Over at the Daily News, beat writer Adam Rubin posts an e-mail he received from a source in the Dominican, where GM Omar Minaya has spent the last few days watching winter league ball.
Two notes of interest:
“He was interviewed Sunday and he said that he was watching Carlos Gómez (who is going to get married next Saturday in Santiago, with Moisés Alou his best man and other Mets players at the event).”
…congrats, carlos…looks like you’ve made some quick friends in Queens…whether or not you’ll be spending much time with them next season still remains to be seen…
…on a personal note, carlos and i are the same age, and even the most fleeting thought of marriage scares the bejeezus out of me…
Additionally, Omar said he wasn’t interested in free agent outfielder José Guillén, who played for Seattle last season…well, if Lastings Milledge and/or gomez are traded, there will be a hole to fill in right field… a short term deal with guillen may not be the worst solution…guillen was implicated in purchasing human growth hormone earlier this month, though, so that certainly would cloud any decision…

If Gomez and Millz are dealt to bring in Hardin or Santana then I’d be happy to bring Green back if needed (which I’d rather do over Guillen)

Right. Because I’m sure a) Omar doesn’t have a cell phone, and b) that there was no one of interest playing in those games.

I love it, the Yankees have the back page in NY everyday and are about to acquire one of the best pitchers in baseball and Omar’s in the DR watching winterball. Am I missing something here, did we win the World Series last year? Oh yeah that’s right we were part of the biggest reguler season collapse in MLB history and our GM is on vacation watching winterball. I don’t get it????????????
Relax you big baby, stop engaging yourself in mindless chatter. What you saw is tabloid sensationalism, the Yankees are doing no different than what is otherwise expected. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mets or any other team are not currently initiating talks with the Twins. The Yankees happened to go public which isn’t smart. Minaya’s interests in the Dominican Republic has much to do with the Mets and less to do with Gomez’s wedding. I have never ever seen such a desperate array of Mets Fans in a while, understandably you, we all suffered from one of the worst collapse in baseball history, but you are overreacting nonetheless. Calm down, rest assure that Minaya is doing all he can because he knows the coming season and his job are in jeopardy and he knows that he has to do something big in order to regain the trust of the fans. I don’t care for back pages or bragging rights, I just want a world series. You should do the same.
The New York tabloids are Yankee fans and anything that “Big Bank Hank” does will be news…they’ve made him a “star”.
I like Minaya’s low key approach to this situation. He doesn’t want to show his hand.
I’ll be happy if we just get a stud pitcher. Someone who can throw 95-100mph with a slider and curve to go with it. I’m tired of these old girly type pitchers like Glavin, El Duque, ect. Maybe we need to fired Peterson and revamp the scouting department.
If we don’t get Santana, I’m sure Minaya will go all out to get Bedard or Haren.

Doing absolutely nothing to actually improve your team and going into 2008 with pretty much the exact same team that endured one of the worst collapses in the history of the game is precisely what I would have done.
I am so tired of hearing how the Yankees are always wrong with the way they go about things. It’s a bad thing that they spend more money than anyone else? Yeah, right. I feel much better knowing that my favorite team takes my hard-earned money, raises the price of my full-season ticket plan every single year, and never wins anything. Hey, at least they spent responsibly and didn’t part with any great “prospects”.
Tabloid sensationalism, my ass. What you saw on the back pages of the papers today was the Skankees just about ensuring themselves of yet another consecutive playoff appearance. Are you as confident in the Mets’ chances? I seriously doubt it.
I love those of you who ride on you high horses and proclaim that Omar is a genius for not “mortgaging the future” on the high priced talent; aka “good players”. Any one of you who can actually look yourself in the mirror and say with a straight face that the Mets are better off without guys like A-Rod and Johan Santana on our team because it might have meant that we had to give up guys like F-Mart, Carlos Gomez, or Kevin Mulvey are a joke.
I could give a damn less how much any team spends. The Mets, Yanks, and Red Sox are the three biggest market teams in MLB. The difference is that the Yanks and Sox spend like it, and you know what? Where do you think the 2008 WS Championship banner is going to be hanging? Citifield?
When the Mets are watching the postseason at Livan Hernandez’s house come October, I hope you guys are all real happy with our “prospects”.

I did read up on this dude Kevin Mulvey and i think we should keep him. We need some homegrown pitching talent….just not trash like Pelfry and a suspect like Humber.
I rather see what’s done over the winter before I start bitching and moaning about Omar and the Mets like those sad sacks I hear on the FAN.

If I were a future pro athlete…you could be damn sure I would not tie myself down to one woman.

Glad to here Omar is in the Dominican seeing who he can trade David Wright for. The man will not rest until his r_cist vision is complete.
Maybe Omar can start spending some time in Japan like all the other GMs. Does he know there are countries that dont speak spanish?
