Note: Beltran Has Full No-Trade
By D.J. Short - Nov 28, 2007 1:45 pm

…for anyone listening to WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog program right now, please remember that OF Carlos Beltran has a full no-trade clause…beltran wouldn’t sign without one, and it was something the Astros could not guarantee him…and with that, the talk about trading Beltran to the Twins, which is absolute insanity, can come to an end…

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

…plus, if the Twins could not afford to give Torii Hunter a five-year, $80 million contract, how are they going to suddenly afford beltran, who has $74 million due to him over four years…and while the Mets have money, i’m not sure they are rich enough to pay beltran’s way, plus pay santana…

…speaking of Mike and the Maddog’s tired rhetoric, this idea that the Mets must part with Jose Reyes to get santana, as if that is Omar Minaya’s only chance to get the Twins on the phone, just makes no sense, either…again, it’s not about who can pay more than the Mets, it’s about who is willing to pay more than the Mets in talent, and then pay santana a six-year, $150 million deal on top of that…as i have said before, sure, i’m certain the Twins would prefer to accept Felix Pie from the Cubs, or Joba Chamberlain from the Yankees, or Carlos Quentin from the D’Backs, or several other players who are certainly more attractive than the Mets can offer, but if the Cubs and Yankees are unwilling to trade those guys, or the D’Backs can’t afford santana’s contract, then who cares if their players are viewed as more valuable to a few talk show hosts…it doesn’t matter what talk radio thinks…it only matters what the Twins think

It is unreal how these guys overvalue Melky but we HAVE to give up Reyes to have ANY shot at Santana…

Riiiiiight….

From what I’ve seen of Cabrera, he doesn’t have half the ability of Milledge!!!!

I agree with this statement. Melky looks like he’ll be a Coco Crisp type outfielder. Good range, above average arm, can hit for average. Milledege still has more potential than that.

It annoys me how Yankee fans value Melky as high as Jacoby Elsbery, who is miles ahead of him. Look back two years and Yankee fans were embarassed to have Melky in their outfield.

I’m just amazed how these two guys even have jobs. They have zero credibility as far as I’m concerned.

But they get people riled up, and that’s what makes a call-in show great.

Another point Matt…

Francessa says the Twins don’t want Cano or Wang because ‘They won’t want to pay them.’ But yet, they WOULD pay Reyes???

Get out of here… The love the Yanks… They want the Yanks to get Santana… Hank Steinbrenner must love listening tothem because he does what they ask for !!!!

not only that.. but CANO has like 6 months more service than Melky.. they are at - basically - the same salary level..

dont want Cano because they cant afford him is a completely moronic statement.

I love how Mike and Chris can actually think the Twins would want to acquire of salary like Beltrans when they can’t afford Santana’s. They have glaring needs, and taking on Beltrans salary hurts their ability to address elsewhere.

I wouldn’t mind listening to Mets game on a network that didn’t employ these two morons. Whether that means they leave or the Mets leave, I’d be on board…

for the package and cash required to get santana it would be much wiser to trade for haren then repair the bullpen by trading for joe nathan who is available according to foxsports:

http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/28615

pedro
haren
maine
perez
duque

wagner
nathan
heilman
sanchez
feliciano
sosa/show

that’s a solid pitching staff. they’d need to add a right-field bat though as milledge and gomez will be gone in trades.

The Mets need to make a trade similar to the ones the Celtics and T-Wolves made for Garnett. 4-1 or 5-1.

Additionally, fans of all teams for some crazy reason have an irrational notion that their teams young propsects or players will all be great. Reality check - most are busts or avg at best.

Look at a Celtics fan forum or blog before and right after the Allen and Garnett trades. 2/3’s of the entries were bemoaning the fact they lost 4-5 young players who were the future of the franchise. Look at what their saying now after an 11-1 start.

Pelfrey - at best a #3 or perhaps like Izzy
Humber - who knows already had elbow surgery
Milledge - Gilkey?
Gomez - no bat yet
Fmart - ??
Gotay - avg at best
J. Smith - might become Bradford clone
Mulvey - who knows

Even if one of the group pans out to be an allstar — don’t you think its worth it for a perennial Cy Young winner an ace. I would easily give up 3-4 or maybe even 5 of those players for Johan. Depth - you can get their production at this stage from a a journey man FA. Worry about 4 years from now in 4 years.

My deal —- (Option A) Maine or Perez, Gomez and choice of 1 of (Pelfrey, Humber, FMart, Gotay) or (Option B) Milledge, Gomez, and choice of 2 of (Pelfrey, Humber, J. Smith, Mulvey, Kunz, Gotay)

Rotation for 08

(A)
Santana
Pedro
Maine or Perez
Duque
FA or (Humber, Pelfrey)

(B)
Santana
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Duque

I prefer option (B).

Jim Callis of BP has a Q & A going now with some thoughtful takes on frontline starters’ trades:

Jason (NJ): Am I the only one who thinks Hughes, Cabrera and Jackson is a weak offer for Santana. I think Melky is WAY over rated by some of these writers. If I am the Twins GM, I ask for Hughes and Cano, plus a lesser guy. Whats your opinion?

Jim Callis: (2:13 PM ET ) I don’t think Cabrera is anything special, but that’s not a horribly weak offer. I love Philip Hughes. I don’t think the Yankees will part with Cano, so if I’m the Twins, maybe I counter with Hughes, Cabrera, Tabata (or Jackson if I can’t get more than Tabata) plus Ian Kennedy.

Anthony (Brooklyn NY): Ian Kennedy; Is he legit or product of Yankee hype? Would the Twins accept him in a deal instead of Phil Hughes?

Jim Callis: (2:15 PM ET ) Some of each. Kennedy’s stuff is nothing special, but he pitches above his stuff. He can become a No. 3 pitcher, but he’s not budding Mike Mussina. I think the Twins would be happy to have him, but not as the centerpiece of a Santana deal. He’s not that good.

Norman, Putney, VT: Word here (which means rumors) has the Sox offering Buchholtz OR Lester, plus Coco, Lowrie and Masterson OR Bowden for Santana if the Twins grant the 72 hour negotiating window. Too much, too little, just right?

Jim Callis: (2:18 PM ET ) I That’s the type of deal that could work for both sides. Boston gets to keep Ellsbury, they can afford to give up a quality young starter with Santana coming in, Lowrie is blocked in Boston right now but ready to play, and the Red Sox could afford to give up Masterson or Bowden in that deal, too. If I’m the Twins, I’d obviously prefer Ellsbury, but that’s an interesting package. Maybe I get Brandon Moss, who’s blocked also, thrown in as well.

Mike(NY): Dan Haren and Calero for Gomez, Guerra, and Mulvey. Is that a good trade offer?

Jim Callis: (2:21 PM ET ) Good for the Mets. If I’m the A’s, I want more than that. I’m not sure how many great chips New York has to play with. I love Milledge’s talent, hate the makeup. I’m not as big a fan of Pelfrey, Humber and Gomez as others might be. I just don’t see enough enticing pieces to pull off a blockbuster.

——————————————————————————–
Dave (South Bend): Is Mulvey, Pelfrey, and Milledge enough for Haren? Please say no. What about Blanton?

Jim Callis: (2:23 PM ET ) I’d still rather have Haren. But you know what, I suspect we’re going to see a deal that involves sending Milledge to Oakland and Blanton to New York.

If there is any truth to the reported near close deal between the Twins and Devil Rays the Mets will have no shot at getting Santana. The Twins will fill there need in the OF and the Mets don’t have the pitching prospects that the Dodgers, Yankees, Angels or Red Sox have.

Reported Deal That’s Close from MLB Trade Rumors:

Twins Get: Delmon Young, Brendan Harris & Jason Pridie
DRays Get: Matt Garza, Juan Rincon & Jason Bartlett

Ian Kennedy is bascially Brian Bannister with the Yankee hype machine.

Joba and Kennedy didn’t exist in their system a year ago and now they are gods. Hughes projects to a #3 starter for most scouts, and Cabrera is a 5th OF.
