News: Tom McCarthy Leaves WFAN for Phillies
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 27, 2007 4:19 pm

The Phillies have announced that Tom McCarthy, who spent the last two seasons as a play-by-play announcer for the Mets on WFAN, is ‘returning to his roots’ as a member of the Phillies broadcasting team.

McCarthy was a broadcaster for the Phillies from 2001 through the 2005 season, and also hosted the team’s pre- and post-game shows.

McCarthy, as quoted in a team press release…

“I’m excited to be back in Philadelphia.  I enjoyed my two years with WFAN and the Mets.  Both are first-class, as are the Phillies.  I’m looking forward to returning and can’t wait for spring training to get here.”

thanks to Eddie Kranepool Society for the tip

screw this guy hes a traitor forget him…hes a front runner…notice how he joins the Mets the year they win the division, and he leaves after the Phillies beat them

  2. metsrbest says:

Uhhhh….how did he know the Mets would win the division in 2006 when he joined? He came to a team that was a few games over .500. Some front runner.lol

    • thekid024 says:

Strange, wasn’t he supposedly a Mets fan who was more than happy to join wfan as a Mets broadcaster?

  3. Trumpzilla says:

I can’t blame him. I’d rather work for winners instead of chokers also if I was him

  4. ravin108 says:

If we give are giving Tom McCarthy to a division rival, I’d expect at least a grade A prospect in return

  5. mrose says:

eh at least its not Howie

I wonder who will replace him

  6. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

do we get a sandwhich pick for this?

  7. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

I think Met fans can live without a guy who’s homerun call is “He can’t get it”, while everyone listening to the RADIO has no idea the ball is over the fence. Tom McCarthy is awful and I was hoping they would fire him anyway.

  8. Never liked him. Good.

  9. eric says:

Man, you guys are tough. Although I have to admit I was never a big fan – mostly because he and Howie never seemed comfortable together.

I guess he had a tough act to follow: Howie Rose and Gary Cohen were not just good, but may have been the best radio team going. And then before that, well, it was the best in the business, ‘ol Murph.

Still: Tom had a frustrating habit of describing a play AFTER it happened, rather than during….Most announcers are like that, but I would rather have them “paint the word picture” for us, and Mets fans have had some of the great ones to do that….

  10. loopenark says:

I liked McCarthy, but now that I know he was rooting for the Phillies in those disasterous August/September games, I’m not so sure.

Just hope they find someone good and don’t use Eddie Coleman.

  11. Slob says:

I just hope this doesn’t open up a position for Fran Healy.

  12. My vote is for Kevin Burkhardt

    • NYMetz6986 says:

they really should put burkhardt in the radio booth and cotter back on the field but i think burkhardt is nice and settled working for sny but who knows

  13. Blue_n_Orange says:

    So long Gary Clone.

  14. Protes says:

Surprising news – but he was boring so I don’t mind. I’d like to see Eddie C as a permanent fixture in the booth. He is actually quite good.

  15. ghobot says:

yeah if eddie C tightened up his call, id loved for him to replace mccarthy.

  16. Andrew says:

    My vote is for me.

Put me in the booth, WFAN!

  17. Krusty The Klown says:

    How bout Bob Sacamento?

  19. sdanzig says:

He was always a Brav..err..Philly in my eyes.

  20. craigswandive says:

Unlike 99% of fans, I actually prefer radio to TV. As such, even though I live in Queens, I listen to almost every game.

McCarthy was a carpetbagger straight up. Whenever there’s a blow out or a slow game Howie (and Gary) would always dip into a life long bag of Mets lore. They grew up in the shadow of the park and have lived their lives as Mets fans. The last two years, you’d get McCarthy faking it while Howie would recall personal baseball memories. He always struck me as faking it and now he’s back to his roots. Good riddance cheesesteak!

I actually like Eddie C in the booth but I think we need a guy who has lived his life as a fan. Radio is different than TV, you experience the game through the sound of their voice. The guys have to be more interesting and pay more attention to the game.

IT’s one way we will always be better than the Yankees. Howie calls a great game and Sterling. Well, enough said.

How about the Schmoooz? Would he do it?

    • christian warrior says:

I think you are incorrect with your assessment that 99% of sports fans prefer television broadcasts. You’d be surprised.

  21. loopenark says:

If the Mets were smart, they’d run a contest to have fans submit their demos of calling a game and pick someone new. Kind of like a You Tube, but audio only. How cool would that be?

  22. Felix the Cat says:

I actually liked McCarthy, although not as much as Howie or Gary before him. This took me by surprise since I thought I had heard that McCarthy had grown up a Mets fan like Howie and Gary did. Oh well. Schmoozer is an interesting idea. Not sure he would work in a broadcast booth but it might be worth a tryout if he was interested. I’m torn on Eddie C. I think he’s okay but he is a Red Sox fan at heart.

  23. bhill410 says:

Outside canditate is Bob Heussler. He does the that women basketball team and apperntly is always trying to land an announcing gig. Dont know if that translates well to baseball.

  24. Krusty The Klown says:

all I hope is they don’t get that guy from daily news live, scott farrel or something. his voice killed chucks norris’s baby.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

He’d be the Johnny Most of the Mets!

    • JEFF S says:

      I have the perfect solution…

They should take a page out of the Los Angeles National League baseball team’s set up…

When Vin Scully is working a game on the tube (either cable or over the air), the first three innings are simulcast on radio and television. After the third inning, the radio play by play is picked up by Charley Steiner working with Rick Monday. When Scully is not working a game, Steiner does the play by play on television while Rick Monday works the game on radio.

      So here’s my proposal.

When the game is on SNY, allow Cohen working with Ron and Keith to simulcast the first 3 innings…after that allow Rose to pick up the play by play on radio working with either Keith or Ron while the other remains with Gary for the remainder of the game…(or they can use one of the buys they have in the studio such as Mazilli to work color with Rose leaving the 3 guys in the television booth)….on national telecasts when sny is not doing the game, let Cohen and Rose do the game on radio.

As far as McCarthy, personally I think he is still upset that Cohen was brought in to do one inning during the 2006 playoffs. Personally, although the radio tv columnists didn’t like the move, I thought it was a great move. After all, it is clear that every team has a lead broadcaster and today the Mets’ lead broadcaster is indeed Gary Cohen..(I still don’t know if that move was by WFAN or by the Mets)…

Eddie C. is simply not an accomplished play by play man and belongs doing what he is dong.

Hopefully they won’t consider Suzyn Waldman.

  25. upstatemet says:

Never warmed up to him and he actually seem to get worse as the year went on. No real loss. Mr. Met sounds like a good replacement and Steve Somers would be a refreshing change. Healy will never be asked back.

  26. kowalski69 says:

Steve Somers might be good in the booth doing color commentary. His voice may grow irritating, though, over 162 games

  27. The Glider says:

It’s all too clear to me now. The Phillies sent McCarthy to us as a “plant” to infiltrate our team and steal our signs, inside info, etc. I demand an official MLB investigation.

You might be a good spy, McCarthy, but you sucked as an announcer.

    Good riddance!

  28. mr.gee21 says:

Hey, nobody could be as bad as the Yanks radio team. Once in awhile I try to listen to an inning…so painful.

  29. CornellMetsFan says:

i loved howie and tom- please come back gary.

  30. mets1689 says:

Why not let Howie to the entire game on radio and have let Ron and Keith rotate between doing TV and Radio. And for the big games when SNY uses a three man booth let Eddie C do the games with Howie on FAN.
