Buzz: Twins Close to Trading Garza to Rays
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 28, 2007 4:05 pm

At his blog for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, citing ‘several sources,’ La Velle E. Neal III reports that the Twins are close to trading RHP Matt Garza, RHP Juan Rincon and SS Jason Bartlett to the Rays for OF Delmon Young, SS Brendan Harris and OF Jason Pridie.

…i know what other outlets have said, but, honestly, i get no sense that the Mets could ever have traded just Carlos Gomez and Kevin Mulvey to get garza…the way i understand, that’s a garbled rumor, combining parts and peices from a variety of talks over the last few months involving all sorts of players from garza, to Luis Castillo, to Lastings Milledge to Johan Santana, and so on…just talk, though…i don’t think any real deal was ever available, at least to the extent that the Twins were looking for, or got from the Devil Rays…

Wow! Is this an indication that the Twinkies are not trading Santana or teams are not meeting their demands for Santana? It was widely believed that they would trade one or the other but not both.

On the other hand, who knows? The Twins may be ‘rebuilding’, or they may keep him until the trading deadline next season.

true…but rebuilding by trading a 22 year old stud pitcher?

      • x-nady says:

Thats why I am so surprised. I thought for sure that Johan would go. I guess they were really desperate for offense in the absence of Castillo & Hunter. I am not sure that Johan is going to be moved this Winter now, which seems weird considering they prob. can get more for him now than at the deadline when they will be squeezed to make a deal.

Maybe the Twins will surprise the hell out of everyone and resign him?

I don’t think this bodes well for the Mets. If the twins are still looking to trade Johan they will def want a top-notch pitching prospect in return; something the mets do not have outside of Maine or Ollie.

Delmon isnt really a CF type, so a strong CF propsect i think will be needed. I just think now its gonna be a no trade or Johan for a Philip Hughes/ Bucholz type and a Gomez/Melky/Kemp/Jacoby type. We have Gomez, but we don’t have minor league pitching like that. And a combo of Pelfrey and Mulvey/Humber I don’t think will do it. Not now that the Twins don’t have Garza anymore.

Great trade for the Twins. Young is a solid OF, and Pridie had a great 2nd half in AAA and could be the answer in CF.

I’m not sure why TB gave away that much for an innings eater and a so-so setup man, though…and the swap of SSs will cost them $$. Baldelli is a question mark in the OF, but Crawford (if he’s not erupting) and Upton are solid. It’s probably b/c TB’s rotation (after Kazmir, of course) is absolutely pathetic…and they had to weaken their strength in the OF to have a 2nd credible SP.

Now that MN has traded Garza for at least 1 ML-ready bat, would they be more likely to accept younger talent (i.e., FMart) instead of Gomez?

  4. coreyschucky says:

If there is any truth to the this deal between the Twins and Devil Rays the Mets will have no shot at getting Santana. The Twins will fill there need in the OF and the Mets don’t have the pitching prospects that the Dodgers, Yankees, Angels or Red Sox have.

  5. Alban says:

I wish we had an impact bat like Delmon Young.

Oh wait! We do! His name is Lastings Milledge, and two years ago, he was neck and neck with Young in consideration for best minor league prospect.

  6. tfc3rid says:

Now the Twins will want 2 pitchers…

I dont trust anyone named La Velle E. Neal III.

  8. i saw it on espn so its probably true
    :(

i could care less about twins-rays but i dont know how this bodes for us getting johan.

    :(

Looks like Santana is going to the Red Sox or Yanks, if either one is willing to trade their prospects - otherwise he won’t be traded. The Twins just got two solid outfielders which means that Gomez and Martinez are meaningless. Unless the Mets can somehow spin these guys for pitching prospects who they can then trade for Santana, expect him to be in the AL East next year. My guess is that one of those two teams will blink first out of fear of the other getting Santana, and will trade top pitching prospects for Santana. If not, the Twins seem wiling to sit on him.

  10. Gilch says:

    he’s far from a STUD

  11. davidatlbr14 says:

This deal when consumated puts santana officially out of reach for the mets. never had but a minute chance to start with.

    better focus on the Athletics.

  12. smc says:

Let’s say we don’t get any of the “A” pitchers…

Might it be possible that we could spin a few prospects Tampa’s way and get Garza? I like this guy…

  13. BSMITTYFDNY says:

This is so disapointing. I really wanted us to get Garza. Regardless of what Matt has said I truly believe Omar could have had him for Gomez + and he turned it down because of his love affair with Gomez. I dont think Matt really wanted Garza either otherwise he would have posted that he did as he doesnt seem to hide his wishes for team player moves at all. We will regret that we didnt get this STUD of a pitcher. And yes he is a stud.

    • coldentoshea76 says:

The package the Twins are getting, though, is leaps and bounds better than “Gomez +”. Why would they have taken our deal over the one offered by the Rays?

      • stickguy says:

remember, offers exist at a period of time. Maybe last week theoffer to the Mets was made, before they discovered they could get a better package? Sometimes you make what you think is a good offer and live with it.

Mulvey + Gomez for Garza, regardless of what GOmez became 3 years from now, would probably have been a great deal for the near term for the Mets, and would have filled the need for another legit starter.

        • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Exactly StickGuy. You and I have been pushing for Garza for 2 weeks now. Now we have to accept he is gone and Omar made a big mistake. I only hope he finds a way to redeem himself.
