the buzz around baseball suggests that Japanese free-agent OF Kosuke Fukudome is seeking at least a three-year, $30 million contract to switch from his home country to Major League Baseball…

According to past reports, the Giants, as well as the Padres, Rangers and Cubs, have all shown interest in Fokudome, as have teams in Japan.

Earlier this month, at Dugout Central, Dugout Scout gave a detailed, first-hand scouting report of Fukudome, writing…

“He is capable of playing center field and right field…capable of hitting in the middle of the batting order or in the number two spot…could bat fifth in the line-up for 11 of the 30 teams. He projects to the following: .265 AVG, .380 OBP, 20–30 HR, 80–100 RBI and 10 SB.”

For more on Fukudome, check out his profile page at Armchair GM, complete with a collection of video.

meh. I don’t see a need to spend money on a maybe when we already have a probably in RF.

genius November 21, 2007 at 12:22 pm

what the fukodome whould we need this guy for? save the money for miggy

gomets2008 November 21, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Miggy?? No …you mean Millzy!! Give this kid the starting job now..so he can mentally prepare..he is a stelar defender , and his bat will improve. Focus on pitching pitching pitching…and an upgrade over Estrada.

NYMetz6986 November 21, 2007 at 12:36 pm

i would def give the right field job to milledge but first and foremost we need an ace and if milledge has to be included so be it…and milledge isn’t exactly a stellar defender…hes good i guess…but he also gets a terrible jump on balls.

TilMetsDoUsPart November 22, 2007 at 1:51 pm

What “ace?”

Bedard? The Dodgers are talking to the O’s… About Bedard and Kemp. And possibly even Clayton Kershaw.

Kemp & Kershaw > Milledge & Pelfrey

Haren? Not even available.

Johan? Many GMs believe that he won’t be traded this offseason. Plus, the Yankees probably have a better offer than us.

Cabrera & Hughes > Milledge & Pelfrey

Lincecum? If you know 1 thing about Brian Sabean is that he likes proven players. Not prospects.

Garza is available. Let’s keep it simple and get him for Gomez, Gotay and Humber, sign Miguel Cairo and end this off-season quickly.

The upgrade over Estrada isn’t happening, but Milledge playing full-time in RF should be. Hopefully, Fred and Omar can forgive the kid for having some passion and enthusiasm while playing, instead of the brand of “we’re bored” choking Willy-ball they like.

toomanyuniforms November 21, 2007 at 12:56 pm

The whole point is that pitching, pitching, pitching probably means trading Milledge, trading Milledge, trading Milledge. . . though it may be the case that the Mets are the only team that likes him more than Gomez.

bonatom November 21, 2007 at 12:57 pm

I would give it to Milledge in a heartbeat… however I very much doubt he will be on the Mets come opening day.. He always the first Mentioned in ANY trade Deal, wheater is before a Pitcher (Santanta, Haren, Blanton, etc) or a R Hernandez

genius November 21, 2007 at 12:34 pm

put thrill in cf. trade beltran for an ace

UpperDeck4Life November 21, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Genius? Is that like when they call big guys “tiny”? Pass on KFuk. Focus on pitching! We could use one more bat, but it would have to be a pretty heavy hitter…

NYMetz6986 November 21, 2007 at 12:38 pm

what ace are you getting for beltran…the three potentially on the market in haren, bedard, and santana are all on the market bc the teams cant afford them so they would be able to afford beltran…and if you wanna throw in oswalt i think the astros would have signed beltran if they could have afforded him.

ReyesRocks November 21, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Do you even know what a NO TRADE CLAUSE is?

metsaholic November 21, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Why would you trade Beltran anyway? He’s at the heart of this team for a lest the next 4 years. I don’t get it.

dk70 November 21, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Heart????? He is one of the top defendered and has a good bat. Clutch? NO. Heart/Leader? No

Peter November 21, 2007 at 12:51 pm

I think he’s a good replacement for Milledge assuming Milledge goes for pitching.

If we can get pitching without moving Lastings I’m all for it (Garza for Gomez would be nice) but realistically, I expect him to be dealt in the offseason. We’ll miss him, because I think he can play, and at a high level, but if it gains us stability in the rotation in a #2 way or better, you have to do it. Fukudome would pay his own salary in opening up the Japanese market for the Mets and I think would match Milledge production-wise.

toomanyuniforms November 21, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Who are penciling in to play left, again? Alou? Well, we’ll need 81 games from somebody. . . .

If we’re talking about spending this much, I’d rather have Rowand, but I agree that Fukudome has a better chance of driving in 100 this year than Milledge.

Haven’t we heard all of that stuff about “opening up the Japanese market” before?

BlueandOrangeTears November 21, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I’m sorry. I know this not the place for this and God knows I tried to resist but that name is just too hilarious. fok u do me, fok u do me, fok u do me, FOK U DO ME!!!, FOK U DO ME!!!, there, I let it out.

Do the Mets have any interest in this guy? Has anyone heard anything about Shawn Green? Does Lastings have the job secured?

FOKUDOME!!!!!

bonatom November 21, 2007 at 1:04 pm

I don’t care if this guy can even play baseball… it would be worth $10 Mill a year, just to chant his name at Shea!!

adropofvenom November 21, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Rumor has it that he’s going to put Kosuke (Like Ichiro does) on his jersey thanks to Alex Ochoa letting him in about that. Way to ruin the fun.

dk70 November 21, 2007 at 1:55 pm

Lastings Milledge will be playing OF for the A’s on opening day ;08

mackeysasser2 November 21, 2007 at 12:54 pm

very milledge like numbers, at 20 times the price, no thanks,.

toomanyuniforms November 21, 2007 at 1:03 pm

I think we’re jumping the gun a bit if we’re expecting 20-30 HR and 80-100 RBI from Milledge *next year*.

Agees Catch November 21, 2007 at 1:04 pm

But it does allow you to move miiledge for a pitcher…

keithc November 21, 2007 at 1:22 pm

So he’s older, more expensive Milledge? No thanks.

FBones24 November 21, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Based on these projections he would be an offensive upgrade over Milledge or anyone else we have. I think it is a given that he would be a defensive upgrade as well.

The problem is that these are “projected numbers” based on his performance in Japan. We have seen how these experiments work and they are impossible to predict. I think Mets fans know this better than anyone.

adropofvenom November 21, 2007 at 5:24 pm

The thing is you have to expect Milledge to improve given more time. He’s only got 300 at-bats under his belt for christsakes. You give him 500 at-bats next season and there’s better then a 50/50 chance that he could match the line that Fukudome does.

metawan November 21, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Man, we are grasping at straws here. Much different feeling this off season compared to last years hot stove.
We need pitching and it will cost the Mets dearly, and Iagree that there is almost no chance that Lasting will be a Met come April for that reason.
