeah, see ya paulie…

    THANK GOD.

    • jdon says:

I jokle with m friends about how Willie gets outmanaged by every manager he faces with the exception of Ned Yost and Grady Little. Well, it looks like Omar has fond the man he can out-GM. Melvin, this is Juice-Boy we are talking about! Thank you and God bless. I am putting a check mark on Omar’s resume but lets not get carried away. I still smell a Dontrelle fiasco.

  2. icedrake523 says:

At least Mota is gone. Estrada is a poor option, IMO.

    • stickguy says:

For one year, a decent pick up.

    • Krusty The Klown says:

estrada is better than any1 else available. much better than torrealba aswell

      • icedrake523 says:

I’d rather Ramon Hernandez. I think his price of a “top prospect” could have been talked down.

        • darkstar73 says:

glad you “think” that, you must be talking to a bunch of GM’s huh? How’s that going for you? All in all, you can’t complain about this move. Omar has done well, you can’t predict the future, so you act on what’s in front of you. Good move, especially if Estrada is healthy again.

        • icedrake523 says:

Hernandez is making a lot of money with the Orioles, he had a very bad year last year with the bat and injuries. It could have been talked down. Especially if Omar was able to get Estrada for Mota.

        • JefJarrett says:

Then what makes him any different than Estrada?

Hernandez still would have cost a 2nd tiered prospect most likely which we can now spin for some assistance at bullpen……….

Estrada is making less than mota…so if he needs to be cut if he is not performing….then we save money…and can go ahead and acquire someone else

        • icedrake523 says:

          Hernandez is much better defensively.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Estrada hit better than Hernandez, and he isn’t a slouch with the glove. Minaya is a genius.

        • metinDC23 says:

I thought the O’s wanted a top prospect cause they wanted to pay most of Hernandez’s salary. It isn’t a salary dump for them- their rebuilding.

    • jdon says:

How different is he from LoDuca offensively? LoDuca is a stiff in the RBI dept and he hits the slowest grounders on the planet. Neither of them throw worth a damn.

  3. stickguy says:

OK, Omar gets a passing grade on this one.

I feel vindicated standing up for Omar keeping Mota, instead of cutting him, for this very reason. Live arm, short and managable contract, someone was going to bite.

  4. Krusty The Klown says:

that is an amazing trade just amazing

  5. blow me says:

i can tolerate this…no more mota and we pick up a solid platoon at catcher…estrada is a career .280 hitter and as recently as 2006 he hit .302/11/71…didnt realize he was such a decent stick…

    RIP PLD.

  6. dontstopbelieving says:

Estrada had a pretty horrendous year last year — in fact, his OPS+ was 2 points lower than Lo Duca’s. And he was worst in the league at throwing out baserunners. That said, just by the numbers he’s the bret saberhagen of catchers — alternating good-year-bad-year since 2004. So hopefully he bounces back, and if nothing else he’s got to be better than difelice…and if nothing else, this gets Mota out of town.

Hopefully Castro will still get the lion’s share of the starts.

    • x-nady says:

Also, he had a bone spur removed from his throwing elbow, which most likely affected his throws. Hopefully that will bring his % back up.

      • yagottabelieve says:

Threw out 31 percent in 2005, then 29 percent in 2006 – both decent numbers. This year, with the bone spur, threw out a career low 13 – so there’s reason to hope he can do better if healthy.

Besides – he’s the offensive end of the platoon. Castro has a great arm, and we should probably resign DiFelice to another minor league deal to be another defensive-minded backup just in case Castro’s back acts up.

I like it – solid player for a guy we would have given away for nothing.

  7. Steve In Tampa says:

The fact that we could get anything more than a fungo bat for Mota is amazing…Well Done Omar :)

  8. Don Logan says:

Not sure of his contract status offhand but estrada/castro strict platoon for a year or 2 certainly beats these other alternatives on the market and via free agency. we need our chips for pitching.

    • ReyesRocks says:

      1 yr @ 3.4 million

      • adropofvenom says:

He’s in the final year of arbitration. Likely he gets 4-5 million there. But hey, we were willing to pay that for Torrealba, this is at least a 1 year deal for someone who you could make the case is better.

  9. nagel100 says:

Omar make something out of nothing.

    amazing.

    Yee of little faith.

    • Number41 says:

Willie better get to a self defense class right away

      • acoustic567 says:

Ned Yost has a touch of redneck in him and that might help explain his little tete-a-tete with Estrada. I think it unlikely the same kind of thing would happen with Randolph.

  10. JefJarrett says:

Estrada is more attractive than any of the catching options out there right now…..it’s only for one year.

And this gets Mota off the team as well……..

So we have our catcher…..and still all the prospects to offer up for pitching/bullpen help.

    excellent deal

    • acoustic567 says:

“Johnny adds depth to our catching situation,” said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya.

What do you take from that comment? Doesn’t sound like an anointment of Estrada as the starting catcher.

    • jdon says:

we will need a 3rd catcher for when Ramon makes his 3 trips to the DL

      • yagottabelieve says:

DeFelice fits that role just fine – sign him to another minor league deal. Can’t hit worth a lick but he makes a decent emergency option because he calls a good game, plays good defense and throws well.

  11. Number41 says:

At 31, he has the injuries, but he’s a tad young for The Mets.

  12. Danny says:

This is a brilliant move by Omar. Brilliant. Low-risk, high-reward stuff. Mota was terrible karma and needed to go. He won’t be missed. I love this trade, even if Estrada sucks next year. He’s only a one-year commitment.

    • acoustic567 says:

The fact that the Brewers were eager to replace this guy with Jason Kendall suggests to me that there were some personality problems with Estrada. Throwing issues aside, he doesn’t have a great reputation for working with pitchers, and he did have that brouhaha with Yost last year. I think the guy is kind of a mediocred defensive catcher, but he can hit a little and at least he’s a plausible major league catcher. Maybe Castro will get a good number of starts.

  13. kidderek says:

Like it. Save the prospects for a run at Johan.

  14. jf10272 says:

    YES, Finally he is gone

    • sellitman says:

Addition by subtraction with a catcher thrown in for good measure.

      As the Guinness boyz say”Brilliant”

  15. toomanyuniforms says:

If Estrada has a pulse, it’s gravy.

  16. sylvan says:

Very nice. Estrada is a competent switch-hitter who could platoon with Castro. He has a career .740 OPS as a lefty, .682 as a righty. Hopefully he can bounce back from his sub-.300 OBA season in 07/

  17. Ryn5 says:

    Great deal.

Getting ANYTHING for Mota is simply amazing.

  18. kasper11 says:

    Average catcher >>>>> awful reliever

  19. a817 says:

i liked Hernandez a lot more (he hit 25hr a year ago) but estrada did hit double digit hr for two years in a row, which is more than what we can say for lo duca. It is a good move compared to what you had to give up for Hernandez and he cant be much worse at throwing out base runners after the surgery. Our lineup is a little stronger now with estrada than loduca. He is a national league silver slugger and has hot over .300 a couple of times. In the last 3 years he has averaged .297 with runner on. A good pick up. But i have a feeling that mota will “suspiciously” be light out next year like how he was in 2006.

    • gowrightgo says:

We dont need the power to come from the 8th spot in the lineup. We need him to hold the fort and stay healthy and share time with Castro.

I can actually see a scenario where this platoon gets 20 plus hrs and 80 plus rbi out of the 8 spot with them literally platooning lefty righty based on who is pitching.

Lets go to work boys. Find the pitching.

      Oh and terrific job OMAR

    • ArmandoReynoso says:

Actually Herandez hit 23 HR a year ago — he’s never hit 25. He hit 9 last year, and only reached 20 twice in an 8 yr career… and one of those came in Baltimore (a hitter’s park).

  20. PDubs says:

Is it Christmas already???? Best news I’ve gotten in a long time. I can’t believe another team actually wants Mota.

    • christian warrior says:

I hope it’s not just because they wanted to dump Estrada as much as we wanted to dump Mota.

      • darkstar73 says:

cynical as always…however, if he’s healthy, something I think the Mets must have looked into (can’t know for sure at this point though I suppose) this is a steal. Estrada has had prolonged success elsewhere and its not like he suddenly fell off a cliff like Mota did, and then reemerged out of nowhere to only tank once again. Getting rid of Mota helps, no matter how you look at it.

      • acoustic567 says:

It is. Estrada burned his bridges with the Brewers.

  21. Gilch says:

WOW …. a VERY VERY solid trade by OMAR .. i dont think theres a met fan out here that wanted to see mota anywhere near the mets this year …. this move isnt going to headline tonights sportcenter … but a GREAt trade …..

    • gowrightgo says:

It is great exactly because Mota is gone. Most of us would have preferred they simply cut him before spring training. But to solve our catching dilemma perfectly with him, that is just too much to ask for or expect. WAY TO GO OMAR

  22. nagel100 says:

the team is now set with one major deal left. a starting pitcher.

Haren for Milledge, Heilman and Humber works for me. Hopefully for them as well.

Gomez claims RF and FMart stays for the future. Keep pelfrey for the 5th spot and Mulvery for next year.

Put El Duque in the pen and spot starter. Hope that Sanchez is healthy.

    • gowrightgo says:

They need more than one move. They still need 3 in my mind.

2 starters (one of the ace variety and one of the middle level variety who can give you 200 innings)
Plus one top shelf 8th inning level reliever

  23. zen says:

very nice move. hopefully, omar can bring in a solid starter and good reliever w/o trading everything from the system

lots of age gone: glavine, franco, lo duca, valentin, green with alou and delgado to follow after 08. wouldn’t mind giving garza a shot to go with a young rotation of ollie, maine, garza, pelfrey, pedro

garza lets you keep two of the three outfield prospect for each corner to go with wright and reyes for a young core in both the staff and everyday line-up going into citifield

  24. BaysideBillyD says:

    Nice deal. Omar… nice deal.

All prospects still in place so that we can throw the whole lot of them at Minnesota if we have to.
We are going to have to go with a quantity over quality theme though. Assuming the Yankees would be willing to throw Hughes and Cabrerra at them, and Boston would throw Crisp and Bucholz… we are going to have to give up another name or two to get Johan.

  25. gometzies_18 says:

Nice Move Omar – This is a win – win – win – win

Win – Solid player in Estrada, who’s solid defensively and can handle the bat, and its not like we need much offensive production from the catcher spot.

Win – Dump Mota and his absurd contract. He’s just not that good without (or with) the juice

Win – We don’t have to overpay Torrealba, who I don’t think would have been any better than Castro

Win – Keep all our trade bait for pitching.

Best move so far this offseason

    • christian warrior says:

Only move so far this offseason…

      • JefJarrett says:

I like you, cw…..so I’m gonna assume you mean trades….

Omar has made several signings/resignings so far.

        • christian warrior says:

I did mean trades, actually. In keeping with my stick-in-the-mud attitude, I just can’t help feeling that certain parts of this team should have been completely replaced after the way last season ended. Not just resigned to longer contracts and added to.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this trade is a no-brainer. Mota had to go. But I think that letting Glavine and Lo Duca walk while resigning two guys who are just about assured of spending time on the DL is not going to make all that much of a difference in 2008.

          That’s J, A, Double R…E, Double T…Double J…Jeff Jarret.

Your name reminds me of my childhood. God I hated that guy. He was such an ass.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

lmao, yup Jarrett was a total ass!

        • JefJarrett says:

Lol…yeah, i always liked him cause he was an ass…..it was great.

          Ain’t I great…..

cw…u doin ur FF again this year? we should just do a keeper league if were gonna do it every year (well ive done it twice now)

  26. Jay says:

    Great trade Omar.

  27. beltransmole says:

Can’t believe we got anything for Mota. It doesn’t take a superstar to come in and give up back-to-back-to-back doubles in a one run game in the 8th. I guess Milwaukee was in the market for an awful relief pitcher. Good deal.

  28. ReyesRocks says:

Ironic how less than five hours ago the majority of the posts were complaining about how the Mets weren’t making enough moves for them, (not the same guys) and now they’re saying how we’re almost set for the coming season, except for Pitching.

  29. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I have been a big critic of Omar as of late but he redeemed himself somewhat with this trade. Getting rid of Mota instantly improves the morale of the fanbase. To get a decent catcher in return for that bum only takes it over the top. But we musnt get overly excited yet. Omar still needs to make a big trade for a starting pitcher. The fact that he wont do the Gomez for Garza deal baffles me but maybe he will change his mind. Or maybe there is a deal for Santana or Dontrelle he might make instead but I would do Gomez for Garza regardless. It would be a rape of a trade being that Garza can be a stud ace pitcher and we have enough OF prospects with Gomez being the least talented of them. I think we get Garza, keep Milledge in RF, and then we still have my favorite prospect F. Martinez along with Pelfrey, Humber, and Mulvey of whom one can develop into a stud.

    • Ryn5 says:

Assuming the Twins will do a straight up Gomez for Garza, you’re making a baseless assumption.

    • ReyesRocks says:

The Garza trade is just a speculation by a media member isn’t it, I really don’t think that it’s ever been reported as an actual possibility. You can’t really bust Omar’s chops just because he didn’t do a deal that some Journalist suggested. He’s gotta convince Minnesota to buy into it too.

Like you said, Gomez for Garza would be rape.
There’s obviously much more involved to it.

      • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Keith Law said on ESPN.com Hot Stove Video that the deal was there for Omar and he said no.

        • Meddler says:

Just like Ken Rosenthal said that LoDuca would be a Met again, then that he wouldn’t, then that he would, then that he wouldn’t, then that he might. Just because they’re “experts” doesn’t mean they’re particularly well informed, they’re just the best speculators and info spinners.

    • Krusty The Klown says:

id take dtrain, but not for alot, he’s almost as worse off as perez was in 06. idk if we can have 2 projects on the staff in perez and dtrain

      • ReyesRocks says:

I agree. D-train would fit into the rotation very good, so long as you didn’t have to give up too much.

      • Meddler says:

Yeah but Perez had one decent season, Dontrelle had a bunch not to mention one superb season.

        • gowrightgo says:

Dontrelle is not the same pitcher. Poor velocity as opposed to his better seasons. I think he was simply overused and his arm is not the same. Pass

        • Krusty The Klown says:

a bunch? more like 1 good, 1 average, 1 superb, 1 okay, and one awful

      • lawgotham says:

Dontrelle is beginning to remind me of Kevin Millwood, good one year, bad the next. I just have a bad feeling about him. Though i fyou’re gonna take a flyer on him, do it this year while his trade value is down.

      • cleonsvan says:

Dtrain is definitely the goods. I would go for him in a second. He’s only 26, a lefty power pitcher and is at a point of decreased value. Its the prefect time. Plus, historically, lefties peak later in their careers.Go for it Omar.

    • christian warrior says:

Omar wouldn’t do a Gomez for Garza swap?! Yes he would.

If anyone were hesitating on pulling the trigger on that trade it would most certainly be the Twinkies.

      • gowrightgo says:

You said CW. MOre bs from the media. It was likely Gomez and Humber and Gotay or something like that for Garza where Omar said ….dude maybe Gomez straight up but not with the others….juuu know what i’m sayin?

  30. oriskany77 says:

A good trade, but I’m also aware that Estradad was no doubt about to non-tendered by the Brewers, who saw a way to get something back in the process. I’d think that Brewers fans are saying similar things as we are about the benefits of this trade. They get a reliever with at least some value and one who was very successful in the past. I like this but I’m putting it in perspective.

  31. christian warrior says:

It’s really hard to say much negative about this trade. Everyone knew Mota was a mistake, and a LH hitting catcher fills a gaping hole.

This team is not ready for the season, however. We need an SP.

Am I right about this? If nothing changes, will this be the first Righty/Lefty catching tandem we have had since Barry Lyons/Mackey Sasser? Ahh, the glory days…

  32. keystonetom says:

I always liked Estrada when he was in the Phillies system. He played at Scranton WB and played well. I like the pick up.

  33. Krusty The Klown says:

with this deal is the lineup about set? reyes, castillo, wright, beltran, alou, delgado, milledge, estrada seems about set to me

  34. Jared Blank says:

Ill add to this thread with the obvious- I love this move. Period.

  35. BMetsFan says:

It’s a good move. I think the “depth” comment means Castro will be #1, Estrada will be Castro’s Castro.

    • Charlie says:

I have to disagree with you on that. I think it is Omar’s way of not having to say who the starter will be. If Omar wanted Castro to be a starter, he would have just said it. He also would not have traded Mota for a catcher that has been very much better than Castro.

      • BMetsFan says:

I think you are right. Estrada’s numbers when healthy are much better than Castro’s. I do think they will try to increase Castro’s role somewhat.

        • Don Logan says:

I think it may also mean that Minaya hasn’t talked to Estrada yet. He’s not going to annoint someone’s position on the club until he at least gets to sit down and talk with the guy. They probably hustled up the press release to get it out and the PR person put in a vague quote from Minaya. I wouldn’t read too much into it. I think they’ll platoon.

  36. Metro41 says:

Sign Fukudome (2 yrs plus option) and trade Millege in a package.

Gomez isn’t ready for prime time (1-2 yrs away).

    • natew says:

Fukudome would make sense in that he wont cost the Mets a draft pick, and it free’s up Milledge to be traded for a starter which again wont cost that draft pick.

Omar almost seems intent on not signing anyone that will cost a draft pick. He went with Alou and Castillo when he could have explored other options. He trades for a catcher when there are Type A free agents available. Seems to want to trade for a pitcher rather than sign some of the retreads that are available for compensation.

If Omar can negotiate this offseason by trading some of his high end prospects rather than signing free agents, and comes out of it with 2 first round draft picks as well as keeping lower experience prospects, I think we should all be back on his bandwagon…

Managing to be stay competitive while restocking the farm system, thats what it has to be about for the upper tier teams. And thats what Omar seems to be attempting this year after a couple years of letting it get depleted.

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

      Whatever.

  37. Metro41 says:

Oh yeah, this is a very good move. See ya Paulie.

Now if we could get rid of Dolan and Thomas, I’d have something to watch tonight.

  38. Meddler says:

Wow, amazing, and to think if the Brewers hadn’t signed Kendall he and Mota would have likely been battery-mates. We got away with murder here just getting rid of having to play Mota anymore money, not to mention got a reasonable catcher.

  39. loopenark says:

Wow, Omar pulls a great one. Just goes to show you how desperate teams are for pitching. Now, he actually might be able to get something for Sosa, too!

I wouldn’t bring DiFelice back as he’s going to be 92 next year. But I’m sure someone will be non-tendered and then Omar can pick up on a minor-league deal to be the catcher in waiting in NO.

    • Mets24 says:

“Just goes to show you how desperate teams are for pitching”
      You call Mota a pitcher?

    • lawgotham says:

I’m guessing that DiFelice will be back with the Mets in the minors. I read somewhere a while ago that he worked well with the kid pitchers but i’ll be darned if I could remember where.

  40. kendychavez says:

i’m going to miss mota. i’m gonna send him a nice fruit basket.

    • boozermetsfanver1 says:

can we ship off shoenweis for sheets while we’re at it! see how dumb this brew crew GM is.

  41. Number41 says:

    “Omar, long distance from Milwaukee”
and the Terrible Torrealba deal is yanked from the table….
and that my friends is how the mystery unfolded.

    • Steve from Norfolk says:

Finally, someone states the obvious! Now we know why there was no reason given for the Torrealba deal falling apart. Torrealba was probably sitting in a hospital gown going “I passed the exam. Anybody got a pen….Hey, where’d everybody go??”

  42. Jared Blank says:

    anone post this yet?

Ironic if he’s on Mitchell Report…

  43. falcon4e says:

Matt Cerrone is the special guest at the chat. It seems like a cool board with some informative posters. It could use other solid posters. It sure would beat having to rely on the Met board all the time..

  44. Jrock6986 says:

This trade has been the first enjoyment ive experienced in my met fanhood in quite some time. Its been a long and dark eery pertiod of time since the collapse has started, and this move along with yesterdays signing of Castillo starts to make me feel good again as a Met fan. Im hoping Omar is just getting started and is going to make this the offseason that puts us over the top. Time will tell.

Im really hoping we can still make a move with the twins to get Santana and Garza.(Im sure it would take Milledge, Gomez, Heilman , Humber and Mulvey, if not more and I would still do it) or a move with the A’s to get Dan Haren and address the bullpen by signing David Riske and Scott Linebrink/or other available righty not named Mota, Heilman, or Benitez

    • acoustic567 says:

When push comes to shove, I don’t believe that we are going to be competitive for Santana. The Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, and Red Sox can all put together better packages of prospects than we can. One of those teams is going to end up with Miguel Cabrera, but the other three will still be able to go after Santana. If we want to get Santana, we are going to have include someone like John Maine in the deal, and I really wouldn’t want the Mets to do that.

I also think we’d end up giving up more than we should for Haren.

Also: The Twins have not definitely decided to make Santana available this offseason.

I would rather see us make a lesser deal for a guy like Garza. I know that having a true #1 would be the greatest thing, but if we could put together a rotation of #2s and #3s, and got some bullpen help, we might be able to avoid having to deplete our system entirely. In particular, Mulvey looks like he may be a keeper.

  45. Teufel Shuffle says:

Haven’t been this excited about a deal since the Mets unloaded Mel Rojas for Bobby Bonilla! Oh wait…

  46. cmon_mets08 says:

One bullpen poison down!! now if only a team would trade a bat boy for “choke-unwise”

  47. calling all toasters says:

“Oh, Paulie? You won’t see him no more.” –Peter Clemenza

    • Keith17 says:

What a move. Obviously it’s not the big one we’re waiting for, but it’s a start. None of us ever wanted to see Mota come out our bullpen again. Given what was available, I’m fine with our catching situation now. Glad it’s out of the way so Omar can get focused on pitching.

    • ChiliGTC says:

      nice…..

  48. Matt Hinrichs says:

Great move. Not the greatest catcher available, but you get rid of Mota. I would of done that for just about anyone.

    • Mister Koo says:

He’s probably the best offensive catcher available though. Playing through injuries last year, he still hit .278 with 10 home runs.

  49. STUBZ says:

I guess this means no Lo Duca.
    But THANK GOD anyway.

  50. metsfreek3 says:

HAHA W000000t next stop Bedard or Santana! i wish wooooooooooo no motaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  51. gipper913 says:

    Muy bien, Omar!

This is such a no-brainer win/win for the Mets. Sets up a nice platoon at C with some good upside for production from th 8 hole in the lineup.

    Bye Paulie.

  52. Bel-TRON says:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?? ANY1 complaining about this trade should shut up. We are lucky to even get a player back in return for Mota. I mean THANK GOD for this trade. Omar is looks like a genius again for this one. Estrada is a Top 10 or top 15 catcher if u sit and go thru the names.

  53. lawgotham says:

Once again, Omar does well. While Estrada is not Gary Carter, he is a perfect LH tandem for Castro. To be able to give up Mota in this deal is icing on the cake. Additionally, his contract is not huge. This keeps the Wilpon’s happy. So far so good with Castillo and Estrada. Let’s see what he puts under the Met faithful’s Christmas tree.

  54. VCarver says:

Good move by Omar, but don’t give him too much credit for simply fixing a mistake that many could see coming from a mile away and which no one forced him to make last winter.

Any catcher who threw out just 13% of runners last year, has a lifetime CS% of just 24%, and is coming off of surgery is no treat. However,. it does appear he’s a good complement to Castro. Hopefully, they can split time instead of Castro just being a backup.

    Good riddance to Mota.

  55. Trumpzilla says:

Yay! Omar recitfied his own bad mistake in the first place!

No credit for him for cleaning up his own mess.

  56. theCoop says:

Hey guys, the word in the Brewers country is that Estrada is a cancer – I like the move, don’t get me wrong – i’m just happy we were able to get a warm body for Mota – but Estrada is the one who got in a fight with his managaer last year (story here)

  57. Constnza81V2.0 says:

This is classic headache for headache but at least the headache we got in return fills a need and won’t get booed the minute his name is announced in April.

Estrada could hit .200 and throw out 0.0% of baserunners and it’s still a good move. Addition by subtraction.

  58. the_other_matt says:

don’t get me wrong I like this trade…but man Omar can spin: “He’s a former All-Star who switch-hits and has hit over .300 three times in his career,” Mets general manager Omar Minaya said.

Um, Omar…one of those years Estrada had a whopping 36 ABs.

  59. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

needless to say a great move. the team is better simply without mota around. but i’m still reluctant to trade milledge for anything but a bona fide ACE. gomez will never be anything more than alex ochoa. milledge is going to be a legit .300 hitter with some power. as for martinez i have no idea what he could be. he’s 2, 3 years away and who knows what will happen. if you can trade gomez and humber for garza do it. no question. but milledge for blanton is a joke. blanton is nothing more than a slightly improved version of bobby jones

  60. PittsburghMet says:

Way to go Omar on Estrada. I was thinking Omar was watching too much TVLand.

I do think that Santana will not go this off-season unless someone puts up very good package, which would need to include a front-line starter, aka Maine, which I don’t think we should do.

As a result, I believe the Twins will hold on to him for the mid-season “free-agent-to-be” rental market and hope a desperate team steps up to the plate.

  61. steve333 says:

It doesnt take much to make you guys happy. Im glad he got rid of Mota but we would have been betterr off if he re-signed LoDuca or signed Barrett and just dumped Mota.
This guy threw out SEVEN percent of runners. My mother could do better than that.

I hope your mother isn’t injured like Estrada was.

      you should try it

  62. neiljphx says:

well, they didn’t like him in ARI or MIL. sure hope the chemistry is better here. the price sure was right

  63. kevinmets31 says:

I love this trade… yeah Estrada is no Russ Martin but getting rid of Mota and landing a switch hitting catcher like Estrada without tapping the piggy bank AWESOME smart trade

  64. supermannino says:

    I found this ironic…

    http://www.sportszillablog.com/2007/10/the_2007_nl_homer_bush_awards_1.htm

Estrada’s OPS was worse than Lo Duca’s.

    Geez.

I’m hoping that his injury had something to do with that.

For those of you who won’t follow the link, here’s the relevant excerpt:

“I was shocked to see there was in fact, a catcher even less valuable than LoDuca this year. Then I was even more surprised to learn there was yet ANOTHER catcher worse. The former would be Mr. Estrada, who is the first on our list to post a sub .300 OBP. Milwaukee isn’t the greatest hitter’s park, but it’s better than Shea Stadium, and that walk rate would be inexcusable at Coors Field anyway. Estrada is another catcher not known for his defense and was also, like Lo Duca, part of a team that fell apart miserably down the stretch and failed to make the playoffs.

Why he got 442 AB, (Lo Duca had 445) I have no idea. Don’t Ned Yost and Willie Randolph realize that mediocre defensive catchers who can’t get on base are not very valuable at all?”

  65. Broadway Joe says:

omar a genius ??!!! what the hell … we have 3 catchers and no starting pitcher in the rotation ….hmmmmm???? thats a real genius after saying that the rotation and the bullpen are going to be top priority this offs season he has not done much for the rotation or bullpen now has he now you have 2 catchers who are average and a less than average catcher and noooooooooooooo dammmmmmmmmm armmmmmmmmmmss if we are not getting pitchers what the hell are we doing… ok grant we had to fill up some gaps in second and at catcher we got our second basemen and i think i can only think we have enough catchers this year so whats going on with two starters… give me a big time ace in the 1 spot and give me a guy like silva or blanton in the second spot i think it time for us to give up some big prospects for santana and give up some big cash for harden or blanton

Holy crap – we got a LH hitting catcher who makes a perfect platoon partner for Castro AND dumped Mota in the SAME DEAL? Did Omar spike Melvin’s coffee with a date rape drug?

Are you kidding me?! Is it possible to grade a trade higher than an “A+” ? Wow. Not that Estrada is a great player or anything, but just to get a catcher in this market …. for MOTA. Wow.

    Great job, Omar.
