At his Mets Minor League Report, Toby Hyde talks with Adam Wogan, the Mets Director of Minor League Operations, who not only discusses specific players, but also explains much of the team’s philosophy on how they develop and scout players.
Wogan, on being aggressive in how the team promotes its prospects through the minor-league system…
“We like to challenge guys, might be the term we like to use a little more than “push.” We feel if guys are ready, we like to see what they can do ahead and do at a level. It’s good for our guys to face adversity and be in a spot where they have to step up to show us what they can do in a tough situation. All that really matters is the big league level. All that matters is what guys are going to be able to do when they get there, and helping out the Mets organization. We feel like challenging players is the best route to go.”
On a similar subject, at Minor League Ball, John Sickels takes issues with how the Mets handle their prospects, such as Carlos Gomez, who, according to Sickels, “had no business in the majors last year.”

what’s omar doing right now? looking for valentin??? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
genius you are a GENIUS!! I agree 100%, the Z’s you hear are coming from Omar Minaya’s Office. If anyone needs examples:
1) Jon Garland to the Angels for Orlando Cabrera. Surely, the Mets could have put together a package for Garland that would outbid the Angels, seeing as the Angels gave up a 33 yr old journeyman Shortstop with a career .273 batting average for a 28 year old starter who has thrown 200 IP in each of the last 4 season.
2) Scott Linebrink to the White Sox. Mets need relief help, no???
3) Francisco Cordero to the Reds (yes the Reds). Mets need relief help no?
Omar better wake up or he’s gotta go.
Wow, glad you’re not the GM
Orlando Cabrera is a journeyman? How about a guy who hit .301 last year with 86 RBI, 20 SB and 101 Runs. Who, exactly, do the Mets have that had those stats last year and is expendable. And for a pitcher who, while compiling four straight years of 200 innings had ERA’s of 4.89, 3.50, 4.51 and 4.23? No thank you.
Scott Linebrink’s deal was one of the worst I can remember in recent memory. If there is anything Omar has proven, it is that you don’t give journeymen relievers more than 1 or 2 year deal for big money, unles they are proven closers.
Francisco Cordero would not have signed anywhere where he would not close. Should he have closed over Wagner? He has had 1.5 good seasons, you really think he’s worth a four yeaer deal for Wagner money?
Sometimes the best moves are the ones not made. Let’s see what Omar’s got going. Or, maybe he should just jump on the first move avaiable and trade prospects who could go for Haren or Santana so he can get an average starter like Garland.
Couldn’t agree with you more, md13, these are not moves Omar should/could have been in on. The Sox need to win now with their rapidly aging core and have an obvious need at SS. We don’t have anyone that would make sense to give them there, and I can’t beleive that anyone would seriously want us to give two relievers four year deals. Linebrink and Cordero aren’t even particularly sure bets for the future compared to other bullpen arms- Linebrink has regressed over the last couple of years, and lots of people seem to forget that Cordero was considered a potentially risky project as recently as the beginning of last year. I don’t even think that those signings at that money for those years made sense for the Brewers or Reds, let alone for the Mets outbidding them for both.
Linebrink and Cordero may not be sure bets but they would most likely be better than Mota ,Schoeneweis and Sele.
If you’re talking about planning for next year, we only hold the 2008 contract for one of those three. As for choosing where to invest the payroll, those three relievers were signed to deals totaling 6 years for 16.8 mil. Cordero and Linebrink signed for a total of 8 years and 65 mil, and the Mets would have had to outbid those numbers to get them. I don’t really get the comparison here….
i worry if wagner is going to let us down next season. with the way he pitched in ‘07, i don’t have confidence in him. he didn’t appear to be confident himself either…
“InsaneMetsFan”… your name pretty much sums up your post
i think you are both geniasses
we need pitching but we don’t need to get all trigger-happy and make a deal for the sake of making a deal, be patient, I know that is the opposite of what the hot-stove is about but still
Probably not a bad idea to wait until the off season is over before judging Omar’s moves (good or bad).
Would you have traded a chip that could be part of a deal for Haren or Santana for Garland? No. While these players may not get dealt, this early in the off season you don’t want to limit your flexibility.
I am not saying that the Mets don’t need to make some moves – they do. A front line starter if very important. But some times it’s the more mundane moves that make a difference. Something like a cheap right handed bat to platoon at first (Phelps?). Roger Cedeno turned out t be a key cog on the ‘99 team, and the acquisition of John Olerude in ‘97 was not seen at the time as a difference maker. Did anyone think much when the Mets acquired Bobby O from the Red Sox before the ‘86 season? Bob Bailor put in some good season as well, and helped us get Sid Fernandez later on.
I guess all I’m saying is that the Mickey Lolich / Randy Jones / George Foster / Tom Verizor / Bobby Bonilla / Robbie Almor “no brainier” moves in November and December often have a splash, but make no waves when it counts.
Sorry for the long response.
I had to come back to Metsblog as watching the Giants game makes me ill. Maybe Eli Manning would have better luck in the Mets bullpen??????
Eli Manning would be the first pitcher to throw off his back foot.
I agree Gomez had no business in the majors last year, But that’s what happens when the paent club loses all 3 starting OFs at once, plus the top bench option PLUS the top minor league option.
Honestly, I’m happier that they bloodied Gomez for an extended period at the major league level than going hardcore with a Rickey Ledee type.
Yup. I’m sure the Mets would have preferred to keep Gomez out of the majors, but there were too many injuries to be permitted that luxury.
And I don’t think that Gomez’s long-term development suffered either. He should have plenty of time to play at AAA this year. Maybe the taste of the majors will make him hungrier.
I believe that the Mets propoganda for prospects is very good. If they see that someone is obviously past the minor league stages, let them get some at bats in the bigs so they can capitalize on the problems they could have.
I see Carlos Gomez as an extremely valuable trade option. Man, if we could deal him Heilman and two prospects not named Milledge, Martinez or Guerra, and even get an ace in return, that would really make this season worth watching.
I can see it now, the biggest fleece of the season:
Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, Mike Pelfrey and Ruben Gotay for Erik Bedard/Dan Haren.
It makes me feel warm and cuddly inside.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Omar deal off Gomez right now, so he can start Milledge in right. I still think that if we could get Garza for Gomez and Gotay we’d be ready for next season, but if Gomez has more value than Milledge, that would be very good for the Mets, for they could have a shot at Erik Bedard.
I’m praying to God that teams see Gomez as valuable.
A Gomez, Heilman, Pelfrey, Gotay and Humber package to the Orioles for Bedard would really be a steal.
Martinez
Bedard
Maine
Perez
Livan
Sick. A bullpen with Sosa, Duque, Feliciano, Schoeneweis, Heilman, Sanchez and Wagner would really have us starting in the right direction.
How is Heilman in the bullpen if you traded him to the O’s?
details, details
we’re makin’ trades here!
Excuse me, meant to write Smith.
I think we should sign Silva and Garcia or Colon. Then trade a lesser package for Harden. I know Harden is an injury risk but I would think that with Elduque, Pelfrey , Heilman, Mulvey and Humber still in the system and signing an innings eater would alow us to take that risk. He is absolutely dominant when healthy and just might be the ace we are looking for. If not then we look to make a trade midseason. How about Heilman and a prospect?
With Sanchez improving and Elduque moving to the pen that would give room for Heilman to be traded.
I really hope that the Twins resign Santana. I don’t want to sink all those resources into Santana from the prospects to the money. I am much more interested in Garza and he would only be available if they resign Santana. Then they will need some cheap position players.
I would love to make these 2 trades.
Gomez, Smith,and Gotay for Garza
Heilman, Pelfrey and a prospect for Cabrerra and Huff.
Rotation
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Garza
Cabrerra
Lineup
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Alou
Delgado
Milledge/Huff
Castro/Estrada
Bullpen
Wagner, Sanchez, Feliciano, Elduque, Showenwise, Sosa, other
Bench
Anderson, Chavez, Huff, Easley, Castro/Estrada
Huff would be a great addition for us as he can play IF and OF and hits well LH.
Garza and Cabrerra would give us young pitchers with high potential at the back of the rotation.
We would still have Milledge, Mulvey and Martinez to build around.
I’m not sold on Daniel Cabrera.. Mine as well keep Pelfrey if you want a pitcher with high potential at the back of the rotation.
Garza Cabrera OP and Maine. No thanks. 4 totally inconsistent pitchers. You’d need to carry 0 guys in the bullpen to make up all thie innings these guys don’t pitch.
I wouldn’t mind have Garza, Perez and Maine. Maine was tipping his pitches last year. Perez did fine, when his fielding did, and Garza did well last season.
But Cabrera would be a waste, considering his performance is like that of Pelfrey but he’s older and has less upside.
I totally agree-Carlos Gomez had no business being in the majors on 2007.I mean was he ever at bat when there wasn’t an 0-2 count on him.he looked way over matched at the plate all the time.he did show some good leather and good base running at times.
If Alou,Chavez weren’t Hurt he wouldn’t be in the majors.
Talking about Chavez-he did nothing when he came back from the disabled list.I don’t see the upside to him-I think he’s overated.
I think another thing that killed us was Damien Easley’s injury-he was rockin-then we got Jeff Connine who also did nothing.
Peace, jason
Fellow Mets lovers; I got my owner certificate in the mail for my brick in the Citifield fan walkway.
What a great Christmas gift!
Be sure to check the inscription when the info arrives; ya only got 10 days to correct any errors!
Come on Omar; get us half way to 2009!
LETS GO METS !
What did it cost you?
My wife got me the 4×8 brick for $195.
You can write off most of it as a donation, per The Mets selected foundations.
I put; “I was at Game 4
69 World Series
and my name”
and it will be there long after I’m gone! Outstanding!
They have other options as well.
Check it out on the Mets Offical Website.
I think it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten and I got sod from the field in ‘69 after we won the pennant and infield dirt from Banner Day and a slat from a green general admission seat (also ‘69 celebration)
I was not the moron who fell off the scoreboard!
cool stuff.
Isn’t the name of the new stadium “Citi Field” — two words just like Shea Stadium?
Good stuuf #41! The only thing I ever got from Shea was the Mursa Staff Infection.
that not good
I think that is the point. The Mets are talking about Gomez competing for a spot in the OF this year. They should not even consider it. He cannot hit right now. Stop BS ing, or forcing the kid, and just let him learn. Frankly I do not think he will ever be a big time offensive player. Hopeful.ly I am dead wrong
Precisely!
What caught my attention was the following post by Sickels:
New York Mets: OMG this farm system sucks.
Yeah, he’s not talking about Gomez. He’s talking about the lack of depth in the hitting department outside of Gomez and Martinez.
However I guarantee that Lucas Duda will turn heads this year.
