Rob Neyer of ESPN.com makes a strong case for why he believes 3B David Wright should be the 2007 National League MVP.
He says, “It doesn’t bother me that Jimmy Rollins won the NL MVP Award … What bothers me is the utter lack of consistency from year to year … So if you don’t have to play for a playoff team, what’s wrong with David Wright, exactly?”
In 2006, 1B Ryan Howard was crowned the NL MVP, but he missed the playoffs just like Wright did in 2007.
Neyer argues that the Mets collapse should not be held against Wright as he batted .352 in September and scored 48 runs in 54 games from August 2nd through the end of the season.
He also points out that Wright led the NL in a very overlooked statistical category – times on base with 297.
…neyer makes a very strong case for d-wright…however, i hate to admit it, but i think the voters are correct…both wright and rollins had great numbers across the board plus a gold glove each, however it is obvious the Mets late season collapse played heavy on the minds of the voters even though neyer disagrees with that thinking…

This is only the beginning of a long and beautiful career for young Mr. Wright. He is on top of the world. He is Jeter like mythic figure of the late 1990’s……
Wright WILL win an MVP or MVP’s in his career. This year it went to Rollins who deserved it more. It is fair. Wright will be fine.
If you’re on an also ran, you need to lead the league in one of the triple crown categories, not in ‘overlooked’ categories that are never really talked about.
I don’t have a major problem with Rollins getting it. I just think Wright was more deserving. He’ll win it sometime soon.
Still think Holliday should have won…What case can you make for Rollins that you can’t for Holliday? Plus Matt had topped him in every statistical category (including defensive)
You could say that Rollins’ prediction played into it, but how about the fact that the regular season ended with Matt Holliday lying on home plate with a busted chin, having just scored the run which gave the Rockies the WC?
Including defense? Rollins plays SS and Holliday is a left fielder.
“Holliday, …had…better defensive [statistics] (10 Fielding Runs Above Average versus eight for Rollins, +9 in John Dewan’s Plus/Minus system to Rollins’ +7) statistics than Rollins did. All of those numbers account for position and park”

I see what you’re saying but it’s ridiculous to compare the Gold Glove winning shortstop to a good left fielder. Defensively it’s apples and oranges, man.
“What case can you make for Rollins that you can’t for Holliday?”
Defense? Holliday had an atrocious, possibly season-ending play in LF in that very same game.
Holliday’s Home/Away splits were much farther apart than Rollins’ as well. If you compare solely their away numbers, they are much more similar offensively.
You can obviously make the case for either player, but I don’t think Holliday’s victory is as clearcut as some are suggesting?
The greatest position player in franchise history will not have a problem swaying voters in the coming years. I wouldn’t worry about this one at all.
Holliday should be MVP, and anyone referring to the number of runs Rollins scored should be fired (.344 OBP FOR AN MVP? DON’T THINK SO).
Rob Neyer, as always, isn’t watching the games, he’s watching the stats. And stats do not tell the whole story.
Watch baseball with your eyes sometime, Rob.
how many phillies games have you seen this year in which they weren’t playing the mets? i probably only saw a handful, playing the braves on tbs or playing on fox and espn. that leaves over 100 phillies games i missed, and i’d be willing to bet everybody in the country outside philly missed. maybe we can even throw in the baseball tonight highlight reels too. that really helps.
you NEED numbers and stats because no one can process 700 plate appearances for player, much less an entire team’s players, much less a guy trying to cover an entire league.
you’re not really going by your eyes, and if you are that’s too small a sample size. you’re going by stories from dumb broadcasters and hack journalists which are completely unreliable sources. maybe you’re also looking at the standings, which tell you exactly nothing about a player’s individual performance.
people talk about how arrogant statheads get, but it’s so much more arrogant to hear somebody act like they can get a superior grasp on an entire season of baseball without looking at numbers.
in the end, who cares? it has been 20 years (gibson, 1988) since an mvp won the world series. you’re better off having a strong enough team that your players split the vote.
well said…david wright had a phenomenal season for us one of the best ever by a met, but look at 06, no one had a shot of winning the mvp from the mets bc between wright delgado beltran and reyes they were all great. Im hoping for more seasons like that rather than having to rely on one guy to carry us bc as we saw this year as great as david was down the stretch one man cant do it all.
The same exact argument holds for why Rollins shouldn’t have won it this year. Every hear of the guys named Howard, Utley, Burrell, and Rowand?
MVP’s don’t forget to step on third for force outs in crucial games.
You ARE kidding, right? If you’re logic was the case then only errorless players would be eligible for the MVP. Not saying that wasn’t a huge mistake on Wright’s part but you can’t judge his whole season based on one play. That’s just ridiculous.
Ugh..make that YOUR, not you’re
what about Wright’s rally killing DP’s down the stretch….
Were they really thinking about moving this guy to bring in Pay-Rod? I’ll take D Wright any day of the week, and twice on Sundays…if Willie isn’t resting him with the rest of the starters
YOU MUST READ THIS:
This is unbelievable crap. I took a look at the MVP candidates that finished in the top four (Rollins, Holliday, Fielder, and Wright) and their supporting casts (the top four players on each team in RBIs. This is astounding.
Rollins had Utley and Howard, Rowand and Burrell.
Utley: .322 | 22 | 103
Howard: .268 | 40 | 136
Rowand: .256 | 30 | 97
Burrell: .309 | 27 | 89
Rollins: .296 | 30 | 94
Matt Holliday’s supporting cast? Same thing. Everyone hit from Tulowitzki and Hawpe, to Adkins and Helton:
Tulowitzki: .291 | 24 | 99
Hawpe: .291 | 29 | 116
Adkins: .301 | 25 | 111
Helton: .320 | 17 | 91
Holliday: .340 | 36 | 137
So, what about Prince Fielder? Not so good here, he definitely carried his team. But, it finished out of the playoffs by a decent margin and was only 4 games over .500.
Braun: .324 | 34 | 97
Hardy: .277 | 26 | 80
Hart: .295 | 24 | 81
Jenkins: .255 | 21 | 64
Fielder: .288 | 50 | 119
Finally, David Wright, who with the exception of Beltran was basically on his own all year on a team that finished 14 games over .500.
Beltran: .276 | 33 | 112
Delgado: .258 | 24 | 87
Reyes: .280 | 12 | 57
Lo Duca: .272 | 9 | 54
Wright: .325 | 30 | 107
I mean, this is a complete travesty. How in the world can the voters justify Rollins? Based on the supporting cast of the top four finishers, Rollins should have finished fourth, Holliday third, Fielder second, and Wright first.
The numbers don’t lie – only the voters do.
take off the blue and orange blinders, dude….
i am just so damn surpised by your comment. what the hell is wrong with people. it’s a most VALUABLE award. how can rollins be most valuable to his team with FOUR (4) other guys on the team accounting for 400+ RBIs? He was but a mere cog – perhaps the straw that stirred the drink. But, MVP of the NL? No.
Jesus Christ give J-Roll a break its not his fault he had players around him the only difference is Jimmy Rollins hit LEAD OFF for over 130 games. so therefore when u see 90 RBI’s that means he was driving runs in with 1 or 2 outs. He was more clutch then any of these guys with the exception of Holliday quit bitching with this is the biggest travesty ever boo hoo hoo they are two different players in two different roles on their team and J-Roll was also a 20 20 20 20 yes thats 20 doubles 20 triples 20 homers and 20 steals not to mention the 90 RBI’s as A LEAD OFF HITTER. Mets collapsed Phillies took advantage J-Roll was the most consistent and valuable player to his team. Had Utley not gotten hurt we dont even have this conversation.
werd
Yeah not stepping on third is definately a reason not to win MVP. No MVP has every made a mental error in a game before. No way. Why don’t they ask for IQ tests before leaving a comment here?
You can give it to any of the three and its hard to argue. But Rollins team won the division so I can’t go crazy over it. I think Holliday was better but what can you do. Rollins got a lot more press down the stretch and that momentum many times carries a guy over the hump. You didn’t see a lot of Baseball Tonight mini-stories on Holliday like you did for Rollins. My issue is how Fielder got ahead of Wright. They’re collapse might not have been historic but it last longer. They collapses slowly from about the All-Star break till the end.
Yeah! That will show him!
You sir are an embarrassment to Mets fans and baseball in general.
you stay classy, johnnyrotton!
Johnny…..you are rotton.
