In a report from Yahoo! Japan, Japanese free-agent RHP Hiroki Kuroda met with the Mariners this past weekend, and is believed to be seeking a
four-year, $45 million contract.
…thanks to MLB Trade Rumors for the link, and translation…
Mark Hale, in the New York Post, recently wrote that the Mets have had interest in Kuroda.
The following day in Newsday, David Lennon noted that the Mets had been scouting Kuroda, while playing in the Asia Series in Japan.
Recently at Prospect Insider, Jason A. Churchill offered up a very detailed and complete scouting report on the 32–year-old Kuroda, writing…
“Kuroda is the class of the three free agents and will get the most interest but he profiles as a No. 3 at best…He’s slow to the plate but has a relatively compact and clean delivery that gives his fastball some late life…Considering the domestic market, Kuroda, even at 33 years old, could command a contract in the $9-11 million range, for at least three years.”
At Mike Pagliarulo’s Dugout Central, Will Hoover projects that Kuroda would likely have a mid-5.00 ERA, through 160 or so innings, during roughly 30 starts for a major-league team.
With regards to potentially switching and pitching from relief for the Red Sox, Hoover says, “They already have similar production at a cheaper price in the form of Julian Tavarez.”

If I wanted that..I’d just go and try and get Steve Trachsel back
Im getting tired of the rumors already and the winter meetings are still a week away, this is bad.
this sounds EXACTLY like a move the mets would make. an aging middle of the road sp for lots of money. Although I’m also starting to sicken of the Santana talk, we NEED him. we are not talking about the best guy available…we’re talking about the best guy in all of baseball (albiet argueably). His value is that he can already be penciled in for games 1 and 4 of any post season series. His percieved post-season struggles aside, he gives us the best chance to win his 2 games, AND the best chance to save our bullpen for the other games. You cannot say that about any pitchers on our roster (or on our farm) at this point. Omar. please do whatever it takes short of Reyes and Wright to get this man
Kuroda doesn’t seem worth it to the Mets to consider.
Beckett’s the best guy in all of baseball hands down, in my opinion. That said, I’m okay with going for Santana as long as we don’t get stupid about it. I don’t want to trade Reyes, Perez or Maine. If we have to pay too much, go for Haren, Bedard, Oswalt, Sheets, or one of the other countless aces that are being mindlessly dangled by random GM’s lately.
I actually think Harden is worth the gamble. Peterson might be able to keep him healthy, and he’s an ace when he is.
Pass
What is up with all these low moderate and unproven pitchers asking for way above average money? A 32 years old Japanese pitcher who has yet to throw a baseball at the major leagues is seeking for 4 years? Are you kidding me, Daisuke Matsusaka (I really don’t remember how to spell his name) is 26 years old and got pounded at the end of the season because his arm was not used to pitching at that short of rest plus the excess of innings and hitters starting to figure him out. Imagine a 32 year old pitcher. Omar do not ingratiate yourself towards the Japanese trend.
