At FOXSports.com, Dayn Perry ranks who he believes to be the Top 10 Under-the-Radar Free Agents.
Of interest to the Mets, Perry lists free-agent RHP Bartolo Colon as third on his list, writing…
“Colon has some near-term upside. He’s coming off injury and his conditioning habits leave much to be desired, but he’s still got excellent stuff, and his performance down the stretch last season proved he’s still got something in the tank. He makes sense provided he’s willing to sign a low-base, incentive-laden contract. If the market is such that he commands a multi-year deal, then consider him no longer worthy of this list.”
…colon is intriguing…however, again, assuming the Mets find
themselves scrambling for a starter, and we’re still talking one-year contracts, i’d rather the Mets go for a guy like Livan Hernandez, who is seventh on perry’s list, and who the Mets have been linked to in rumors…
In 29 starts, spanning the last two seasons, Colon is 7–13 with a 6.34 ERA, during which opponents hit .316 against him.
Meanwhile, Hernandez, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux are the only major-league pitchers to make 30 or more starts in each of the past 10 seasons. However, Hernandez’s total innings-pitched has dropped during each of the last four years.
Perry, on Hernandez…
“He’s usually around the league average in ERA. He’d be a great fit for a team with a strong defense…and in need of innings at the back of the rotation. Hernandez is not an ace by any stretch of the imagination, but he pitches deep into games and always answers the bell.”
In a recent column for FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wrote that the Mets are ‘divided’ on whether to make a ‘strong push’ for Hernandez, who may also be of interest to the Cardinals, Tigers and Astros, among others.

Has it really gotten this bad.
I know that one of the group of Livan, Bartolo, Jason Jennings, Kris Benson , Silva will be a steal and will perform very well.
But which one? How can anyone really know. None have shown very recent success.
One of this group will be available in February. If your group is not set before then…..make a deal for one of them on a short term incentive basis. Otherwise, just let it go to the Marlins or Astros or someone and try to concentrate on getting your best 5 guys right now.
Although his innings are dipping, Livan has proven that he is a innings eating work horse. Omar should just snap him up now and then concentrate on SP and BP at the winter meetings.
The mets need a high quality starter not another person who can vie for the number 5 role. I actually believe that one and two are Martinez and Maine and we’re still hoping that Perez can become more consistent. He’s still definitely one of the better number 3 starters in the league.
I don’t think that Carlos Silva is that good, especially from a BAA or a W-L. Innings eater perhaps. Colon or Livan could surprise, but not for long, better than Chan Ho Park or Brian Lawrence.
I actually think that Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber could be better but are certainly worth trading for a great, proven starter like Santana. I would not give up Reyes, no way. Without him the Mets are the same as they were in Sept. without a productive Reyes. Not even a .500 ballclub. for Santana, Milledge, Pelfrey, and Heilman.
Colon makes a lot of sense to me. He was throwing 96 MPH last year which indicates that he still has something in the tank. Why not take a gamble?
Doesn’t even have to be a low-base salary deal IMO. I’d be willing to gamble one year at $6 million if necessary, with a club option for two more years at 18 million combined (or a million dollar buyout). If he’s damaged goods – or even just league average, he costs us a total of 7M. If he returns to form, throws 180+ IP with an ERA under 3.50 and a boatload of strikeouts, we have him signed through 2010 at a very reasonable rate.
mets must trade for a big time pitcher and then sign colon, livan or garcia
100% dead-on correct!
Or trade for two big time pitchers and let the livans walk
slim pickings – if we dont get santana, this is what we have to pick from.. yikes
on a side note..
sean taylor of the redskins was shot this morning at his house
Given the state of the NFL and pro athletics in general, wouldn’t news of Sean Taylor NOT being shot today at his home be more newsworthy?
Or, in the words of Borad, “eh, Sean Taylor was NOT shot today. Sean taylor was shot today not. Sean Taylor was shot today – pause- not.”
Oops…Borat.
pretty clever!!! a young man gets shot and all you can think of is a sorry excuse for a joke. To Sean Taylor and anyone who knew him. best wishes and prayers for a full recovery. and as far as the above post, you are an embarrassment and should never be allowed to post again. you’ll have to excuse me i think i’m gonna be sick.
Dude, calm down. I read the article and all signs point to him being ok. Why do these guys get shot? You never see Brett Favre getting shot. You never saw Troy Aikman or Randall Cunningham getting shot. You never saw Amani Toomer, Ike Hilliard, Tiki Barber, or Emmitt Smith being shot either.
I too hope he has a full recovery, but the NFL is turning into a poor excuse for a professional league. These guys are all thugs and trouble seems to find them all. Not to mention, Taylor doesn’t exactly have the best track record.
http://was.scout.com/2/520808.html
It is sad, but true. You have to face reality sometimes. In this case, this NFL does not even compare to the NFL of the 80s and 90s. Again, they are all thugs and I don’t envy Roger Goodell…except for his paycheck.
Sorry if I offended anyone though. Was just trying to let you know what I think of the NFL’s players. Although I’m a fan.
DUDE, the man got shot in HIS OWN HOUSE. What exactly does his previous track record have anything to do with that?
I already apologized for the comment. But the reality of the situation is, he is obviously involved with the wrong crowd. When you start messing with people when guns are involved, only bad things can happen. It’s not just Sean Taylor was the only point I was trying to make. All I said was this doesn’t surprise me one bit.
As I said before, why have the following players and former players never been shot at (or shot anyone for that matter):
-Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey, LaDainian Tomlinson, Tom Brady, Chad Johnson, Jonathan Vilma, Larry Johnson….
The list goes on and on. I never wished Sean Taylor harm, but the is getting so ridiculous with these players involved in shootings…whether it is getting shot or doing the shootings. I point to his track record because he himself was carrying a gun. As the old addage says, “keep playing with fire, you’ll get burnt.” I’ll say again, so those of us with short memory lapses won’t accuse me of insensitivity…I NEVER WISHED THIS UPON SEAN TAYLOR. I HOPE HE HAS A SPEEDY RECOVERY AND THEY FIND THE GUY THAT DID IT. ALL I’M TRYING TO SAY IS THE NFL IS A JOKE. THESE PLAYERS RUN AROUND WITH GUNS, KNIVES, AND OTHER WEAPONS THINKING THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAW. This is unfortunately, the end result. Get well Sean.
Let’s go Mets.
A) No one cares about your opinion of NFL players… this is Metsblog.
B) Regardless of whether or not Taylor was an upstanding young citizen, he is still a 24 year old kid who was shot in his own home. He’s still someone’s father, son, significant other, and teammate.
I am far from a sensitive or PC person, and I have a fairly morbid sense of humor, but your “joke” was simply out of line.
And a word of advice. An apology is much more effective without paragraph upon paragraph qualifying what you “meant” or that your callous remark had a modicum of truth in it.
A) what joke?
B) like i said, he didn’t deserve it. nobody does. neither did the guy that pac man’s entourage shot. nor did darrent williams (shot on new year’s eve last year and killed in denver) or joey porter (shot in a night club a few years back).
C) I didn’t bring up the topic. I commented on it. Horrible tragedy, but the NFL needs to come up with something to keep its’ players out of the headlines for the wrong reasons.
RIP Sean Taylor
I really hope the Mets don’t get Livan. He is giving up more walks and more home runs, and getting fewer and fewer strikeouts. We can do better.
He also has spent the past few years in a good hitters park. Coming to Shea would be good for him.
Plus, we don’t need him to be lights out, we need someone to keep us in games and throw 200 innings so the bullpen doesn’t wear out again.
I hate to say it, but this team missed Trachsel. He at least could get us 6 most nights. The Lawrences and Limas of the world only get through 3, if that many.
I’ll take Colon over Livan. Give me someone with the potential to surprise and be dominant over a guy you know you’ll just get decent innings out of.
I do, however, agree that for more than 1 year (or a year with a vesting option), he’s not worth that gamble.
please don’t make light of the situation…the dude got robbed in his own home and shot., and now he’s in critical condition at the hospital.. aside from the fact that they’re black, they play football, and there was a gun involved, this and the Pacman situation couldn’t be more different.
as for pitching, if Colon checks out medically, I’d give him a shot. Livan’s not as enticing, but I guess he’s less of an injury risk…All I know is, if we sign one of those two, it;s cause the prices for the good pitchers (in terms of trade value) got too crazy. Omar knows what he’s doing, he’ll make the right decision.
Another under-the-radar player Perry lists is David Riske as a relief pitcher. Anyone know anything about this guy? The way Perry talks about him, he sounds like he’d be a good pickup for the bullpen.
I believe 100% we will make a deal with the A’s …for what pitcher I have no clue , but what if we landed Haren for Fmart, Humber , and Heilmann ..then traded Gomez + a low level prospect for Garza?? Yes we would need to sign a BP arm or 2 …but Im ok with that gamble for a #2 poss #1..
Rotation:
Pedro
Haren
OP
Maine
Garza
We keep Millz and Pelf…I would be satisfied with those moves.
I think Milledge is the key to getting the A’s to part with Haren. I don’t think they do it without Milledge.
if that could be done i dont see why anyone would have a problem with that. im one of those who is for pelfrey moving to the pen and a move like that could somewhat block him from the rotation and force him into a middle releif role where i think his fastball will be more effective.
How many minutes for Peterson to fix Colon?
I like Colon..I think he’s worth the risk…Worst case scenario he gets injured and it gives one of our kids a shot…
I’d like to see the mets forget Johan and trade Milledge/Gomez, Pelfrey, and Heilman to the A’s for Haren and maybe one of their relievers.
Then either look into acquiring Garza again or signing Carlos Silva. I’d also like to see us gauge whether Andruw Jones would like to play RF for us if we were to sign him. I’ also like to take a flier on Freddy Garcia too lol. figure it like this (and yes, im about to put up a “fake” projected lineup like some people do, but i dont care, i’ll annoy people)
reyes, castillo, wright, beltran, jones, alou, delgado, estrada
Pedro, Haren, Maine, Ollie, Garza/Silva
Duque, Wagner, Sanchez, Feliciano, Shoenweis, Smith, and another
Freddy Garcia can’t really be counted on this year, but you sign him anyway (like when the Yanks signed Jon Lieber) and if he can pitch in say July or August, that adds more depth or insurance if Garza struggles or there is another injury to Duque, Pedro, etc….
See my below post – great example on Leiber. I was LIVID when the Mets let that one fly by. As we learned all too well last year, its a looong season. Mid-year gambles are huge.
How about 2 lesser trades. As I have said before if the Twins keep Santana, go get Garza. If not
Options
Trade
Gomez and Estrada for Molina and Lowry.
Gomez, Pelfrey and a prospect for Snell.
Gomez and Heilman for Harden and Swisher.
Lesser prospects for Cabrerra and Huff.
Gomez, and prospects for Burnett
Gomez for Cliff Lee.
Gomez, Heiman and prospect for E. Santana and Kendry Morales.
Zack Duke would be another low risk high reward trade.
There are other options out there. I would be more upset knowing that Omar did not go for those
So, do you think they should trade Gomez or hang onto him?
j/k
A team like the Mets, with their massive resources, should be all over incentive-laden deals for guys like Colon which have potential to blow out other team AND making other deals so that anything they get is gravy. Sure the Mets will lay out for the superstar contracts here and there, but this is an area where they can really flex their muscle. They have an ability to NOT get burned that few teams do.
Sign Colon up! You get a potential 1-2 type starter on one end of the spectrum, and on the other a 40-man roster spot better spent on the gamble than on Sandy Alomar or Mike DiFelice. Truly nothing to lose.
I’m with you. FOr a ST, incentive laden deal, even if he sucks, you cut him and eat a reasonable amount of moey (for the Mets!). And, if he hits the incentives, you gladly pay since you got an “ace” like performance.
I would rather roll the dice for a year or 2 of COlon, who could be very good, instead of Livan, who, at best, will be poor, and has the potential to be very bad.
A RH Glavine? No thanks. And not for 3 guaranteed years, at enough money to clog up a roster spot.
Anyone else think Colon would make a great setup man at this stage of his career? He’s logged a lot of miles on that arm, but he still has some juice left. Plus, being able to air it out for one inning at a time could pump up his fastball some.
Just a thought.

Whoops, sorry about the duplicate.
I just read where Cerrone said he’d “rather the Mets go after a guy like Livan Hernandez” and I puked in my mouth.
I think Riske is a very interesting name on that list, but to the point: Signing Colon to an incentive-laden contract for as much as three years, even, sounds like a pretty good solution for your fifth starter in ‘08. Something like 3 years, 8 million, with innings-pitched and wins- or ERA-based bonuses… yeah.
Livan’s a pretty good option, I think. He’s the kind of guy that a team like the Mets needs — the kind of guy who will pitch into the 7th, 8th inning on a semi-consistent basis, just to take the pressure off the ‘pen now and again. No, he’s not gonna put up flashy numbers, not at all, but he’s solid. Colon also offers these same benefits, but is more injury-prone.
Yes, just what we need. A guy who will pitch into the 7th or 8th inning and get shelled doing it. With a WHIP like his and 34 HR’s surrendered you better watch those games with a bottle of Tums by your side.
BTW – I just checked his game log from last season and he pitched 8 innings twice and 9 innings once. In the last 3 months of the season he didn’t pitch more than 7 innings and in the last month of the season he didn’t make it past 6.
There have to be better options than that.
Favre Football…
Great, hard hitting letter….
