Read: Fixing The Mets

by Regis Courtemanche on November 24th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

In an article for Newsday, Ken Davidoff critiques what the Mets have done so far this off-season, and suggests what still needs to be done to improve the team.

Davidoff, on what has been done already…

“3. Exercised their 2008 option on Moises Alou. Thumbs down. At some point, the 41-year-old Alou is going to stop hitting. And even if he keeps hitting, he’s going to keep getting hurt, too.”

…on what still needs to be done…

“1. Trade Aaron Heilman, Lastings Milledge, Kevin Mulvey and a lower-level prospect to the A’s for Dan Haren.”

“The beauty of a Haren trade is that the Mets would be acquiring an ace for the price of a back-of-the-rotation starter. They would retain the payroll flexibility to go out and get Santana on the free-agent market a year from now, if Santana is still available, or Erik Bedard in two years.”

…davidoff has several valid points and this was an interesting read, but i actually liked keeping alou on for 2008…of course he’s a risk, but a risk worth taking…

…also, his trade proposal would most likely bring haren to the mets, but i’m still anxious to see which prospects, if any, minaya decides to deal…

Buzz: At Least Reyes or Cano for Santana

by Matthew Cerrone on November 24th, 2007 at 2:26 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com, citing ‘rival executives,’ the Twins want at least ‘one big-name major leaguer’ for Johan Santana, such as Mets SS Jose Reyes or Yankees 2B Robinson Cano.

…well, of course they want that, but, the question is, will a team actually be willing to part with it

In Newsday, At O’Brien writes that the Santana Sweepstakes are about to begin, ‘and the Yankees and Mets are expected to go all-out in attempting to acquire the ace lefthander.’

Rosenthal also writes that for Santana to approve a trade, he must also be signed immediately to at least a seven-year, $140-million deal.

However, at his blog for ESPN.com, citing a ‘well-place source,’ Buster Olney writes: “Santana may open contract discussions for something in the range of six years and $150 million, beginning with the 2009 season.”

In fact, Olney ultimately views this coming discussion, be it between the Mets and Twins, Yankees and Twins, Santana’s agent and the new team, etc, as being very, very complicated, and so, “Given all of those factors that have to be considered, it may be very hard for [the Twins] to agree to a trade, and for any interested team to finish the deal. We’ll see.”

Buzz: Mets Interested In Garcia

by Regis Courtemanche on November 24th, 2007 at 11:31 am

In an article for the Daily News, Anthony McCarron reports that the Mets have expressed interest in free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia.

Garcia’s agent, Peter Greenberg, as quoted by McCarron:

“The Mets have shown considerable interest in him, and some other teams, too. Omar has called several times. Omar likes him. The Mets were one of the top contenders when the Phillies got him.”

Garcia, 32, is rehabbing from shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff and should be ready to pitch by midseason. Over his career he is 117-76 and has a 4.07 ERA.

…garcia averages roughly 200 innings per season, so if healthy, he could replace some of what the Mets lost when Tom Glavine went back to the braves…if the team didn’t pay too much to get him, it could be a decent move, but i’ve never been too big a fan of garcia…

…i’m just waiting to see what they plan on doing to improve the bullpen, other than trading away Guillermo Mota

[youtube PumCTyofJbI nolink]

…it’s a bit risque, but reyes is prominently featured starting at around the 2:45 mark…he looks like he’s having much more fun in this video than he did at the end of the season…

…hat tip to alex for the info…
