The Royals designated 1B Craig Brazell for assignment yesterday.
Brazell was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 1998 draft. In 34 at-bats with the Mets in 2004, he hit .264 with one home run.
…just another example of why i must be cautious when getting too excited about any one prospect…it’s a long, long hike from double-a stardom to long-term success at the major-league level…

The road to third place is paved with future stars… no one should be untouchable.
its funny that brazell and diaz were dfa’s in back to back days being that they came up with the mets at the same time in that september of 2004 i think and both hit hrs in a late september game against the cubs.
Not only did Diaz and Brazell both hit home runs, Diaz hit a 3 run homer with two outs in the 9th, and Brazell hit a walk of homer in the 11th (I think) to take 2 of 3 from the Cubs. It killed Chicago’s momentum and they ended up missing the playoffs. I remember going to the Friday Night game and being surrounded by Cubs fans…and they were obnoxious…and that is my only Craig Brazell story.
I think that is THE only Craig Brazel story.
I’m wondering about this concerning prospects when they come to the Major League level. In a big market are prospects given up on because management does not like what they see? Because they have money to spend? or because there is someone else that can do a better job than them?
I only see a handful of prospects thrive in a big market and given a fair chance. The rest seem to get traded away or dropped from that team.
ya but, the Royals let him go
And that is why you mortgage the farm for Johan.
It is time we stopped day dreaming around here.
If you are going to trade for Santana the package will have to be built around Reyes.
That’s the story, Jerry. And the Twins know it.
Remember, a good trade helps and hurts both sides.
By the way, hope Matt and his team & all you nutty Mets fan bloggers have a wonderful, peaceful, turkey filled holiday!
Go Jets; upset II; the sequeal!
41,
Look at it this way, the Twins have very little leverage in any potential Santana deal. Either Johan exercies his limited no-trade clause or Johan turns down a long term deal which really scraps any megadeal the Twins had on the table.
Essentially that means Reyes or Wright or virtually any other top tier prospect or young star player is likely out of the Twins reach.
What will likely happen, Twins start the year with Johan, if they stumble by June he will be traded, as a rental, for whatever the Twins can get and he will be an unrestricted FA by November 2008. A Met by December 2008
Exactly! The Twins can demand this guy and that guy, but the buyers will dictate whom they give up. The longer the Twins wait, the less they will receive in return.
Actually a good trade helps both teams, period.
No daydreaming here. Teams will not give up studs for Santana. The Yankees are the best at hyping up their prospects. But, we’ll see.
We’re going to have to part ways with perhaps Gomez/FMart, Milledge and a pitcher.
The Mets have a history of drafting 1B’s who are good, but not Major League potential. Brazell, Harper, Huber to name a few, and while Jacobs is a major leaguer, if he wasn’t a Marlin he might not be playing.
None of the other teams involved would offer a starting position player of Reyes’ caliber and neither will the Mets.
If the Twins trade Santana it will be because his contract requirements EXCEED Zito/Zambrano.
That means that the team trading for him (NY, NY, LA, LA) has to be prepared for the largest P contract to date. Think $20M per year for 7 years.
Having been burned before when Omar was on staff (see Hampton), the Mets would want to confirm the numbers before a trade and ensure that the player will sign. No window to talk, no deal.
Exploring Mets history: Seaver had “economic” issues at the time he was traded because Mets management refused to pay him (foolishly).
When the Mets traded the Franchise they received back:
1. A starting MLB #3-4 pitcher
2. A solid (not star) OF prospect at AAA
3. Spare part IF
4. Another “young” player
If this were for Santana the equivilant would be:
1. Perez
2. Gomez or Millege
3. Gotay
4. Humber or Carp (a lower value player if Millege is included)
Hampton wasn’t the player that Seaver was, but he was viewed (and performed) as an Ace and he cost Dotel and Cedeno.
Forget “emptying” the farm. The Mets best chance is to use Perez as bait. Yes, Perez is in his walk year but he will be much easier for the Twins to sign and even if he left, he’d be a high value FA and command a similar replacement package as Santana.
This will hurt both sides as the Mets would be reluctant to move Perez .
Granted.
But with the state of our starting rotation are we in any shape to play this game of showdown; who will blink first; and take a chance of not adding to our starting rotation at all.
“The longer the Twins wait” the less options Omar is left with to make essential additions to starting pitching.
Look no futher back than last year waiting for Zito to sign with us…and waiting….and waiting.
Then should Santana not come to Queens; what have we to show for our off season?
Do you understand my concern? Mets do not have a staff that really allows them to play these games of chicken. They need to make actual, concrete improvements to the rotation before April.
But 41 it’s not up to the Mets or the Twins it’s up to Johan. He has all the leverage in this situation. He can’t be traded without his “consent” (accepting a long term contract before the trade is completed).
Face it, Johan is not being traded this offseason. The Twins already have over $30M invested in 5 players (Nathan, Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Santana) for next season. Why would they dump Johan and write this year off? They are going to try and make one last run with Johan.
So I guess my real question boils down to, who takes the place of Galvine and possible El Duk come April, if we reserve all our “chips” for a possible Santana deal in July?
No offense … but what an ignorant comment. Some folks will take any excuse to bash Steve Phillips. What’s wrong with a fifth-round draft choice who ended up getting a couple of cups of coffee in the big leagues?
speaking of former met gm’s…did anyone see jim duquette on sny stuttering ab how the estrada trade was a good trade for the mets…i wanted to drop kick him through the screen.
I love how everyone bashes Steve Phillips but if it weren’t for him we wouldn’t have had David Wright or Jose Reyes. Kazmir was his draft as well – Duquette is who caused all the trouble. Although Phillip’s Mo Vaughn trade still haunts me.
scouts seem to think they will be…gomez basically is reyes if he can get his avg up a little bit and fmart is still young but ppl seem to drool over this guy for whatever reason…not that i wouldnt package either or both of them in a second for johan but im just saying.
The problem with “good” pitchers is that they pitch .500 and desperately rely on middle relief.
Lest we forget Johan is a stud who will compete for the Cy Young every year. Should I bother mentioning that he’s entering his prime?
I wouldn’t give up Reyes, but if he doesn’t want to hustle, his attitude is cancerous
Package every prospect we have. The time is now, we’re only a few pieces away. FMart, Milledge (another cancer), Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, Pelfrey. Let the Twins pick any three and give them a fourth as a bonus.
i wish it was, but other teams have more attractive prospects.
I’m a lover, not a speller
Stop suckering into the hype for the Yankees untouchables. The 3 guys have talent — and so do hundreds of other minor league players; they’re in the same position we saw a year ago for Pelf, Humber, Milledge, Gomez, etc …. Even Chamberlin had a nice go for a few months — I seem to remember our Joe Smith having an equally impressive run (albeit with less stuff).
Maybe the Twins buy into the hype as well; and/or maybe the Yanks system (which was bone dry 12 months ago) really is now suddenly the second coming. And Maybe the Yanks didn’t just earn the tag as the team of least-likely to have a thing they say taken seriously in the Arod negotiations. And maybe there is a Santa Claus.
Let’s leave it to the experts to figure out the prospects respective worths — and clearly I’m not. I’m not sure I’d even want to trade the farm for Johan — not that he’s not potentially worth it; but there’s something more satisfying and potentially more lasting (and somehow less risky) in my minds about potentially going the Garza way.
But bottom line is Please stop drinking the KoolAid!
drafting is more on the scouts adivising the GM who to take, so give him credit – just not that much credit
he also wanted to trade Wright for Jose Cruz Jr back when he was on Toronto
