The National League’s MVP will be named at 2 pm this afternoon.
Ballots were due to the Baseball Writers Association of America at the end of the regular season.
…i have talked with a lot of writers who were able to
vote, and not one person mentioned David Wright…so, the odds are good that either Matt Holliday, Jimmy Rollins or Price Fielder will win, which, by the way, is great for baseball…that’s a nice, young group of talent that will be around for a long, long time, including wright…
…i would have voted for holliday, because, in addition to winning a batting title, and leading the league in RBI, hits and doubles, he also hit .450 during the last two weeks of the season, helping his team make up a four-game deficit to get in the playoffs…

our 3B didnt get mvp? drite got ripped off.
hey, who won the AL mvp? oh thats right….it was that other bum 3B that the mets took a pass on cuz we dont need his kind on our team.
haha, if holliday doesnt win its a shame. i love dwright, but holliday is an absolute monster and carried that team to the playoffs. wrights time will come.
your name is obviously the opposite of what you are.
The Mets did not take a pass on that other bum…
Obviously he wanted a ridiculous amount of money to leave the Yankees, he didn’t get it…wow, its not like he wants a million a year and the mets said no thanks
Also, you can’t forget Holliday’s slide to win game 163….
Considering he literally was the guy who got them in the postseason, and led 2 of 3 triple crown categories (BA and RBI), combined with the stats down the stretch that you alluded to, you have got to give it to Holliday.
Rollins did have a great year, and was always a leader for their team, but I think that Holliday and the Rockies were able to do was amazing, and should be rewarded…Also my friends that root for the Phillies would never shut up if Rollins won it….And also I hate him.
It would be a crime if Holliday didn’t win it.
you can make a case for holliday and he will probably win, but if he doesnt it will hardly be a ‘crime’
interesting take here: http://vegaswatch.blogspot.com/2007/11/real-mvps-take-3.html
PLEASE dont let it be Rollins…I can’t stand that little punk…
thankfully he isnt THAT young at 29 and hopefully wont be around for too long…
Matt Holliday deserves this, no doubt in my mind….if he doesn’t win I will be shocked…
Ohh..and another wrote on Rollins…if anyone seriously thinks this guy is a 30 HR type player they are crazy…..guarantee that if his home park is Shea the guy barely hits 20 HRs….
CBP is a joke….18 of his 30 HRs were hit there….
Ohh..and another note on Rollins…if anyone seriously thinks this guy is a 30 HR type player they are crazy…..guarantee that if his home park is Shea the guy barely hits 20 HRs….
CBP is a joke….18 of his 30 HRs were hit there….
sorry for the double post….anyone else noticing the site is going REALLY slowly this week??
Y-y-e-e-s-s. I-I-’-v-v-e-e n-n-o-o-t-t-i-i-c-c-e-e-d-d.
David Wright actually deserves it more than anyone. He plays a more important position than Holliday and in a MUCH tougher park for hitters. His SB rate is amazing. Plus, his defense is well-respected (and seemingly overrated). He also “carried” his team down the stretch – check his September numbers…the rest of the team wasn’t up to the task.
After Wright, though, I’d give it to Holliday. Rollins would be an absolute joke – he’s not the most valuable player on his own team – Utley is – but that didn’t stop Justin Morneau from winning the MVP.
Jimmy Rollins will win this. It’s in the bag. And it’s deserved.
i really think holliday deserves it.
When will you admit your not really a mets fan? lol
I don’t think it’s as deserved as you might think. Really, he’s benefiting from the fact that Utley was hurt for a month. Anyone who pays even modest attention to the Phillies knows that Utley is the engine that drives the team. Howard also has been all but forgotten, but he still drove in a ton of runs. Rowand also managed a career year. Rollins had plenty of help. (His defense really seemed to improve, though, which is strange — although the 30 HR won him the Gold Glove.) Take Rollins off the Phillies and I don’t think they tank. Remove Holliday from the Rockies and they’re nothing. And re: park effects, his power was all at CBP. Give him similar numbers but 15 HR instead of 30, and — justified or not — he’s not in the MVP conversation.
Oh — and here’s the one time I love statheads — my enemy’s enemy:
John (Washington DC): Rob, can you explain to the viewers yours, and Keith Law’s, complete love for the NY Mets? David Wright is “NOT” better than Chipper Jones. The award he was GIVEN was the gold glove…has NOTHING TO DO WITH OFFENSE. He’s a good ball player, but come on. He is being punished because his team will be known this past season as the ultimate chokers? Give me a break. He was nowhere near as VALUABLE as Rollins or Holliday.
Rob Neyer: (12:53 PM ET ) John, EVERY non-traditional measure of offense and EVERY non-traditional measure of defense suggest that Wright was better than Jones in both phases of the game. You’re ignoring park effects in your “analysis,” which is okay because you don’t get to vote for anything. But it’s a shame that many of the actual voters share your awareness.
Incidentally, Neyer and Law picked Wright as their choice for MVP. Most of the dweebs picked Rollins.
Wright deserves it; he nearly managed to carry his team to the playoffs despite practically every other Met underperforming brutally. He put up huge numbers in a pitcher’s park and is a key defensive player.
Holliday or Rollins will win because of their teams’ Septembers, and that’s fine, but I’ve always found the idea that the MVP should go to a guy on a playoff team silly.
Matt, I know you wrote that you haven’t talked to a Writer who mentioned Wright yet…but here
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3106401
It shows that noone there thought of fielder…
interesting none the less
I know a guy, who knows a guy, that knows a guy, that knows another guy… that told me who it is. It ain’t a Met, is all I’m saying.
I love how the MVP award has been reduced to simply whoever was the hottest down the stretch for a playoff team.
