Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, citing ’sources in Milwaukee,’ reports the Reds and free-agent RHP Francisco Cordero have agreed to a four-year, $46 million deal.
Cordero, who pitched for the Brewers last season, was 44-for-51 in save chances and had a 2.98 ERA in 66 appearances in 2007.

The market on these top notch BP guys seems to be closing quickly. The Mets top priority is definately SP, but I would hate to loose out on someone.
You are right, it looks more and more that Heilman is a chip. We need to replace him so we can trade from strength. There are some real good bullpen guys available.
Guys dont get your hopes up. I am really not expecting the mets to be that good this year…Just plain and simple…its really not that bad I been watching bad baseball all me life…
good attitude there JL185…..with the new stadium opening in 2009 and a young core of Beltran, Wright, & Reyes locked up for another 4 yrs, I would seriously doubt that Freddie Coupons would shut it down and rebuild…..however, with that said, let’s get moving Omar. F Cordero would have been fantastic as an 8th inning guy and closer-in-waiting. I guess playing for the Reds is more compelling….loser!
I highly doubt the Mets even talked with Cordero. Of course, it was in my mind that he would have been a great set up man and probably worth 12 mil per year as a setup man for the Mets. However, the Mets are seemingly not interested in improving their horrible bullpen and that would lead many of us to feel that the Mets are content with just and average, 80-85 win season.
Do you really think he would have signed on as a set-up man after the year he had last year?
Sounds like wishful thinking to me. This isn’t a video game.
exact point i made below
He’s not a loser, he’s a closer. I’ll just assume that you left off the c.
These FA guys are not out to do what’s best for the Mets, they do what’s best for them. Why would Cordero want to come to the Mets and be a setup man when he can go somewhere else and be a closer, which is the more prestigious role and the one that nets him the most dough?
He’d come to the Mets in the make believe world of some of these fantasy GMs where it is plausible to add 12 M dollar a year relievers to set up and the Mets, because of their increased income stream, now increase their payroll to 150M.
I live these “I’m worried we aren’t going to add a top bullpen guy” (as if any of these guys are a slam dunk) or we should strengthen the bullpen to trade Heiman? Huh? Exactly who are all these great bp guys hanging around?
It totally agree with you, JL185. There’s not the urgency from the front office like there was 2 offseasons ago. The Mets are passing on players left and right and to me, like JL185, we see the writing on the wall. I’m prepared for an 80-85 win season in ‘08, and maybe just build from there.
Going into ‘09 we may not be much better either. You have to understand baseball is a business and ownership will have a new ballpark in ‘09 and the Mets will probably make more money in ‘09 than anytime in their history. Ownership’s plan is clear – to maximize on that profit by not giving out anymore huge contracts – that means no big FA signings this year or next.
To ever win another title, the mets will have to get a new owner! He is as cheap as they come and always will be! 80-85 wins does sound about right for the 08 mets as presently constructed. On another note, if i was Omar, i would look at Haren,Blanton,Bedard instead of Santana! Santana isnt much better than Haren and he is signed much cheaper for 2 years plus he wont command as many prospects in a trade! It would be cool if Omar could get Blanton and Haren in the same deal.
I agree. For the price, I think Haren is a better bet than Santana.
I completely disagree.
In fact, I can’t even understand how you even typed that with a straight face.
Actually, I did type that with a straight face. Maybe you misunderstood what I meant.
I never said Haren was better than Santana. Of course, I would take Santana any day over Haren. But, just for arguments purposes, if the conversation for Santana begins with someone like Reyes, I would prefer Haren at the lower price.
Reyes + Haren > Santana alone.
CW, look at Haren’s stats opposed to Santana’s stats last year! Haren is signed much cheaper and i was reading an article somewhere stating that Santana’s stats are in decline the last 4 years and he gave up 33 homers last year! Plus dont think for one minute that the Yanks and Red Sox wont offer top players for Santana! the thinking this blog is that the Yanks wont give up the prospects but i say they will to get a pitcher that could take them to the WS! Haren is a top starter and i would find out sooner than later if he is available and for what price!
Why all the exclamation points! Are you Elaine Bennis?
i feel i have to make some points on here to some people!! You have to use your brain when looking at trading for a Santana or Haren! The mets arent the only team that will be after Santana and our prospects are below the Yanks and Sox in terms of value to the Twins!
A. Santana is much better than Haren
B. the Yankees are definitely getting Santana, because they must and they can.
C. The Mets are interested in Haren.
HA! Elaine Bennis… thans good stuff.
Sense of urgency? Who would all of you have signed/traded for?
It was said above and below, but F. Cordero, or any other bona fide closer, is not going to sign with a team to be its 8th inning guy with the possibility of assuming the closer role in a year or two. That’s just not the way it works.
The offseason is still young. Unfortunately, the holes we need to fill we will need to fill through trades; and blockbuster-type trades (which, apparently, are the only ones that will make a lot of people on this board happy) tend not to happen until after the winter meetings.
And perhaps some of you haven’t noticed that Omar has been rather active so far in shoring up the complimentary pieces we need (Castillo, Castro, M. Anderson, Estrada …)
I don’t really see how anything we have or haven’t done makes us only an 80 win team.
It’s NOVEMBER! The internet and daily and hourly updates have really affected the young baseball fans like JL185 and Mets24 who have no concept of the history of the sport. The winter meetings have not yet taken place, kids.
If you look at the Mets history of good FA and bad FA signings (the big names), the good ones all came with patience after the meetings, the bad ones typically were done earlier in December. But no, you cannot wait, you need Omar to show his cards today, to let YOU know everything will be alright four months before the season instead of three.
Reading these 15 year olds complain before anything happens is just maddening.
UNREAL! Santana’s price just went up! This might have effected the price for him more than the Zito deal. Who would have guessed when Pedro signed a few years ago, that this guy would now get a bigger contract?!
what’s wrong with u people? Why would u think cordero would want to set up? I been saying it since day 1 of FA, the guy WANTS TO CLOSE, and by signing with last place Cincy or whatever the heck they were, it’s proven. THere are so many pipe dreams by posters on here. U can’t just say “oh omar, you suck” because you don’t konw what cordero wants to do. Does he even WANT TO PLAY IN NY, even if he were to close? That’s neither here nor there, the guy wants to be a closer, and now he can close for a terrible team
thank you, voice of reason
:)
Omar can’t just “pull the trigger” or “get it done” just because we can go on and on about it here. There are real people involved here, and they make decisions that aren’t always based on making the Mets better. Not everyone wants to play in NYC, not everyone is waiting in line to set up for Wagner. Cordero just made the big fish small pond decision. That doesn’t make Wilpon cheap or Omar stupid, it just makes Cordero Red.
Also, who are all these great players Omar is missing out on? ARod? Please. Overpriced relievers? The bigger issue is there are no FAs that are a match with the Mets needs. If the Mets needed a CFer, they would be talking to the 3 available. There were no exceptional 2B C or SP this year. So the Mets are supposed to package a bunch of second rate prospects and somehow convince the Twins or As to give up a top pitcher. As they say, slap some lipstick on that pig.
I want A-Rod…… I want Santana…… I want Jorge….. I want Cordero ….. I want Haren……. I want Hunter……. You’ll get nothing and like it!!!!
——caddyshack
I love that movie.
Haren is a possibility.
However talking like mets genius won’t help people get him!!
uh oh guys…check out this link
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2007/11/24/2007-11-24_mets_interested_in_freddy_garcia.html
yeah i already read it! he might be a good pickup mid season for a contender. Garcia is a good pitcher who is a #3 pitcher who has pitched in some big games but having said that, Omar still needs to focus on an ace! He’d better or were done for 08
yeah i agree…depends on the contract though…he could be a good 4 or 5 in 09 if (when??) we trade pelfrey/humber/mulvey etc lol
not a bad thought at a very low price…but he’ll never sign until spring training when he shows he’s healthy. most likely offer from omar would be a one year at five to eight mil.
As for all the posts listed today….people you need to come down to earth. first of all the mets have one of the highest payrolls in bb. so the wilpons are not cheap (poor spending maybe, but not cheap). secondly, this is not some computer game or board game where omar is able to sign/trade anyone/everyone he wants. for all we know he looked into cordero and was told that he was only interested in closing. end of story.
and lastly, ‘08 does not look that bleak. its the same basic group that nearly made the playoffs. no one else in the league has improved to the point that the mets are listed as underdogs. when springs rolls around the mets will be placed up there with a handful of other teams as favorites.
you guys do realize that this contract is bigger than the one we gave Billy Wagner? so you want to spend more on your 8th inning guy than your closer, boy am I glad some of you aren’t GM’s. And also, as everyone has said, Cordero doesn’t care about the Mets, why would he? why would you think he does? He cares about closing and making a name for himself, making money, not setting some other close up. C’mon people, enough with bashing for the sake of bashing.
Exactly, at corderos age he knows thers another contract out ther
for him after this one and unless he becomes mel rojas, a closer will get 2 or 3 x the $ a set-up guy will. Plus I have the sinking feeling Omar is county on Sanchez this yr.–very if since
he hasn’t throw a pitch in anger in almost 2 yrs.
Pls. lets stop w/ freddy skill-sets being cheap. our last 4 GMs
have thrown plenty of his $ around just to the wrong guys half
the time.
And again, if you can get Santana, you give the twins what they want/want to pay i.e. gomez or millage-any 2 of humber, pelphrey
or Mulvey and if need be f.martinez.just get it done!
this guy is the best pitcher in the gm. and hes 28!
i love have ppl call wilpon cheap …… how many GM’s have 12 million dollar set up men ???? … oh thats right .. NONE
3rd highest payroll in baseball….
cordero wasnt going to set-up anyway
….. case closed
This guy was not on the Mets radar…He’s making more $$ than Wagner now, and no way would he be signed as a set up guy….he’s not in our plans so lets just move on….
off topic …………..
does anyone else laugh at how fatso (francessa) regards Ian Kennedy when talking about the yankees making a trade.
This kid has AVERAGE stuff at best… cant hold a candle to Maine or Ollie, pitched 2 OKAY games, is automatically slotted into the 08 rotation, and is now a “BIG CHIP” in the trade market
hahaha
just me? or any1 else been noticing this?
According to Francesa, the Yankee batboy is a prime trading chip.
and what about tabata
anytime he talks about yankees prospect, he talks about tabata as the next hank aaron.
anyone see cordero’s home/road splits??….. he was HORRIFIC on the road last year … ERA over 6 ……
Call me crazy, but I don’t think the mets are going to make that blockbuster deal we all are screaming for. I think the prices in players are too high. And I don’t care. I might be the only person who thinks the mets are fine the way they are……Hear me out:
2008 SP
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Heilman
Humber
2008 Bullpen
closer: Wagner
set up: Pelfrey
long: El Duque
etc: Schoenweiss
smith
feliciano
Sanchez
1B: Delgado
2B: Castillo
ss: Reyes
3b: Wright
CF: Beltran
LF: Alou
RF: Milledge
C: Castro/Estrada
I LIke It.
Cold live with that, and win 90 games to boot.
I would probably swap Humber and Pelfrey though.
no Gomez or Gotay or Mulvey in that scenario…..so why not package Gomez, Gotay, and Humber to the Twins for Garza. Move Pelfrey into the #5 slot and away we go…..
No way Pelfrey is bumped out of the rotation for Heilman. Both are a crap shoot as starters, but Heilman is proven as a reliever. Never gonna happen.
They are fine that way, if you could live with 80-85 wins next season in an effort to grow Humber and Pelfrey for the next several years. But I cant see most fans putting up with a “rebuilding year” when Alou, Delgado, Pedro, and Wagner are still part of the core of the team.
You could start with this core and sign a starter of the Garcia/Silva/Livan variety to allow Humber/Pelfrey to compete for the 5th starter role while the other develops in AAA.
While I agree I also think there is something to the mentailty that you can’t just run out the same team that collapsed last year and not add anything to it. In fact, though the backup replacements are better, you are taking away three starters in Lo Duca, Green and Glavine. I think it’s addition by subtraction but you still have to change something by adding — it was a fluke thing but 7 with 17 to go cannot just be swept under the rug.
when Humber goes like 1-5… and El Duque has a sub 2 ERa as the long man… we will be screaming for Duque in the rotation
i just dont see us starting Pelf/Humb over Duque
the key is Duaner Sanchez ……. if he is healthy, thats the best bullpen addittion for any team this offseason
A bullpen will also benefit from starters who can get you into the 6th and 7th innings on a regular basis. We had big problems last year bringing in our second-tier relievers (Mota, Show, Feliciano Smith) to get way too many outs too many times in the middle innings.
Both points I’ve been harping on. Sanchez cannot be relied upon to be as good as he was on 2006. He might be healthy, but how does that make him effective? He may be no better than Mota would have been.
And the starters are the key to the pen being better. They are for almost every team, every year. They need to do more than replace Glavine and Duque with Garcia and Pedro if they want to avoid a pen meltdown again next year. Even though the player development part of me wants to believe that Maine and Perez will improve and be more consistent they could also take steps backwards or sideways.

I can see it now: The Key to 2008 success: RON MAHAY.
That IS funny.
