I think we can officially turn our sights away from Johan Santana. The Twinks will most certainly want young guns now.

  2. Mcgrupp says:

Mets should setup a three way trade with a team (see Dodgers) with a solid 3B prospect and the Twins. Implausible, but possible. I wonder how many teams would compete for Haren’s services if he was offered.

    • gottabelieve07 says:

Why would any team pay what’s needed for Santana to have him land anywhere but in their own house?

    • Meddler says:

I had the same thought. Its unlikely, interesting, but unlikely.

I’d say the Dodgers would have to get Tejada first to play third (if its Cabrera it probably costs the Dodgers LaRoache anyway and the point is moot). Maybe Milledge and Pelfrey for LaRoache and Ethier? Milledge and Ethier probably post comparable 2008s, but Milledge could bump Pierre to LF and will probably outproduce Ethier in the lonrun. The Mets don’t overpay for a Milledge replacement and keep decent production from RF. Then the Dodgers get a pitcher for 2008 and give up a prospect who would be blocked anyway. The Mets get a piece that would be more enticing to the Twins for Santana.

After that, the Mets would have to put LaRoache either with a pitcher and an outfielder or two pitchers. Some combo like Mulvey or Humber and Gomez or Guerra.

      That’s the long version.

      The short version: Not happening.

  3. gipper913 says:

Yikes,,,there goes Johan. They won’t need Gomez/ L Millz now.

Omar – that eerie sound in the distance is the impending end of your Mets career.

  4. Krusty The Klown says:

omar is making willie look like jessica simpson in a black thong on a hot summer day licking a wollypop which is scary

  5. matt says:

does this mean the rays are trying to contend???

    Global New York Mets

  6. Mets24 says:

Bye-Bye Omar………you’re time is up. Maybe you can get a job with one of those Dominican winter league teams you always dreamed of or something….

    • Slob says:

Maybe he’s actually trying to build a team that will at least compete for years to come, instead of blowing his whole load on one guy. Just a thought. I’m kind of tired of watching the Mets fall to pieces a year after each postseason appearance. I hope every damned one of those prospects and young players everyone wants shipped out of town is on the Mets next year. And if they’re not, I want them all to be MVP candidates, just to shut you people up.

  7. professor met says:

All this means is that we need to focus on Dan (danny boy) Haren:

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer’s gone, and all the flowers are dying
‘Tis you, ’tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer’s in the (Flushing)meadow
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow
‘Tis I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

  8. mattbez says:

You guys have got to be kidding me. Omar Minaya has single-handedly revitalized the Mets organization. Oh but I guess your memory doesn’t go back 3 whole years, sorry.

    • Krusty The Klown says:

our memories go back 3 years but we also think about the future, and right now signing pedro and beltran don’t mean crap

      • Web says:

I don’t know what games you watch but Beltran is one of if not the best centerfielders in the game. And he is only 30 years old.

      • gbaked says:

no… but the trading for OP and Maine sure do. As well as the great contracts he signed wright and reyes to. As well as the fact that he has a nice farm that is slowly (it takes years to build a farm) getting better. Some of his drafts have not worked out… but he makes up for it with his Dominican scouting.

Only one team wins every year guys…. some perspective

      • gbaked says:

and the signing of beltran does mean something,… we have the best CF in the game right now.

  9. stickguy says:

Well, now that it looks like Johan might not be an option, it is official. No way the Mets can possibly win more than 65 games next year. Last place, guaranteed.

Now, where is that sarcasm icon???

Get over the bad finish already (the “collapse”) this is still a good team, with a lot of talent, that is certainly a contender. A SP or 2 is likely to be added, but even if it is just a solid rotation guy (basically to replace Glavine, with hopefully a bit better results), they will be fine.

A couple of more strong arms in the pen is probably more important than a futile chase of the mythical Unicorn (err, I meant Ace).

THe Mets finally have a couple of prospects that have gotten enough experience that they can be expected to step up and contribute, and most posters can’t wait to trade them for anyone elses stiff SP, just to “eat some innings”

Of course, the same posters will roast Omar if Milledge becomes a star in the next year while Blanton (if it is him) scuffles along putting up Glavine-esque numbers.

I still also don’t buy the idea that if you get someone like santana, it doesn’t matter if you have to run out a couple of stiffs elsewhere (RF, 4/5 starter). Every position counts.

    • Meddler says:

I agree for the most part, except I think the Mets can take the hit in RF. They had a strong offense last year with Shawn Green there. Obviously your not going to put Anderson Hernandez in RF, but with anything near or better than average, this will be a strong offense. Milledge would just make it stronger.

On the other hand, a stud pitcher would make a below average rotation a very strong one, maybe even a little above average if it means giving up Maine. I’m not necessarily endorsing that position, but I wouldn’t rule it out either.

      • gbaked says:

i think our rotation is average right now and it wont take a santana to make it above…

any #2 or better would be fine… i would almost rather bedard then santana.

  10. 7-train says:

I don’t know if this is proper math or not, but if we didn’t have the pieces to get Garza from the Twins we might as well forget about Santana. Unless Omar will only send Gomez or Milledge for Santana.

Billy Beane is clever enough to figure that out and now Haren’s price has likely escalated.

Brilliant move by the Twins. Young is a hell of a player and this is going to jack up the pitching market all around.

    • stickguy says:

see below for an opinion on Young. He is still largely potential. As is Milledge.

I think they should flirt with beane, and try to make a quick strike on Baltimore to work out a deal featuring Bedard and Gomez. Plus whatever etc. needed from both sides. Huff would be fine, they need a LH OF/1B guy anyway.

  11. stickguy says:

For everyone getting so excited about Delmon (a true head case), Milledge was actually much more productive than him last year. He put up better numbers across the board. You just have to prorate them, since LM had only about 30% of the ABs (640 vs. 186 or so.

    L Milledge
    NYM OF 59 184 27 50 9 1 7 29 82 13 42 3 2 .341 .446 .272

    Young
    162 645 65 186 38 0 13 93 10 .288 .316 .408

LM had significantly higher OBP and slugging. OPS was .787 (Not bad for a 22 YO rookie), vs. .724.

    More HRs per AB too.

Just keep that in mind (and they were compared a couple years back, and it was basically a toss up I think) as the best OF prospects in the minors.

Just keep this in mind when you are tossing him into a trade, along with 2 other guys, for a very average pitcher like Blanton, who frnakly stunk 2 years OK.

Milledge is still a top prospect, with the potential to bust out big time.

Blanton will pitch 200 innings and be nothing special (anyone remember Walt Terrell?)

Blanton is no better than what heillman would be right now if they had just stuck him in the rotation 3 years ago and left him there. Maybe not even as good.

    • 7-train says:

For the record I would hate to see Milledge go. I really like the kid.

You’d have to get Santana, Haren, Bedard or Miguel Cabrera back to justify it in my opinion.

    • stickguy says:

also keep this in mind when deciding which propects to ship out. Gomez and Milledge are not interchangeable. Yeah, Gomez is fast, but he is still largely raw tools. Lots of fast guys don’t pan out. LM though has already put up legit numbers in the majors, and could be primed for a break out year in 2008.

Give him the everyday job, with a rest against the occasional super tough RH starter, and he can easily do 540 ab, 20-25 HRs, 90+ RBIs, .280 average, 800+ OPS, and 20+ steals.

That assumes he hits no lower than 7th, but probably should be 6th w/Delgado 7th.

Actually, he should hit 2nd, but Castillo is clogging that up.

Now, will he do these numbers (and even more the next year) at Shea, or elsewhere?

This is why I would much rather trade Gomez if I had the choice.

  12. AzMetsFan says:

So much for Kirby Resting in Peace with that move

  13. beef says:

one of the big problem with the mets this year was that insted of having guys like mulvey and humber getting there feet wet this year we had guys like dave willams and brian lawrence getting starts. The mets the last two years are allways trying to find some good trash insted of building up there farmsystem’s trade value.

  14. a817 says:

is it me… Or has beene over valued Blanton by alot? Why in the world would Blanton be considered better than Loshe or Silva? Blanton has pitched like a back of the rotation guy while pitching in a pitchers park and has 2 lousy offensive teams in that division an era very close to 5 two year ago. Hell Zito had better numbers in Oakland than Blanton and he moved to the NL and you saw what happened there. Blanton is a probably a 4th starter, and i am Beene I would be dying to rip of the mets like what happened in the mark mulder trade. I am sure Omar will overpay for Blanton because he thinks he is an ace blah blah blah… FOR THE LOVE OF GOD OMAR, DON’T GET BLANTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless it is for an average prospect, and you want him to be a back of the rotation guy. You can get a Joe Blanton on the market

  15. Meddler says:

Perhaps Omar should look at it this way: If this is the value of Garza, maybe he should target younger players who have legit breakout potential.

How about the Brewers? They need a closer, plus we’ve already fleeced them once. We could start talking with Aaron Heilman for one of their quality young arms. They have a ton of guys who should be quite good in 2008. Ben Sheets, Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush are the locks for their rotation, but there’s then Yovani Gallardo, Manny Parra, Carlos Villanueva, Chris Capuano, and Claudio Vargas. I could see adding Mike Pelfrey into the conversation and having a shot somewhere in there (I’d have levels of interest in all except Vargas) plus a solid low level prospect like Jeremy Jeffress or Angel Salome. The Brew Crew gets their closer and still have a strong contingent of young starters to fill out their rotation, and the Mets get a more advanced young pitcher and some filler for the lower parts of the system that could come in handy in a year or two.

  16. JR. says:

for the “ace” pitchers, personally, realizing the mets have no shot at yohan, ive wanted haren all along out of the pool.

with that said. PLEASE DON’T TRADE MILLEDGE
after passing up on a possible milledge for oswalt deal a couple years back, and then backing out of a milledge for zito deal, his stock has plumetted faster then his rapping ability. Give the man a year to start at right field and show everybody why he was once considered the best outfielding prospect in baseball.

ps. does anybody remember gomez feasting on slow lazy fastballs like moyers (2hrs in one game at shea)….i dont think hes ready, yet for some reason teams are in love with him. trade him while his value is high, not milledges while it is low.
