News: Mets Acquire Stokes
By Regis Courtemanche - Nov 28, 2007 3:49 pm

The Mets have acquired RHP Brian Stokes from the Devil Rays in exchange for cash.

The 28-year-old RHP was 2-7 with a 7.07 ERA in 59 games for Tampa Bay last season, allowing 49 runs and 90 hits in 62 1-3 innings.

…not quite the big splash i was waiting for…

Please, Omar, please tell me this is just a bad April Fool’s Joke on the eve of the Winter Meetings.

ERA of 7???? 90 hits in 62 innings??

Jeez, this stiff makes Guillermo Mota look like Cy Young.

  4. tfc3rid says:

This guy’s number are really awful….

Why are we going to give him a spot on the 40-man?

  5. x-nady says:

Clearly another “Fix-up Job” for Peterson. As long as it didn’t cost us players and and/or a long term contract, I am all for getting new arms in the pen.

  6. BBmetsfreak36 says:

doesnt seem to do much for us

  7. CaseStreet says:

Stokes is going to replace Heilman once we trade him to the A’s for Haren, et al.

    • VCarver says:

You need to use ; ) or  or  or  in your post or else someone will think you’re serious!

      • CaseStreet says:

Omar knows a diamond in the ruff when he sees it and Mr. Jacket could polish any pitcher. Sorry. How about a :)

        WOOHOO! 5pm.

  8. Alban says:

Great! Now we can flip him for Santana.

Equally serious, we now have a replacement for Pelfrey if we have to trade him for an ace.

  9. Ken Dynamo says:

i dont know about you guys but im pretty stoked about this deal.

  10. kowalski69 says:

Stokes produced a 2-7 record and a 7.07 ERA in 59 games for the Rays in 2007, his first full season in the big leagues. He pitched 62 1/3 innings in 59 appearances, fourth most among American League rookie pitchers, and he allowed 90 hits, including 11 home runs, and 25 walks. Stokes also hit three batters and struck out 35.

Young(ish) and wild. Def a job for the jacket or a small chip for a trade. Remember, though, that he played for tampa bay and in the AL east. perhaps a pitcher friendly park and some experience would do well for him? Not to mention a packed house at shea rather than fickle florida fans

    • VCarver says:

Exactly. We all know how much easier it is to pitch in NY in front of the uber friendly and patient NY fans. Piece of cake.

    • zer09 says:

Did you actually bother to look up stats that have already been posted…for a guy who no one really cares about….or will bring any significance to this team….and waste our time….

    • Tidewater says:

      You’re joking, right?

    young-garza deal close

so much for Twins need for a ML ready OF

  13. ReyesRocks says:

The possibilities of this are endless. Could be for another trade, could be adding to the quantity of arms, could be a fix up job, could be any number of things, however, this only cost us money, not prospects, so it’s not like its a bad thing.

We’re all so anxious for something to happen, that when something like this does happen we’re all disappointed, but it could very possibly be movement within the organization that’s gearing toward something else.

    This Just In…

Stokes had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery to his right elbow on Aug. 27, 2003, and while his arm returned to full strength, the curve has been slow coming back.

His career path with the rays was to compete for the 5th starter for 08 in spring training.

It looks like they saw something in the kid.

Rays Manager, Joe Maddon likes Stokes’ makeup and said one of the keys to his being in the starting rotation is regaining his curveball to complement the right-hander’s fastball and changeup.

    • jdon says:

that is why they let him go for cash. omar’s Bad Brian of 2008.

    • VCarver says:

Delcos at his blog says Stokes has been added to the 40-man roster. Now if that’s true, it doesn’t make any sense. Why waste a roster spot on a worthless player. If they lose another player like Jesus Flores in this year’s Rule 5 draft because of failure to protect him then Omar should be fired.

  15. sylvan says:

He was awful as a reliever last year, but he actually did well as a starter briefly in 06, and in the minors. This is a good low-risk pickup.

Picking up a pitcher from the Devil Rays can be a better idea than it sounds. Hear me out:
    - They have the worst defense in the majors, which makes all their pitchers look worse than they are.
    - Their bullpen sucks all-around, which makes everyone in it look even worse than they look already, because when a guy has a bad outing, there’s no one to bail him out.

Not a great endorsement, I know, but these are the kinds of things that can make a difference when you’re getting the marginal players every team needs, your Darren Olivers and Damion Easleys, who can sometimes contribute if given the chance.

    This should shut Wagner up

  17. gomets2008 says:

Hey ….im all for bringing in as many arms as possible….who knows what we will get with him ..but it wont cost us much …and i doubt he will be on “the list” lol

  18. RobInWisconsin says:

10 minutes is all it should take ti fix him. Really.

There’s something else here, gang, something that isn’t going to be readily apparent until sometime in March. Don’t ask me what it is. But, I think that Omar and The Jacket decided that Stokes was a guy they could fix in, say, 15 minutes. :p ;)

  23. tonylett says:

    Omar,—–Your kidding, Right ?!

  24. Charlie says:

yes! omar, you’re a genius. just when the mets fan base frustration with you is about to boil over, you pull one of the most impactful trades in mets history. brian whoever is going to lead this team into the future!

at least brian whoever will know how to get to shea, just think about your era and take that number train to the ballpark.

  25. Achilles400 says:

I guess you need someone to fill out all those Spring Training games and the AAA roster. Anyone that saw this guy pitch against the Yankees or Red Sox last year will not be of the mind that he has some hidden ability that can be brought out. he is just plain awful. Gives up some of the longest home runs you can imagine.

It’s tough to sit around and wait for Omar to do something special. It is also hard to believe he will. He’ll either have to unload all the top prospects to get one guy or he’ll get nothing done of consequence, then say the same things he said last year, that other teams wanted too much in return. My biggest disappointment is that this off season is a screaming indictment of the failure of the player development and scouting departments.

And please stop comparing anyone in the mets system to Young. The Mets would have to trade Reyes to get Garza. Young has more talent than anyone not named Wright on the Mets.

    • itsmetsforme says:

this (santa-na) thing –locking down a true ace pitcher–might be the big moment, the big negotiation a gm prepares years for, and you’re right, there are no horses to trade with. Even the Spankers have built their farm up enough in recent years to outplay the Mets it seems, so in a sense this is an indictment of the management team.

Some head scratching non-protection of prospects, some unwillingness to sign draft picks over money, and some bad looking trades involving relief pitching (see for example Bannister, Padres bullpen). I wonder if there will be more to add to the pile this winter?

  26. mrosey says:

and 75% of us some how approved of Omar’s job in the poll the other day. I’m proud to say I disapproved.

  27. zen says:

another case of omar bringing in mediocre white talent to please the fanbase: stokes, schoeneweis, green, conine, newhan, sele :)

  29. Steve In Tampa says:

Being in Tampa, I’m a Rays season ticket holder, and let me tell you first hand, this guy SUCKS,,,He’s good for giving up 2-3 baserunners per inning…Look at his whip it is off the charts…About the only positive I can offer is he throws hard 95mph+…Also he is not fan friendly in the least, you would think if you that bad, you would be a little nicer to the fans….

  30. jbinva says:

I realized as soon as I heard this that it was a brilliant move by Omar. This guy has tremendous anagram potential.
