Quote: Do Something Big
By D.J. Short - Nov 20, 2007 8:12 pm

During his weekly appearance on WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog program, SI.com’s Jon Heyman had the following to say….

“The main thing for the Mets right now is that they need to do something big. They can’t come back with basically the same team they had. They gotta save their chips and try to make a run at Santana, long shot that it may be.”

…heyman cited this line of thinking when relaying Omar Minaya’s reluctance to include Lastings Milledge as part of a package for Brian Schneider and Ryan Church of the nationals…with today’s acquisition of Johnny Estrada, the need for a catcher appears to have been filled, but the important thing to take from the trade is that minaya did not have to part with a valuable prospect to pull it off…

To listen to Heyman’s entire segment, during which he also discusses the Luis Castillo signing, the NL MVP award and assorted off-season news, go to WFAN.com.

I hate to hear things like this. Of course, I want the Mets to get a genuine, ace. But I don’t need them to do “something big” just for the sake of it.

    • dk70 says:

I get the feeling that Omar will be inclined to make a blockbuster after the end of ‘07. Lets just hope that it is a good one, not one where we end up sending Reyes or Wright…..I could take moving Beltran, if it was the right move and it was done before Hunter and Jones are off the market.

  2. darkstar73 says:

agreed, this thinking is stupid. Like anyone, I want pitching, but I want the deal to be smart, not big for the sake of being big.

    • christian warrior says:

I don’t think this type of thinking is really that stupid. If you think about it, any move you make in this market that lands you a pitcher of any type of consequence is going to be categorized as “something big”.

      • darkstar73 says:

you’re right, its true, I just like thinking about as that being the result, not the reason

  3. Aussie-Met says:

The amazing thing about this Estrada-Mota deal is that, despite the tens of thousands of words written and uttered by the newspapers, bloggers and other pundits, NO ONE ever mentioned Mota’s name as a trade chip and very few mentioned Estrada as a serious option.

Once again Omar does a deal on the sly.

    • jerseymetsfan says:

I starting the climb off omar’s if he continues w/ moves like this one. he filled two needs w/ this trade, 1 getting a C & 2 getting rid of the mistake he made last offseason by signing mota. I can’t belive the brewers took him. Now, don’t overpay and make a big move to make a big move if doesn’t make sense. Haren will cost much less than Johan and is only shade below him.
      Please get Haren.

      • Nails says:

I actually think Haren might cost more, esp. b/c you have to deal with Beane, b/c you whoever would get him would have him for the 3 arbitration years instead of hoping to sign Johan before FA.

Or at least, if I were Beane, I’d spin it that way.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Yeah, and did I mention that Haren is basically John Maine?
          Column 1: Maine
          Column 2: Haren

          First MLB Season

          WL: 2-3 3-7
          ERA: 6.30 5.08
          K/BB: 24/24 43/22

          Second:

          6-5 3-3
          3.90 4.50
          71/33 32/17

          Third:

          15-10 14-12
          3.91 4.12
          180/75 163/53

I think giving up anything significant for Haren is a waste.

Haren is also overrated in that his second half ERA was 4.15 and he has struggled to remain consistant overa full season.

        • bluNoway2go says:

Realistically, Haren seems the most plausible than Johan. If not for the sake of competition, but rather for contending. Oakland will not be contending next year, they are obviously in the rebuilding stage. Haren has had is fair share of injuries therefore, his value is lowered . While, Johan’s ceiling is still high and considered the best pitcher in baseball. In order to get the best pitcher, one must deplete a lot of prospects and major league ready players. I’ll be more than satisfied with Haren.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Realistically, Billy Beane said that he would not deal Blanton or Haren.

He clearly and literally stated that he is not rebuilfing his team, and with a low budget, the motto for rebuilding is “All or Nothing.”

Haren is not a realistic possibility. Neither is Bedard, Santana (either one) or Livan.

It really comes down to Silva and Garza in the end, and Minaya has seemingly said nothing publicly about Garza.

        • darkstar73 says:

what does Minaya saying something publicly about a player have to do with anything? Just look at this last deal, if anything, Omar makes moves that no one expects. Did Estrada get mentioned once?

  4. matt says:

a trade for santana would be nice. Trade the farm for him!!!! Heilman, Gomez, FMart, and Humber!

    Global New York Mets

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Please. The farm wouldn’t even be enough.

It was specified by many officials involved with the Twins. Some say it will take David Wright and Fernando Martinez and Pelfrey and more. It really isn’t realistic whatsoever. The only interested team with a chance are the Yankees.

The Dodgers have talked to the Orioles about Bedard, and a deal may include Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp and more. The Yankees have a brittle rotation with the tools like Hughes, Sanchez, Horne, Cano, Cabrera, etc. to land Santana.

Leave your dreams behind, my friend. The only realistic thing is to sign Silva or Livan or trade for Garza.

  5. icedrake523 says:

They do need to do something big and that something big has to be getting an ace. I don’t buy this “The Mets need to do something big so they get the back page” BS. They couldn’t care less about that. But they need to get an ace (ie Santana). They can’t go into next season with Pedro as their best pitcher.

    • darkstar73 says:

to get Santana, other teams basically need to balk at the Twins asking price and they need to be more than willing to move him. I do’nt like the idea of trading Fernando Martinez, for anyone, so hold onto him, and if Milledge is traded, we need a starting RF, because i’m not sure Gomez is ready and Endy is a backup. So that limits things, but if you can get a window with Santana and you can make the trade, that significantly changes the balance of power in the NL East by leaps and bounds. They’ll probably want heilman, and I suppose that’s something you have to sacrafice, it would just hurt the bullpen a bunch.

      • icedrake523 says:

The Angels are probably out since they got Garland (their rotation was already good). The Dodgers seem to be targeting Erik Bedard more than Johan Santana. The Yankees are a possibility but they seem to adamant in not trading Phil Hughes, Jabba the Hutt, or Ian Kennedy.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

They seem adament in not trading any other their young starters for Miguel Cabrera. That is all that they said. The Yankees would certainly give up one of their stud pitching prospects for Santana.

    • christian warrior says:

I agree with you essentially, but you are wrong if you really think that the Mets don’t care about getting onto the back pages of the NY papers. Of course they do. Especially with the way that the cross towners have been dominating the courts of public opinion lately.

The Mets have pretty much crawled into their shell since the collapse, and I am sure that they wouldn’t mind some positive publicity.

  6. loopenark says:

A lot of teams would kill for Pedro as their best pitcher. Look what he did in limited outings last year. This year he will be healthier and stronger. I’ll take him as number one for 08.

  7. squad says:

Honestly, I don’t want Santana. Granted, it would be great to have him, but I would prefer someone younger, like Haren, Peavy, or Bedard. This way, we’re getting pitchers on the rise, not the decline.

Not to mention Santana will cost us a ton, when we could just sign him next year. People love to mention the Red Sox, and how they landed Beckett. Sure they traded Ramirez, but they also had Papelbon, Ellsbury, Bucholz, Lester, Youkilis, Pedroia, and Delcarmen as young players waiting in the wings to help out the big club. Not to mention guys they still have tucked away in the minors. Their farm system is loaded.

I don’t feel like the Mets have the same kind of depth, and I don’t want to wipe out the farm for one guy who may or may not resign, may or may not like NYC, and is has had injuries in the past.

I’m in this for the long haul. I’ve waited for this team to build a solid franchise that competes every year. There is no need to make a drastic move. This is a solid team with a bright future. We have a new stadium opening in 2009, and we’ll always be able to supplement through free agency.

I would much prefer Omar to make minor moves like this Estrada deal, which reminds me a lot of the El Duque trade. Then, if a really great comes along, sure, part with some of the kids, but don’t do it for one player… especially one who pitches once every 5 games.

    • christian warrior says:

I don’t like Peavy personally. To me he looks like arm surgery waiting to happen.

    • metsfreek3 says:

Bedard and Santana are almost the same age. Either one would be great dont be picky :p

      • christian warrior says:

Sure, either one would be great but there is an awful lot to be picky about.

Bedard would come at a little bit cheaper than Santana would, and he is not nearly as good as Johan.

        • PDubs says:

How is Bedard not nearly as good as Johan??? I’d take Bedard OVER Johan. Bedard was simply dominant over a three month stretch last year.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

honestly the difference between bedard santana and peavy is so minimal. all are dominant, all can go all 9 innings, all can strike out 15 on any given night, all can take over a game and shutdown a team (i heard thats good in the playoffs)….we are splitting hairs here people, an ace is an ace is an ace.

        • darkstar73 says:

3 months? That’s what you’re going on? C’mon, Santana has been dominant for YEARS…this past year was a hiccup and he still had a 1.07 whip. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have Bedard, but he’s not Santana. There’s a difference between a pitcher who has figured out how to be dominant year in and year out then a pitcher who was dominant for a period of time during a given season.

  8. BSMITTYFDNY says:

IF WE TRADE THE FARM FOR SANTANA IT ONLY HAPPENS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING WE SIGN HIM LONG TERM. I DONT AGREE THAT OUR PROSPECTS ARENT AS GOOD AS OTHER TEAMS SUCH AS YANKS, ANGELS, ETC. OUR PROSPECTS ARE VERY GOOD JUST NOT AS HYPED AS HUGHES OR CHAMBERLAIN.

  9. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Sorry for the CAPS post. My bad.

  10. robmenna says:

Don’t like Santana, don’t like Peavy. Lets just do away with the Cy Young award and get Kris Benson back.

  11. nagel100 says:

Mets will be picked to win the NL if they acquire Santana or Haren.

  12. Kue88 says:

Trade Millage, Heilman and Pelfrey for Haren then trade Gomez and Humber to the twins for Garza. Haren, Pedro, Maine, Ollie and Garza now were talkin!

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Yeah, especially after Billy Beane said that he wouldn’t trade Haren or Blanton, and that Pelfrey has little to no trade value.

And of course, the Twins would rather have Gomez and Humber than Delmon Young. Add Gotay to the deal and then we’re talking.

      • Kue88 says:

Fine throw in Gotay. If we could go foward with Haren, Garza, Maine and Ollie as our starters along with Wright Reyes Beltran I think thats a great core to build on.

  13. robmenna says:

And then sign Santana to replace Pedro.

    • christian warrior says:

In order for the Mets to sign Santana after the 2008 season, we would probably have to pray that he doesn’t get traded before then. What team in their right mind is going to pay the price that it appears the Twins will be asking for Santana without first getting a shot to sign him to an extension?

Someone will pay the price to get Santana, I’m sure. But without a window to try and sign him to an extension? I’m not so sure.

  14. Mets24 says:

Don’t get too excited guys…..Omar just signed Julio Franco
    http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_76998.asp

    good job, Omar…

  15. beef says:

I tihnk i have a trade that would be fair for both the twins and mets, the mets send beltran, main, gomez and gotay and some cash to the twins for santana and garza and maybe a b-level prospect.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Yeah. I’m sure the Mets want to pay $80 million over the 4 years for a player that’s on the Twins, and also give away a great pitcher for Garza, 1 year of Santana and maybe a B level prospect. I’m sure our lineup would be great with Alou as our fourth hitter and Delgado fifth.

For God’s sake, get a brain,

    • sylvan says:

This deal would be a steal for the Twins. I think you undervalue Beltran and Maine. Beltran alone is far more valuable than a one-year rental of Santana.

    • Innis_2_winnis says:

Beef? This sounds more like MAD COW. It shames me that we root for the same team.

  16. beef says:

and what are they paying beltran? nothing, how do you expect to get a top level pitcher without paying him big money.

  17. BSMITTYFDNY says:

That is way too much to give up for Santana and Garza. I wouldnt include Maine in any deal unless its him and only one of our OF prospects for Santana and we get him to sign before deal completed. Maine and Milledge? Maine and Gomez? Those two for Santana would be fair in my eyes. Maine is very, very good and I dont think Hughes or Chamberlian with Melky Cabrera is a better offer than that. Maine is in his prime, proven and cheap while Hughes and Chamberlian are young as well but unproven. I know my thinking will be the minority but its how I feel. Otherwise I would just rather trade Gomez + for Garza and then sign Linebrink and Riske for the pen. Our team would then be set.

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

You just gave several good reasons why trading Maine for Santana would be a horrible idea…and endorsed it at the same time.

      Wierd.

    • christian warrior says:

While I agree that Maine is a very good commodity, I think that the Twins would value a package of Chamberlain or Hughes along with Melky more than a package of Maine with Gomez
