In his latest installment of “Hot Stove Daily“, Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports takes a close look at the Mets offseason plans.
…aside from the pursuit of a front line starter, the most interesting piece of information dealt with OF Andruw Jones…
Brown writes…
“The Mets also, believe it or not, held broad discussions about Andruw Jones, presumably in case Lastings Milledge and/or Carlos Gomez must be included for a frontline starter. That seems like a longshot.”
…this confirms how serious the mets are about acquiring a front of the rotation starter via trade, as they’re already looking at potential replacements for players they think they’ll have to part with. i like that they’re looking at the big picture and don’t just have tunnel vision in attempting to acquire a starter, but i’m not ready to go crazy discussing andruw jones or other options until we see what it takes to upgrade the rotation…

Great, he can take Glavine the Rat’s place, spying on us for the Brovos!
More likely a replacement for Beltran’ cause I’m tellin’ ya; you’ll need to offer something substancial for Santana.
They ain’t handed him over for Gomez and a George Foreman LowFat Grill, baby!
Interesting thought but remember that Beltran has a full no-trade clause. That was a key condition for him signing with the Mets. Not so say he couldn’t waive it, but Mets are not free to trade him and that would make a trade more complicated.
GEORGE FORMAN LOWFAT GRILL BABY, HAHAHA NICE WORK
i hate to play this card, but i have a real hard time believing a “real” mets fan would want them to sign this fat showboating smirking bastard to finish out his long slow decline in mets colors.
I would rather sign Scrappy Eckstein and drive him to the ball park every morning. Or have my eyes chewed out by squirrels.
Lots of good points fellow bloggers! Perhaps Omar knows exactly what it will take to get Santana, and wants to grab Jones to replace Milledge while he can? If we can get Johan for Milledge Pelfrey and Heilman, and have A. Jones in the outfield, done deal… Agreed the potential for a lefty righty auto out looms with how delgado and jones played last year, but the upside potential, plus having the best pitcher in baseball sounds like a good step toward getting over last year…..
Why Jones.. Better if we get Aarond Rowand.
Jones is the best solution to replace either Beltran or Milledge. I don’t think that we will get Santana. I would like to see Haren for Milledge, Heilman, FMart, Humber. Then sign Jones to replace Milledge.
Pedro, Haren, Maine, OP, Pelfrey.
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Jones
Alou
Delgado
Castro
That is a good team.
Then Gomez replaces Alou in ‘09 and Omar goes guns blazing after Tex.
‘09 line up
Reyes
Gomez
Wright
Beltran
Tex
Jones
Castillo
Castro
Lights out!!!!!
Or the Mets realize that Jones won’t play right field, just hit .222 last year, strikes out a lot and will cost millions of unnecessary dollars and they “settle” for Kosuke Fukudome.
People really just go wild with their imaginations on this site don’t they?
As for pitchers, these are the guys I believe that the Mets will get in realistic order:
A. Joe Blanton
B. Dan Haren
C. Matt Garza
D. Erik Bedard
E. Carlos Silva
F. Livan Hernandez
G. Johan Santana
I agree with your pitching order, but I don’t think that Jones in right is far fetched. Playing RF on a winning team is better than playing CF for a looser. Jones will bounce back and will replace Delgado next year as the scary as hell power hitter in the lineup. Yes he strikes out too much, but I would give it a chance. At least we know what we are getting in Jones. Japanese players are a crap shoot.
The Twins would never take on eltrans salary,
horrible trade!!!!
Beltran would also never go to Minny. The only place I could see him going, if they were interested in dealing him, is to Boston for some of their young pitchers, and then spun-on to the Twins. Possibly LAD, but I think the Mets would rather keep him out of the NL. Imagine a 3-4-5 of Papi, Manny, and Beltran? It is also well known that Boston coveted him more than any team before he was traded from KC to Houston.
I’ve thought about Andruw Jones for a while now, and I still have the same stance. The guy is still fairly young…I say give him a shot. He’s a gold glove outfielder with a big bat. He’s coming off a subpar season but he STILL hit 25 HR! Come on, that was his worst year in a while and he hit 25 HR…that just goes to show you his talent. Sure he strikes out a lot, but I feel like he can still bounce back to his 30+ HR 110+ RBI days. He’s way too good a player to stay down for too long like Manny Ramirez. Mark my words…whatever team ends up with Jones will get great production. Who’s talking about this as a move to help get Santana? Look, we are NOT getting Santana he is just too much for us to get. Period. But we should still go after Jones and move him to LF or RF. Or move Beltran or whatever. Jones is a guy that isn’t nearly done yet, and trust me he will have a comeback year.
This is an interesting thought. But in thw worst case scenario, with Andrew Jones, then the Mets would have 2 Carlos Delgados in the lineup.
Yeah, but at least they’ll be righty/lefty.
: -)
Jones will have a bounce back year, especially playing in RF. Less wear and tear. I think he was lifeless playing in Atlanta, going nowhere.
Delgado is going to have a monster walk year. This time next year we are all going to be calling for Omar to sign him to a two year deal.
Or he signs to a place where he plays centerfield and the team actually wants to sign a hitter to a huge deal.
Not the Mets buddy.
anyone who thinks that this is the REAL Andruw Jones, or that since he hit .230 this year he’s finished, or that this .230 average now means he will never hit above .240 again, is SADLY mistaken. To say that Andruw still isn’t one of the best players in the game is stupid. He’s still young, plays great D, has power, and can still drive in runs. If you’ve seen me post before, you know i’m a HUGE L-Millz fan and DO NOT want to see him go. However, if it means that Jones comes in and takes his place, I’m driving Milledge, Gomez, Pelfrey and whoever to the airport for Haren or Santana
I’m telling you guys…he has plenty of great years ahead of him! He’s the sleeper this offseason…let me shift gears a little and compare him to Randy Moss in the NFL. With the Raiders he wasn’t winning much, and his game slacked. People thought he was finished, even though we all knew he could put up big numbers if on a good team. I knew when the Pats got him that he would revive his career and look, he’s better than ever. Obviously the Braves used to be contenders, but they have really declined in the past few seasons. Jones could do extremely well for the Mets and revive his career in New York. Like I always say…sometimes the NY spotlight brings out the best in people (see A-Rod). If Milledge is all he would cost, I’d do it in a heartbeat. We are getting too unrealistic with the pitching. We are going to get Haren or Santana or this guy or that guy. There’s NO GUARANTEE! The probable trade still seems weak for the A’s/Twins. They aren’t stupid…Humber is no Chamberlain and Pelfrey is no Phil Hughes. Gomez is also tended to be overrated, as the NY media can make the most mediocre of players appear even better. Teams know this…what makes you think they will give up their #1 pitcher for a group of guys that haven’t proved a thing? GET JONES WHILE HE’S AVAILABLE! In turn it will also take a big blow to the Braves! If I recall correctly Jones used to kill our pitchers. He’s not even a risk to me since AT LEAST 25 HR/year is not a bad deal for me. Come on…Milledge isn’t ever going to produce like him and we all know that. I feel like something will happen to Milledge in the future also like a huge fight or shooting or some controversy over his rap album or whatever. I would much rather Andruw Jones, a mellow, quiet, does his job and shuts up kind of guy. No show boating just quiet production. Please feel free to give me an argument against getting him!
It doesn’t make sense to get him unless we ALREADY traded Milledge and prospects for a pitcher or are on the verge of. ANd to play devil’s advocate, which always do on here, there will be a problem with who plays center, and boras is his agent. Lately, we’ve done ok with Boras, but he’s pushing for an enormous contract for jones. I would gladly sign him to an ichiro type deal, if it means we have or are getting our frontline pitcher. WE NEED BULLPEN HELP THOUGH!!!
The problem with waiting is that he can sign with any team…any second. Can’t wait to make the skeptics look foolish come next season when he’s a big part of that Braves lineup.
Sorry, I just realized he was actually a FREE AGENT! Haha damn…ok now if the Mets don’t sign him, they’re just downright dumb. You know we will need an everyday veteran outfielder after we try to get any kind of pitcher, so who else but Andruw Jones? To give you more of my point of view, I found this article that I support it’s a good read… http://www.nysun.com/article/66434
I don’t know, a guy who can hit over .222, or a guy that actually plays right field, a guy who won’t be being chased by teams that actually need bats….
Am I the only one out here that feels like he’s a total sleeper, and feels that he will bounce back? The guy is still only 30! He wouldn’t be much money, and we only lose money, not prospects! I would think this is a no brainer…why haven’t the Mets, with all their money bought him as they know even without a pitcher trade that they need more outfielders.
I think he’ll bounce back, but wasn’t there something about an elbow injury last year that was holding him back? Is that still an issue?
it’d be hard for me to root for smirky jones, but I think I’d get used to it.
NO WAY DUDE!!! I been supporting the idea of signing him. People tend to forget that from mid may to when alou came back, this offense was STAGNANT, and we gave up good pitching performances A LOT. Adding his bat, with his good defense, is a no brainer, and just the kind of “surprise” Omar likes to make. That gives us the ability to trade ‘everyone” for a frontline starter. I back this move
I would give him a five year deal at 14per……
Stagnant? With the exception of:
Wright: .352/.432/.602
Lo Duca: .291/.309/.488 (21 RBI)
Delgado: .321/.388/.566
Alou: .402/.434/.607
Beltran: .282/.328/.555
Castillo:.316/.404/.418
Geez. Terrible September.
To play devil’s advocate a little more, what if he was a product of performance enhancing drugs? Coincidence that his production started slacking and he got banged up as soon as the testing got a little harder?
Not accusing him of it, just playing devil’s advocate, especially because it seems to have happened to lots of guys this year….Tejada, Vernon Wells, Delgado, Marcus and Brian Giles, Giambi, Jason Bay. Can’t help but be skeptical.
I’m with you on this one. MLB across the board suffered a huge power outage last year .. coincidence? Not likely.
EXACTLY! Then if we give up Milly, who cares? What are the chances he would’ve turned into an Andruw Jones? Slim to none. With his build, he can’t produce the power Jones has unless he took the Bonds approach. Another interesting option I’m thinking about is Josh Hamilton…apparently the Reds are open to offers for him?! He’s a GREAT young player that changed his life and his reputation shouldn’t be a factor, since his drug problem is over. I wonder what it would take to get him…
Can you stop talking so much?
And while you’re at it, keep your fantasies to yourself.
Haha Danny, I guess with this day in age you never know. But I mean that’s kind of extreme isn’t it? I want to see someone argue against the move from a logical baseball standpoint. I mean if I were Minaya, I would seriously sign the kid right now. Like Bigchart333 said, he would allow us to trade ALL of our top prospects without feeling any ill affects! We trade the pitchers for other pitchers, and once Milly goes, we have Jones to replace him. Beautiful.
I’m just saying. All of their bodies broke down too. Wasn’t just a lack of production.
One other thing is, how did it work out for us last time we had two center fielders in the outfield?
ok the next person to bring up “Trading Carlos Beltran” should lose their posting privledges. He has a NO TRADE CLAUSE!!! and say he would waive it (which he wouldn’t) NO TEAM would pick up his salary, we had to overpay Beltran to join the Mets.
At this point (See Tori Hunter signing) Beltran is not overpaid.
I’d think many teams would be interested in a gold glove power hitting centerfielder.
I also think the in his heart, Beltran doesn’t like NY and would accept a trade to any team with a chance of winning, which these days is almost any team
MINAYA SIGN JONES! Before some other damn team does! I’d seriously bet at least $100 that he will be back to his old self and the Mets will be pissed they didn’t sign him when they could for a low price tag.
LIMETFAN08 SHUT YOU MOUTH! Before I have to damn do it! I’d seriously bet at least $100 that you don’t have a life and I will be pissed to see you post again, when I could have shut you up myself!
Welcome to a forum son…this is the place people talk. If you must get into it, I bet I’m more accomplished than you at 18 years old. It’s like yelling at people in libraries for being quiet…that’s what libraries are for you moron just as forums are for posting. If your panties are up in a bunch just leave and take your PMS with you. It’s easy to tell people to shut their mouth when you’re in the protection of your own home and have no idea who the other person is. Just another E-thug trying to stroke his ego…hmm on Metsblog? Why don’t you argue like this on myspace or something? Thought we were grown men here.
No way! I’ll take that bet. I dont want another Braves retread.
You won’t take a 30 year old, power htting, gold glove outfielder? NUTS
Yeah, you go sign Rowand and see how his number dip out of the Philly Band Box. Hunter is gone. Dunn is the strike out king of the planet. Mlledge will be traded to Oakland for someone….bank on it.
Jones is the best option. 5 years – 14 per
Jones isn’t the best option because he’ll go where he can, you know, play his position and take his steroids.
Why do people continue to even think about trading Beltran? Because he’s “soft”? Because he “doesn’t care”
Show me a list of CF’s who will give you .275/35 HR/110 rbi/20 sb with gold glove defense, at 30 years of age.
Bottom line, the guy had a bad first year with the team, but since then he is one of the best OF’s in baseball period.
RallyTowels, I would like to echo what you have said. I don’t know what people expect from the guy. I’m a big fan of his and I would put him in as one of 3 guys that MUST be on the field at Opening Day 2009 at Citi Field.
The guy isn’t a distraction, on or off the field, he speaks to the media, and he produces. I think he has a little bit of the Eli Manning “syndrome”, in that he isn’t as emotional as we want him to be. Let’s win a title and see. I can tell he wants to win badly.
Beltran is a keeper. Not as good as his contract, but I’ll take him any day over Torii Hunter. You think the Angels wouldn’t?
My only problem with having two established center fielders in the same outfield is they both instinctively want to catch the ball (see the collision from a couple of years ago with Beltran and Mike Cameron).
Otherwise I don’t think he’s done though he’s not big in on-base percentage. He plays a great outfield and hits with power.
People need to stop caring what teams players were on that we sign from free agency or acquire from a trade. It’s all about wins. Andruw Jones WILL be his old self this coming season.
And of course you know because you own BALCO?
ok it doesnt really matter who we sign but can everyone agree w/ me that the mets would beat the yankees in a street fight anyday?
AGREED….I would love to see Delgado and Castro beat AROD and Jeter senseless………….
lol thanks for the image.
there needs to be an mlb street fighter video game so we could make that happen
I would sign Andruw to a one year deal for 15-20 mil with a 2nd year option…
i still would like a corner OF tandem of Endy/Milledge/Gomez/F-Mart
