Marty Noble at MLB.com provides a great look at Davey Johnson’s nomination for the Hall of Fame, his relationship with former rival and fellow candidate, Whitey Herzog, as well as Johnson’s “outside the box” coaching style, to which he said:
“I wasn’t trying to go against the grain…I was trying to make it easier for my team to win the World Series.”
That was his mission, to make the game easier for his players, “to put them in situations where they can shine,” he used to say. “If you do that, they’ll take care of the winning.”
…i was only four years old in ‘86 so my memories are pretty limited and mostly shaped by the dvds and books – which is why i enjoy articles that look back on the season and its major players. they allow me to remember the championship team during its peak as opposed to when i was coming into my own as a mets fan and they started to decline…
…time to enjoy the holiday and some football, Happy Thanksgiving everyone…

Is it just me, or did Davy Johnson vastly underachieve with his team, and fail to keep them under any kind of control?
There’s no way Davy Johnson should be there before Keith Hernandez.
100% correct. He had a team for the ages. One of the best pitching staffs of the 20th century, a potent, balanced lineup- if he had maintained the slightest bit of control over his players he would have had 3 or 4 rings. I like Davey as an individual, but he shouldn’t even be allowed to VISIT Cooperstown, let alone be entered.
I was 22 when the Mets last won a World Series and my fondest memory is Game 6 of the NLCS against Houston. The whole city was alive with the electricity of the game. On the commute home, the game was into extra innings, the conductors on the subway and the train would call out the score at every stop, or when each half-inning had ended. I raced home to watch the Mets win!! I remember that I felt vindicated after watching the Mets totally screw up the late 70’s and give the Yankess the town. I know a lot of people forget about the utter embarrassment the Yankees had to suffer because they were forced to use Shea for two seasons while they renovated the Bronx. Let’s work on getting it back. Put Davey in the Hall.
ESPNEWS just reported that the Twins will begin shopping Santana.
mets have to blow away the twins so they dont look around too much.
milledge, fmart, gotay, pelfrey, mulvey
if not enough then add heilman or if u can add gomez and heilman and take out milledge would be better.
but mets gotta get the deal done.
santanas agent counteroffered the twins offered by asking 7 years and 130 mil.
thats zito money.
definately worth it so lets get it done omar.
our thanksgiving surprise was mota being traded.
we can have an early christman present.
“milledge, fmart, gotay, pelfrey, mulvey”
Omar might make that deal if he were on a steroid induced rampage. That’s worse than dumb; it’s Benigno dumb.
(Reminds me of that Daily News Live comedy show where special guest star Jim Dukette(sp?) annouced that he would trade Heilman, Milledge, and Pelfrey for one year of Santana (proving that he was in fact Jim Dukette and not an impostor, and Joe Benigno agreed with him wholeheartedly, showing the world why he’s Joe Benigno.)
Just Pelfrey for one year of Santana would border on too much, considering how badly the Twins want to get something for him., and this dude wants us to trade our starting right fielder, 2010’s projected David Wright in left field, and two potential front end starters, each of whom would be held at league minimum, for a Santana who is hovering over 30.
The Twins asked the Yanks for Cano, and the Yanks rightly told them to go jump in a lake. They are trying to pull off the fleece of fools using the allure of Santana; Let’s hope Omar ain’t that fool.
Pedro, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, and Humber should get the job done pitchingwise in ‘08. If a real deal comes our way, and only if, we jump on it.
The Mets won 1 World Series, despite Davey Johnson. they lost in ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, and ‘89 because he was a poor in-game and line-up strategist, and he ran a loose ship, which was not ideal give the need for a disciplinarian with degenerates like Gooden and Strawberry.
No way does he deserve the Hall. But I’d take him over Randolph any day.
Don’t forget that Davey won a WS and had another NL East title with the Mets, and they proceeded to fall apart when he left. He had an NL Central title with the Reds (was also in first in 1994 when the season was cancelled), and the team fell apart after he left. He had a AL East title and a wild card with the Orioles (and maybe more if not for Jeffrey Meier), and the team fell apart after he left. His only unsuccessful stop was the Dodgers, and he went 86-76 his second (and last) year (They subsequently had records of 86-76, 92-70, 85-79, 93-69, and 71-91 under Jim Tracy)
