I don't think it's as deserved as you might think. Really, he's benefiting from the fact that Utley was hurt for a month. Anyone who pays even modest attention to the Phillies knows that Utley is the engine that drives the team. Howard also has been all but forgotten, but he still drove in a ton of runs. Rowand also managed a career year. Rollins had plenty of help. (His defense really seemed to improve, though, which is strange -- although the 30 HR won him the Gold Glove.) Take Rollins off the Phillies and I don't think they tank. Remove Holliday from the Rockies and they're nothing. And re: park effects, his power was all at CBP. Give him similar numbers but 15 HR instead of 30, and -- justified or not -- he's not in the MVP conversation.

Oh -- and here's the one time I love statheads -- my enemy's enemy:

John (Washington DC): Rob, can you explain to the viewers yours, and Keith Law's, complete love for the NY Mets? David Wright is "NOT" better than Chipper Jones. The award he was GIVEN was the gold glove...has NOTHING TO DO WITH OFFENSE. He's a good ball player, but come on. He is being punished because his team will be known this past season as the ultimate chokers? Give me a break. He was nowhere near as VALUABLE as Rollins or Holliday.

Rob Neyer: (12:53 PM ET ) John, EVERY non-traditional measure of offense and EVERY non-traditional measure of defense suggest that Wright was better than Jones in both phases of the game. You're ignoring park effects in your "analysis," which is okay because you don't get to vote for anything. But it's a shame that many of the actual voters share your awareness.

Incidentally, Neyer and Law picked Wright as their choice for MVP. Most of the dweebs picked Rollins.

I love how the MVP award has been reduced to simply whoever was the hottest down the stretch for a playoff team.

your name is obviously the opposite of what you are.

The Mets did not take a pass on that other bum...
Obviously he wanted a ridiculous amount of money to leave the Yankees, he didn't get it...wow, its not like he wants a million a year and the mets said no thanks

Wright deserves it; he nearly managed to carry his team to the playoffs despite practically every other Met underperforming brutally. He put up huge numbers in a pitcher's park and is a key defensive player.

Holliday or Rollins will win because of their teams' Septembers, and that's fine, but I've always found the idea that the MVP should go to a guy on a playoff team silly.
