In an article for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes that the Mets made a strong run at LHP Erik Bedard at the general managers’ meetings, but at the time, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail was not ready to make a move.
The Dodgers have also shown interest in the 28-year old southpaw.
Rosenthal suggests that should the Orioles fail to sign Bedard to an extension, they could be interested in a package around Mets OF Carlos Gomez or Dodgers OF Matt Kemp.
Meanwhile, in an article for the Baltimore Sun, Jeff Zrebiec writes that MacPhail and Bedard’s agent have been having ‘periodic’ conversations about a contract extension.
More in-depth talks about an extension have not been ruled out for next week’s winter meetings.
Lastly, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com cites a ‘National League executive’ as saying, “All the Orioles are available.”

whatever package omar wants to trade for santana but is unable to, he should use that package and break it up into 2 trades.
One acquiring bedard and the other like a blanton type.
If omars best package for santana is gomez, mulvey, heilman, fmart, humber and gotay, then he should trade trade gomez, heilman and mulvey for bedard and trade fmart gotay and humber for another starter.
+/- other lower prospects
Yes, It’s obvious the Orioles need OF help. Just read something about Melvin Mora playing the OF in winter ball.
I covet Bedard. I think he’ll cost fewer prospects than Santana or Haren, but I think he’s better than Haren. This is really the way to go.
Also, I think Omar is using his public run at Santana as leverage. He’s trying to get another GM to bite and let go of an ace, aka Bedard.
The more & more I think about it, Bedard should be omar’s #1 choice if he is indeed available. He’s a lefty and we need a lefty with the departure of Tommy. The possibility now exists that Omar could also get Hernandez and include the newly aquired Estrada in what every package of players he offers.
OK, Omar bashers, he’s not sleeping… Let’s see what we know to be his shopping list—
1) Santana
1a) Haren
1a) Bedard
2) Blanton
2a) Willis?
I am a firm believer that we will have one of these 5 pitchers on the Mets next year. It is also possible we might be blown away by someone else, perhaps a pitcher previously thought to have been unavailable.
As to the point above, I think that initial package for Santana is too much. Also, If we make a big trade for Santana or someone else, Omar must keep the remaining “A” prospects, either to fill the remaining holes or as a hedge against injury.
My trade proposals for some of the above, by the way:
1) Santana: Gomez, FMart, Humber and Guerra
1a) Haren: Milledge, Heilman and Jon Niese
1a) Bedard (and Hernandez): Gomez, Pelfrey, Humber and FMart
2) Blanton: Milledge, Gotay and A prospect (Kunz?)
2a) Willis: Milledge and A prospect
Nice Breakdown and good possibilities. But If Omar is able to swing a deal for Bedard & Hernandez, I would think that Estrada would almost certainly be part of that deal. That could save us a prospect.
The thing I like about Bedard (besides his obvious talent) is the fact that it will allow us to utilize the one thing we have in abundance — money. If we agree to take back the bloated contracts of someone like Hernandez and/or Huff, we should be able to minimize our prospect loss. There’s really no one on the A’s or Twins that we could agree to take back as sort of a salary dump that might prove to be useful to us.
I’d be happy with Santana, Haren or Bedard, but if we’re going to take someone else’s salary dump, at least make if for a player that would be useful. Hernandez or Huff would fit that bill.
99z) Brian Stokes
1) I’d do that, and it may be enough depending on what the Yanks & the BoSox offer. (Jim Callis of BA has a good chat going on ESPN where he’s addressed trade matchups. He thinks Melky & Kennedy are overrated, and the Yanks aren’t willing to giveup Joba or Hughes. He thinks the Mets prospects may not be enough for Haren, much less Santana, and that Blanton is more likely. He sees the BoSox as most likely to have a Santana package.)
2)Yes
3) Probably, but Angelos always stops big Os’ trades (see the 3-way Oswalt deal), so I wouldn’t let this long-shot delay another deal.
4) Yes
5) NFW. Willis is on a fast path to bottom-of-the-rotation journeyman. This is not the D-Train of 3 or 4 years ago.
The thing with Bedard is that there was alot of speculation that he wants to sign in Toronto when he hits Free Agency because he’s from Canada. So a contract extension for Bedard is a must in my eyes. No extension window, no deal.
Absolutely correct.
Wow, so when are you guys going to upgrade your server? It’s been mega slow that last few days.
Never mind all these wacky trades. Our prayers have been answered. Minaya just traded for Brian Stokes from the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays for cash. I should never have doubted him. What a masterful move. 1.84 WHIP, 7.07 ERA, and 11 HR’s in 62 innings. Clearly the future of the Mets bullpen.
What do you think he cost, a nickel?
Bedard + Huff would fill 2 needs. Basically would just leave the BP to round out (from the left over pile of course), unless they trade Milledge and need a starting RF. GOmez ain’t gonna cut it.
Just please do something and get it over with.
The 3 guys I really want to stay are Milledge, Pelfrey and Martinez. Although Mulvey looks intriguing too, but not as much.
Milledge straight up for Blanton is a rip off. By the A’s unfortunately, not the Mets.
Now, Blanton + a real C prospect for Milledge and Estrada would be a different story.
If Omar is going to trade a bunch of guys for a P, at least get some prospects back that will fill another need, or a salary dump like Huff.
